Every time I hear an A/B of a SD-1 vs a Tubescreamer or do one myself I end up preferring the SD-1. Here too.

Boss SD1 and Ibanez Tube Screamer are classics and very similar. I love and use both pedals.

I like SD-1 as an overdrive into clean channel, and TS-9 as a boost into a high gain amp.

Boss SD-1w sounded better in all instances to my ears, great demo guys.

Well, now that I've heard that I've been listening to Boss OD demos all day, and I find the OD1 sounds better than the SD-1 and the OD3 on almost every video for almost every type of music you'd want an OD for.

    • @cmartinrel
      @cmartinrel 8 років тому

ArielsSmartyPants I use my od3 as an almost clean boost into other gain pedals and it always adds just the right amount of grit and sustain/compression. Been using one for 10+ years in that capacity. A lot less useful as the only source of gain, but I love it.

Always preferred the SD-1 be it the Japanese or Taiwan. The tubescreamer does the SRV Texas blues sound really well though. I mean it’s iconic.

I have them both on my board. I use the TS-9 for a push over the edge to a clean amp (or edge of breakup amp) like my Blues Deluxe or Supro Blues King, and stack the SD-1 for drive.

  • @Pedrohsc2

The sd1 wazacraft sounds like a great tubescreamer with the nifty possibility of not cutting out all the bass when the custom mode is activated. The clear winner in this comparison.

I'm actually shocked at how much I like the Boss SD-1 (non-Waza version). I saw it on the used bin at my local store for $30, and I figured "what the hell, I'll try it". Well, it definitely stacks up to some of the more expensive pedals (Fulltones, Catalinbreads, etc) that I've owned. It doesn't really do the "amp in a box" thing, but for what I use it for, it's the best I've tried.

    • @majorgiroux

SUGGESTION: I'd love to see a show about how to use your guitar's tone and volume with dirt pedals. I can never see what the guitarist is doing with the volume and tone on demos, and I feel I'm missing a lot of information. I know that volume up creates more gain, but I don't know why. I'd like to learn how the tone knob on a guitar interacts with the amp and pedals.
Thanks for your shows . . . I've learned so much and appreciate it!

Had a Tube Screamer and tried for days to get a tone I wanted with my Les Paul Standard in conjunction with my '68 Princeton Fender amp. Finally decided to bring it back in exchange for a Boss SD-1W Wazacraft. The moment I plugged in the Waza, it was pure bliss. Super creamy tone unlike the Tube screamer which was harsh sounding. Love this pedal and will be looking into the whole Waza line now.

I just purchased a BOSS WAZA SD-1W. I’ve owned a tube screamer before and I’ve loved it but recently I also purchased a BOSS WAZA TAE and deeply impressed by the craftsmanship and the tonality so I was hoping that the SD-1 would be similar and craftsmanship and tonality and I was correct. Hands-down! The new boss sd-1w rocks the house! 👍👍🙄

Thanks to you guys I'm in tone heaven this week. I put a battery in my TS9 for the first time in 30 years and had a Gretsch 5422 delivered to me yesterday. Mainly got it for learning jazz chord melody because the stretches on my Strat are killing me but also going to learn some Chet Atkins style too so thanks to Mick on at least 3 counts. The TS9, Gretsch and the Atkins/ Travis inspiration. Dan love your passion man! This is the best tone education show on the planet even though my 2 pedals TS9 and Boss CE2 Chorus haven't seen the light of day for 30 years. I'm deeply ashamed. Merry Chrimbo guys. The TS9 sounds the best obviously!!

SD-1: crisp and crunchy; TS9: warm and woolly. I preferred the SD-1, by a lot, with both guitars. The Start/SD-1/Lonestar combo really sounded fantastic.
I wanted to hear the pedals with the Tele and Lone Star together. Did that happen, and I just missed it?

    Ideas:
    1) JHS Pulp n Peel vs Wampler Ego
    2) EHX Memory Man 1100TT vs JHS Panther Cub OR Way Huge Supa Puss
    3) Greer Lightspeed vs JHS Morning Glory
    4) Kingsley Drive (Harlot, Minstrel) vs high end/similarly priced solid state drive
    5) Lovepedal Eternity Burst vs something you find similar
    6) KOT vs Strymon Riverside
It'd be really cool to see how a top notch solid state drive (KOT, Amp 11, etc) compares to one of those amazing Kingsley tube drives. I'd also love to see a Lovepedal Eternity Burst on the show sometime, in any capacity. It might even be a good A/B partner for a Kingsley pedal.
    You guys are THE BEST.

I bought an Immerse after Rob and Lee reviewed one on Anderton's - I really like it. There are so many great reverbs out there that one finally has to choose one and the Immerse was a great balance between quality, features and price. What intrigued me with this video was the impact of the Blues Driver in the tone - WOW! I am on the lookout for the Waza Craft version.

Funny I think the mid range on the TS sounds better on a Strat in this particular setting....but on the Tele the SD-1 just seems to enhance it in all the right ways and is a better match. It's amazing how much guitar choice, amp and style can make pedals sound so different.

Both sound fantastic. Wasn't expecting the SD1w to be that good. It doesn't have 'that TS' sound but thank goodness otherwise it would just be yet another clone. More importantly the SD1w sounds great in its own right. Always handy having a boss pedal somewhere on the board, you can always use it as a hammer in case you forget your tool box.
suggestions for A/B... hmmm... BD1 vs Soul Food?

For years, I always assumed the BluesDriver was Boss's answer to the TubeScreamer. Only lately did I realize how similar the SD-1 is. I have an SD-1, and I love it. I loved the SD-1w, but didn't see a big enough difference in sound to justify the extra $100.

Thanks Dan and Mick, my favorite part about fridays! As I have sugested before i think a really good idea for a show would be a "GreenPedal" tube screamer like alternative, kinda like youve done here. Such as my Seymore Duncan 805 that has adjustable EQ that actually allows you to scoop the mids out of a "Green Pedal".

  • @georgenolte1626

The WAZA has a more, fuller sound than the Tube Screamer. However, having both pedals I like the Tube Screamer along with the addition of delay. The Boss DD-7 is fine, but I prefer the Line 6 D4 (can fine tune delay better). Obviously, amps play a BIG roll with Overdrive/Distortion Pedals. When I use my Marshall 1959 I place a "Hot Plate" (8 ohm) between the amp head and speaker , volume on 6 and gain on 7.5 to 8. I run the Tube Screamer in the back input/output with my Keeley Compressor going into the top Channel I input and the bottom Channel l input running into the top Channel II input. This way I get the "this Tube Screamer will make your Groove Tube EL 34's SCREAM!!!!. Using my Mesa Boogie Mark V, I go straight to the Keeley, to the Tube Screamer and use Channel III on the mid selection (Mark IV selected) with gain in the 11 o'clock position. It's not that the WAZA is not a fine pedal, it's just there is a reason they call the Ibenez a TUBE SCREAM......😎

Close. Sd1 has more gain/range; TS9 has stronger mid hump, a little more attack punchiness. IMO, TS9 sounded better overall, but you certainly can't go wrong with an SD1, if you had to choose. cool quick vid. thx guys!

There was less of a pronounced difference with the Tele than with the Strat. The Boss sounded fine with the Start but when you hit the Tube Screamer I found myself nodding. That was it. However, I could go either way on the Tele. That's my guitar of choice and the Boss almost seemed a bit more full which can be great! Fun watch!

I would prefer TS9 for live gigs, as it is easier to put into the mix - it will cut through without the danger of being too piercing, but for recording I would prefer SD1 as it has more open sound and gives more flexibility for tweaking.

Both are midrange boosters that cut highs and lows.. But the tone circuit is different. At the end you can hear that both pedals with the tone knob at 2 o'clock the sd1 really cuts the lows and the low mids.. The ts9 retains low mids at that position. it just rolls of top end..
try turning the tone knob of the sd1 down to 10.30 oclock.. it brings back the lower mids..

I know I’m late to the party but I wanted to say cool comparison video! I absolutely love the regular SD-1 to push my already dirty amp. I tried the SD-1w and didn’t like it near as much as the regular one. Especially on the “Custom” setting, it pushed too much bass and makes my already driven tone really loose and undefined. Almost like a fuzz pedal. My tone loses it’s punch.

Playing through a small 15watt solidstate amp would I benefit from a full on distortion pedal like the Vox V8 or the Boss you demo in this video for a good Iron Maiden-Metallica tone with actual bass response

  • @capturedbyjupiter
    @capturedbyjupiter 8 років тому

Good stuff. How about a video comparing distortion pedals vs overdrive pedals as clean channel and crunch channel boosts? I find that pedals which utilize hard clipping circuits can sometimes retain more of the pick attack and can be less spongy than soft clipping - even when using them as clean boosts. Also, using soft clipping as a second stage/crunch channel can actually achieve some higher gain tones while sounding more rounded and thus pleasant to the ears. Subjective and contingent on gear of course.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  8 років тому +1

+Alan Hinton We'd agree with that for the most part Alan. Something on boosting clean and dirty channels is worth a show for sure. Thanks for watching!

OCD at 18 volts vs Carpe Diem at 18 volts. Also you guys should try Bogner's Harlow pedal. My personal secret weapon. Love the show!

Yes you must bring on ...The King. Incredibly versatile. It can actually do a credible clean sound that makes whatever amp you have sound upmarket...yet you can get killer shred tones and everything in between is usable. How many pedals have 10 or more 'sweet spots'.

I got another idea for doing pedal videos.
Let's say you hav the right pedal you wanted after watching lots of reviews and which version/model year to buy and so on. But it sounds horrible. Why?
Cause some pedals are horrible combined with certain amps.
Like using a RAT on a marshall compared to a great sound when you put it through a fender.
Would be great to see a video for the all-time classic pedals like the Boss Metal / OD-1, Tubescreamer etc. to see at which amp you can get the full potential and of course some no-go combinations.
Thx for doing some shorter videos.

Hi!! Good show, maybe too short. It could be great a comparision ibanez tube screamer 808 vs. maxon od 808

I have always preferred the SD-1's asymmetrical clipping over the Tube Screamer. However, I am putting the new TS mini on my mini fly board. I wanna see how it does in various set ups. Thanks guys!

I though with the gain backed off they both sounded similar, but when you pushed the gain the Boss SD-1W really cut through better. I think both pedals would gladly be a welcome addition to any board. I do wonder if Boss made this pedal in trying to compete with boutique guys building Klon Klones.

Why not a demo of the Ibanez Jet Driver and also a demo of the BBE G' Screamer?

Sorry if I missed it before in another episode, but what are those interconnect cables between the pedals and the switcher?

Dan, off topic, but could you do a video of your various products? I was on the website and there is a lot of great stuff, but all I kept thinking was, "I wish they would do a detailed video on the various products..." Thanks for your indulgence. FYI, I'll take the Boss. Words cannot express [enough] my dislike for the tube screamer.

FYI - Gigrig products, not Pedal Show. I'm old, but can figure out Tshirts, coffee mugs and hats :-) Again, much thanks.
