  • This student has great stats and experiences, but she made basic mistakes throughout her application. One major mistake includes a lack of shadowing on her application. Will she learn from her mistakes and not make the same mistake again as she prepares to apply again?

Carle Illinois COM: This Recruitment Director Is Revamping Secondary Apps
Carle Illinois College of Medicine has no interview and a unique secondary application process. Heather Wright is the Director of Recruitment, and she explained the whole process with me on Ep. 349 of The Premed Years.
    Check it out here: Premedyears.com/349
    In this video we discuss:
•How to list shadowing done during a clinical job or position.
•Why Research should not be in your personal statement.
•Why some advisors say you need more volunteer experiences despite a lot of hours.
•Why you should rewrite your application as much as possible as a reapplicant.
•How to show that you are still committed to medicine during a gap year.
•Are review articles or journal publications worth listing in the application?

She seems incredibly sweet, bright, and personable. I bet if she got an interview she would have received an acceptance. I hope she gets in during the next cycle!

I'm missing from the video what improvements she should make. I get your critiques, but what you would you rewrite one of her sentences to be? A paragraph even? I wish these videos would show more of your revising process. I often leave the videos thinking the application is boring, but not knowing what I would do to make it better. I'd appreciate more thoughtful suggestions for improvement in these application videos.

I would watch some of the "mission accomplished" videos for examples of what *to do* and make note of what *not to do* from these videos. Dr. Gray's "Premed Playbook" series is straightforward. I would check out the "personal statement" and "medical school application process" to get a better idea of the revising process. If you're concerned about the technical aspect of writing rather than the content, try reaching out to your college's writing center/tutoring services for revision advice. In regard to writing (excluding content), it doesn't seem to matter as long as it's grammatically correct and free of spelling errors.

@Luke Tomlinson Yeah this is exactly what I think too. You phrased it really well. I hope Dr. Gray sees this and is able to offer some sort of workshop or video series where he takes a bad activities description, highlights what he thinks is wrong with it, and then presents a revised activities description that fixes those mistakes

Lack of nonclinical volunteering is a bigger red flag than lack of shadowing. She has enough clinical experiences to back up her "why medicine" but not enough altruism that adcoms like to see...

Do you think this applies to people who have to take paid positions out of necessity?

@@hankgreenswife Yes. She has 433 hours as clinical volunteering. If even 100 of those were devoted to nonclinical, it would make this app perfect.

This seems a bit naive.. as someone who works to pay a mortgage, put food on the table, keep the lights on etc, all while going to school full time it’s not always feasible to give up your time for free at the expense of being able to have necessities.

    • @hankgreenswife
      @hankgreenswife 3 роки тому +2

@@Sav1010 I think that’s why Dr. Gray made it a point to say that’s not a distinguishing factor. I think it’s important to be well rounded, but adcoms know not all students have that financial freedom.

I see not much wrong in her application,I must say med school admissions are so random....it feels like half the time they play heads and tails to decide.....you find faults if the candidate is not accepted and same story, you don't find faults as they are accepted........

What is your opinion on working as a pharmacy technician for the entirety of my undergraduate time? I give vaccines and separate those hours from my normal pharm tech hours. Oklahoma medical school told me that they don't mind it, they just want me to explain why I chose to pursue medical school over pharmacy school.

He’s mentioned if your pharmacy experience is in retail, it’s not great and shouldn’t be considered clinical. He mentioned that inpatient/hospital pharm techs with patient exposure could potentially consider it clinical.
