    ER4 is still available and on their website. I found it under the UISP section of the store. I just ordered one as a cold spare for my network. Thanks for the update!

    Been a fan of Edgerouters since 2017. Have about 50 Edgerouter X SFPs out in production. These are rock solid devices. Just grabbed 6 more last week.

    I actually just replaced my ISP router modem combo with the Edgerouter X SFP and man, is it so much better! It was super easy to setup and I just took the sfp module from my ISP's modem and plugged it right into this and enabled the proper WAN functions. I have fiber, so it was a fun suprise to see their hardware was just using that to hook up. So far its been flawless. The old router had issues where certain devices would go offline and I have not had that problem with this. Having a proper vLAN setup for the second household in my home has been awesome. Only real drawback is ISP related functions dont work like TV services, which I dont subscribe to. If you want a very reliable and highly configurable home router, this is a great device!

    Running an ER-4 and keeping it up to date on the home network since January 2020. Its been rock solid for me. I also had 2 WANs for a while and it worked great for that.

    I still use and love my EdgeRouter 4... I know Ubiquiti has pretty much abandoned these, but I still hold hope for a new range of products from the Edge line. A new Edgerouter with 10G support, full DPI support, IDS/IPS support... a man can dream....

    Willie, you should point out (perhaps add a note in the video description) that the PoE on the ER-X SFP and is 24VDC passive only, and that ER-X passthrough is 24VDC only when powered by 24VDC. It will work with UAP-AC Lite and UAP-AC-LR but I think those are the only two Unifi APs that can be powered by the passive 24VDC PoE.

    My ER-12 is still going strong after a few years in service. I actually started my homelab with an ER-6 but wanted a few more interfaces to play with so I upgraded to the 12. Originally I started with a pretty bone-stock configuration, but over time I've added a 2nd WAN interface so I can failover to 5g if my primary internet has problems. I followed your VPN guide so I can connect to my home setup when I'm on the road. I setup one of the interfaces to connect through NordVPN automatically. I'm doing DNS redirection so all DNS requests go to my pi-holes. I setup a management network with limited access for my networking equipment and servers with IPMI. I'm working on moving my IoT devices to a separate network/vlan as well. It's not the most complicated setup but it's definitely enough to justify using an edgerouter over some d-linksysco box with only two interfaces.
    Your channel and the Crosstalk Solutions channel have been invaluable for figuring the ins and outs (pardon the pun) of the Edgerouters.

      In the good old days of mail relay servers on every floor of an office building, I solved that with a lights timer. Off at 1 am, back on at 2 am. Windows (3.?) didn’t seem to mind too much.

      Seriously though… I think my little ERX’s only last about 3 years and then ports start misbehaving. Even after a reboot. The remaining ports are still going but I need a replacement NOW so hopefully Willie will give me some ideas.

    I still rocking my ER3 Lite and now on my second one. Its the only device which always survives my upgrades. It pretty much does everything i need and i use it in combination with my Unifi switches and seperate Unifi controller. Only recently i am now running to its limitations having a WLAN VLAN (from Fib) and multi VLAN Lan. this has been the most stable network device. ❤

    Wille, Just search for ER-4 in the search box. They are in stock, but just not showing correctly on the website. (according to a UI team member on the forums, they are aware of it and are working with their web team to get it fixed) I just ordered one the other day!

    I'm definitely a big fan of these devices. Before I went all in on Unifi with the UDM Pro, I had an EdgeRouter X SFP and a 24-port Edge Switch!

      Same. Only reason I switched from Edge to Unifi is my 24 port switch failed after 3 years of use. When I got the Unifi gear it was only because the Edge gear was "sold out" or overpriced elsewhere.

    Have had an ER4 since 2019, Good unit. Love the dual wan failover and balancing. But mine has issues losing the interface stack. Eth0 will just disappear. Usually a commit and save will bring it back, last time it dropped all configuration from eth0 and had to re config manually.

    There is a limbo where products go after they drop from the store before they hit the vintage/legacy page. The US-16-XG (the first aggregation switch) are in there right now. The product page is still searchable on the website and in the store, but it's not in the product tree or in the store categories.

    A few weeks ago I was checking for firmware updates for my stuff. Every system I use has their support page bookmarked. When I clicked on the ERx or ER4 bookmarks nothing would come up. That sent me on a wild search to see what was going on. I did find the firmware / documentation downloads for these again. But I am still a bit worried as the firmware updates don't feel like they are coming out at the rate they were in the past. I love having the option of the SFP port on my ER4.

    Have you tried the latest v2.0.9 HF 7 Firmware on an ERX? I had to revert to v1 after it started hanging all the time (losing the PPPOE connection and being unresponsive). Back on v1.10.11 and it's been up for a week with no problems.

    I'm trying to get wired internet to my whole house without pulling cables or doing anything extra. My question is can I run one from my fiber ONT in my main communications panel and set it up so it is a wired backhaul to 2 wireless routers on opposite sides of the house? Basically,, ONT>EdgeRouter>Main wireless router>backhaul access point router, if that makes sense.

    • @coriding
      @coriding 7 місяців тому

      Something like this can be done, but for small deployments there's almost always only one router. Access points should be in bridge mode, and basically act like a switch, not routers, and DHCP should only be enabled on a single device for the whole network. Think of the router as the one device connected to the Internet (ie ONT), and everything else just acts like a switch. In my opinion, it's always best to run all connections to a central closet, it gives far more versatility, and reliability, eliminating points of failure potentially.

  •  Рік тому

    We have two networks of many Unifi switches and APs at marina/yacht clubs, with an ER-8 at each site handling NAT and DHCP duties. Two AirFiber pairs link each from one datacenter for Internet access on static IPs. I could home both networks to a co-lo cabinet in that datacenter and use only one router instead of two. Should I then use a USG Pro as my router? Unifi network OS is hosted on a server at the datacenter. What would be the downside of USG Pro vs ER in that scenario? No need for VPNs or extensive firewalling as the networks exist to provide hundreds of individual users access to the Internet, but no cross device traffic.

    I love my edgrouter lite, but finally moved over to pfSense last month. I'm keeping the lite as a backup. The lack of development for the edgerouter series in the last few years and I'm not particularly interested in their unifi routers was the tipping point.

    Back when we first started using Ubiquiti products...back around 2006 or 2007, when the first "square" unifi indoor APs were out, no Unif switches or gateways were out yet, and the edgeswitches and edgerouters were the ones to use. Deployed truckloads of 'em! But as the first Unifi switches and gateways came out...and they matured...we started using them more and more. Once Chris B from PFSense was hired to take over the Unifi product line...it really matured and as an MSP it's my preference to have as much in one dashboard as possible. Manage the whole network stack from top to bottom. Most of the "Edge" guys are gone...firmware update have really slowed (not sure if any have been out in the past 6 months). I tread the "edge" line as dead. Have to go "out of your way" to manage 'em anyways. The UNMS management portal never really got matured well....still a half baked product that's ..well, not even a fraction as useful as the Unifi portal. And..Unifi switches and Gateways properly integrate with Unifi APs. The edge products...it's like using an old HP ProCurve switch with Unifi APs...you just don't have all the settings to work with..managing MDNS, Port Isolation, Switch Port Profiles, how VLANs integrate..all that good stuff.

    Hi Willy I need help please.
    I've set up a VPN l2tp on my edgerouter X SFP. I can connect to it without any issue, but I can't access a specific computer on my remote network from the my PC where I'm connecting as VPN. On my PC, if I connect via ssh on the EDGEROUTER after establishing the vpn connection, I can PING the machine I'm trying to reach. But only from the ssh session on the EdgeRouter. If I open the prompt on my PC where I'm connecting with l2tp vpn, I can't PING the remote PC I'm trying to reach on the other side.
    Can you help please 🥺🥺🥺?
    Thanks

    They are pretty advanced firewalls from a routing and ACL perspective indeed. But with the latest minor release three years ago and firewalls like OPNsense and PFsense based options I do not deploy new ones anymore.
    Mainly because it is good to have a network IPS for IoT devices and alike.

    I used to run the ERPro8, only with the latest UDM Pro 3.x branch updates they are basically on-par with what I used to require/use. Rock solid, absolutely great devices. High routing speed, run cool and even with the age they have now, they are very much better than the ISP routers (typically).

    I wonder.. Will it work with Ubiquiti Acces points like U6+ ?

    • @jonpinkley2844
      @jonpinkley2844 Рік тому +1

      Define "work with". The passthrough PoE will not power the U6+ which needs 44-57V DC 9W so you will need an injector or PoE switch that is compatible. EdgeRouters don't have a Unifi controller built in, so if you want stats, you will need something to run the Unifi controller on. But the ER-X supports vlans. You can download Mike Potts' free Ubiquiti Home Network pdf book which has instructions for using Ubiquiti Unifi AP's with the ER-X.

    • @furTron
      @furTron Рік тому

      @@jonpinkley2844 hey! Thanks for your answer!
      So as I understood, Ubiquiti Access points (eg UAP AC-LR) will work together with EdgeRouter (power supply is an another topic), BUT I won't have any Statistics, right? that'd be enough for me.

    I bought an EdgeRouter X SFP a few years ago. When I read up forums that to remove a bridge that I had setup, it was best to reset the config the defaults and reconfigure it... I sold it. I couldn't believe how poor the management interface and software was compared to RouterOS from Mikrotik I was very familiar with. I love Ubnt wifi devices that I sell and install at clients, but it comes to a router, I always install Mikrotik now. I tried the Edgerouter... total disappointment.
