Thank you all for your concern. The black cloud has lifted. The season always marches on, with or without us. Time away has helped, so has prayer. Enjoy the good times and the bad times since we are to count it all joy when we suffer diverse trials.

I know this was posted a while ago, but I just managed to come across it. This year I started "Permaculture Northeast" in Pennsylvania. I took many ideas from your videos as well as those of Geoff Lawton, Mark Shepard, Justin Rhodes, and many others. I taught myself permaculture and God has led it to be both my passion and gift. Yet being the first year, with very very limited funds, many things were tough. Do I go more on the route of an orchard? Do I focus on animals? Do I focus on STUN theory of Mark Shepard? Where is the focus? Or do I try to balance and juggle all of them? It's been very difficult at times with low yields and a handful of plants that I'm trying my hardest to grow. Yet there has also been huge success and great breakthroughs.
All in all, seeing this video here has helped me to see that my "heroes" even see the same things and face the same problems that I do. All the more reminder to me even personally that farming does not satisfy completely, yet functions as a job/career as anything else, of which some of us find more happiness in than others. Yet our source of living water does satisfy.
I have reached out many times to those I have learned permaculture from, and have never heard anything back. And even if I never do, I still look forward to getting to know you one day for the rest of our days. And in those days, you will see that you were used to bring comfort to those who needed it. From your field to mine "pun intended" :)

You are such a special human being. Your videos have helped me out of a dark period. As a teacher I get deflated at the end of the school year. Depleted energy and exhaustion makes us vulnerable to these short term depressions. I want to tell you that your humility and self-criticism show me that you are a self-aware person. Brave to show your vulnerability. This is a great antidote for so much unrealistic, magical promises made by so many other youtubers. Thank you and godspeed in your day to day life. You deserve all the happiness and prosperity the world can offer.

This just popped in my feed today. Stefan, farmers aren't the only ones going through this. We all experience this at many times in life so you are not alone. Remember, like plants and animals, we all need the proper balanced nutrition to be at our best. Eat good food. Make good choices. Imagine the silver lining even when you can't see it. ~One Love~

Hi Stefan, you may not remember me. Back in 2014, me (an Australian lad and his family) lobbed in to your orchard unannounced, you and and one of your interns talked, laughed and inspired us. I am now a commercial permaculture orchardist back in Australia and this is in large part thanks to you! You are not only a farmer you are an educator and an inspirer extraordinaire. Not only are you growing your own orchard you are also growing a movement across the world to better food production and to more resilient communities. I don't write this just to make you feel better, I write this to simply let you know that you have achieved more than you actually realise. Thanks for sharing the reality of farming and the realities of life!

Hi stuntmansyd, I'd start with undertaking a permaculture design certificate, then I would intern on a farm or orchard. And all the while read read read. It is a journey of self really and orchard knowledge is the cream on top! We've got an open day in November if you wanted to check our orchard out blackbarnfarm.com.au. and of course watch Stefan's film and read Michael Phillips books!

Stefan! You DO NOT suck! You are a huge inspiration to us all. I've learned a lot of technical stuff watching you. But it's your kindness and your love for others (people, birds, insects) that is most inspiring, and that is the kind of thing that really changes people. And your honesty, like in this video today, the courage to turn on the camera and talk to us about it when you probably didn't want to - that's inspiring too. Thanks for sharing the reality. Thanks for making a youtube channel. And thanks for your kindness.

Dear Stephan. I have never posted a comment on public media, but your honesty is a gift to me that I simply have to acknowledge. Thank you for your honesty, it is the perfect antidote to all the lies of beauty magazines and the 'Media' in general. I have grown trees most of my adult life and am considering becoming a tenant farmer simply to spend my last decade planting a large permaculture orchard. Your enthusiasm whilst you are 'up' has inspired me, but I have wondered this last couple of weeks am I promising my friends and family something that I might not be able to deliver? It is clear you are a global leader in your 'field' and if you can publicly admit that you have doubts and that you have bad seasons then you teach me now not to fear my doubts, but like you simply share them. Thank you. Please remember your farm may be small, but your 'seeds' of hope have been sown via the internet around the entire world, your current crop is no longer just the farm produce of this or next year, but the spirit you plant and nurture within all humanity that you 'inoculate'. Please find the poem "Footsteps" not because I'm selling religion, but simply to say, your words have carried me through recent doubts so now let all those you have inspired carry you for a while. I'm not rich , but if you need cash to help fix a tractor then start a crowd funding page and I will give $100 because it is a fraction of my debt to people like you who are paving a better future for my four young sons. For me this is the most important video you've ever made and had the courage to share. Sir I salute you.

Hang in there. This is farming. I was raised on a dairy farm and I can relate to what you are going through. This is why I went into the field of computer. Only to find out the same happens in other fields as well. I had many days where I wanted to quit but the majority were positive days. I can't speak to your capabilities as a farmer but I vividly remember when I first saw you on youtube. The Rhodes family were visiting you on the Great American Farm Tour. How impressive!! I've nominated that vlog for the "Top 10 list" on White House on the Hills channel. This year we planted our first 3 fruit trees as closely as we could by YOUR teaching!. 3 different fruit trees, 2 nitrogen fixes, multiple perenials something blooming all year. And because we have only owned the land just 5 years and had to reclaim the land the soil is still poor. I planted cowpeas along the whole northside for more nitrogen fixing. Thank you Stefan! Be encouraged as you reach people all over the world. We are in southcentral Indiana, US.

Thank you for posting this. Everyone shows the "good" side of farming. The setbacks, failures, and hard physical work that people don't see do take a toll. Last year's drought lost over 100 tree seedlings. But being in the field connected to nature is a feeling hard to describe. Look at what we GET to do instead of what we NEED to do. Anything we do that improves the soil, planting a tree, or growing healthy food makes the world a better place. It beats the alternative.

We thought our chickens had a problem because egg production dropped way off. These birds free range. They have always laid their eggs in their nests in the coop. The little darlings found a spot under a bush they liked better. We found a couple dozen eggs there. When we added a lot more straw to the nests and shifted the paddock away from the shrub they went back to laying in the nests. I have really enjoyed your videos. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Discouraging words from family who don't understand isn't always well recieved, however hearing from one with so much knowledge & experience is of great value to those of us looking to get started. Faith as defined by the presence of hope & purpose within the individual can get shaky when we are faced with adversity. So for the time, have faith that this too shall pass! For what it's worth, many of us are rooting for you & yours :)

I have learned a lof from you and consider you as a master in the field of Permaculture fruit trees. Especially your joyful and comic approach to the diciplin was very uplifting. Sometimes it helps to joke about all that tbat sucks. Joking and laughing release the sorrow and set joy free. Also dirty jokes can help :)
And for the chickens: same thing here and in a friends Permaculture COOP: Almost a complete drop to 0 in egg production over the last 4-5 days. I tell myself it has to do with the moon (especially the lunar eclipse from tonight)... No idea. We have 1 egg from 40 layers.
Thank you for sharing this insight in your emotional life and may the universe uplift you with some good laugh!

You don't suck at farming :-) from your video, it's obvious you care about nature and you are farming in a way that is far more harmonious than most. I was working on a farm this summer, he has 2 books and has been doing it for 30 years, so much went wrong for us this season, I suppose that is the nature of farming. I also get low points, in one too, I read an article about there being a summer version of SAD. Eat well, sleep well, socialise, meditate, go somewhere with nature :-) say hello to all the birds on your farm :-) p.s. you should have more viewers on this channel, it's great, I think I said before, put permaculture orchard in your channel name, most people know you by that :-)

Stefan, I never wanted to farm before I saw your videos, and now I hope I once can...what you're doing, with farming and youtube, is much more than a harvest, you're inspiring countless people like me to think differently about growing food and even how to live life. And we talk about it with friends. If money is a concern to you, please set up a patreon page and/or get a bitcoin wallet so we can contribute to the unbelievable work you're doing.
Tu es vraiment une source d'inspiration pour moi, et j'ai toujours hâte de voir le prochain vidéo,, des fois je ne saisis rien aux techniqualitées, mais j'aime toujours les voir. Ta narration est excelentre et les images font rêver.
Stay safe, and if you're done with it... then you're done and find a happier way to live your life.
    Love,
    Nicolas

Every one of those hard seasons is a tempering session. No greater wisdom building experience exists than some sort of failure that you feel on a personal level and I feel it's smart to recognize the importance of suffering in this process. You can throw all the time and learning in the world at something and all you'll get is perspective. Take that perspective and add a dash of suffering, and the result is wisdom.

You are just WAY too hard on yourself. We have gained so much from your teaching and we admire you SO much! My mother grew up on my grandparent's farm and there were definitely difficult times. You can't control the weather, or thieves. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and knowledge. :)

The Bible says "Do not grow weary in well doing." Which implies that even important, meaningful, good work, like stewarding an orchard and animals, can wear you down and discourage you. Every season is unique -- never the right amount of rain or sunshine or heat/cool or strength/energy/motivation. Never the problem you figured out how to manage last year, but instead a new one! Ugh! But press on, bc you *are* good at this. Just not perfect yet, hah. You are creative and inspiring -- and you must consider that though your own orchard might deliver a disappointing crop this year, your total value goes so far beyond that, bc hundreds of us have planted orchards following your brilliant design and advice. So breathe deep, take a break, enjoy something different for a few days -- maybe plan a circuit to see our pitiful attempts -- and come back refreshed. You are much beloved by your students, friend.

Mr Sobkowiak, I know this post is almost 2 years old. If you do happen to see this I’d like for you to know how much I enjoy your teaching. I’m in the process of adopting your teaching towards my own small orchard here in Portland, Oregon USA. You are such an inspiring teacher. Thank you for being honest. I truly value everything you do!

Position the intake of the pump, lower than your water source, so as to push down and into the pump. If the pump is sucking water from a natural source, simply place the pump inside of a tub, so the tub acts as a sort of submerging device.

    • @drakekay6577
      @drakekay6577 3 роки тому +1

Also, if you do happen to have any seals between the pump and water source, check that they are functioning.

Hi Stefan! I enjoy your videos very much. I have a very small backyard garden in Calgary Alberta. So far things were going so well. I was so most counting the tomatoes and beans I was going to collect in a week. This week we have had hail twice. By backyard was covered with shredded leaves. It was so depresing! I just could not make myself get out. I finally surrendered and said to myself that mother nature will do its thing. I am so small and powerless. Hopefully I am still going to get something out of it and maybe next year will be better. I know I just can't do without my back yard. I hope things turn out ok with your harvest. Its not over until the season is over. All the best!

You are an inspiring character and bettering oneself and ones environment is apart of the journey. I will quote Tim Allen "Never give up, never surrender!"

It’s July, again. How are you? I just found you and must tell you how much your vids make me laugh. I am 65. Just found permaculture. You are way ahead of our times and such an inspiration. Of all the reasons you listed....the stealing burns the most. It’s a rotten feeling. Time should heal it as time is the gift God gave us. Each season presents new times of growing-though we think it’s the same...that is an illusion. We live in time. We must always observe and respond. Vigilance is ongoing because we are living creatures. Your gardens are simply amazing. Please keep teaching. 🙏

I just subscribed to your channel in the fall of 2019. Thank You for your honesty during the good and the bad times. You are such a positive soul 99% of the time, thank you for a glimpse of the not so great moments. Judging from the wealth of information that you share, I consider you a fantastic farmer and teacher. I hope to continue to learn from your videos as I expand my small farm in NH. I think I have heard you mention on occasion the Master Gardener. I am pretty certain there is a curse on our land and we will toil and struggle to attain a harvest for our entire lives. The rain falls on the just and the unjust. You are obviously an amazingly skilled farmer and the bad times are just a reminder that no matter how good we are, there will always be things beyond our control. It is our ability to adapt and move forward that will determine our progress in life. Thanks for continuing to teach and share your wisdom.

Thank you Stefan for being upfront and vocal. We ordinary people sometimes forget that Every job has its joys, challenges and dark days. Non-farming jobs hinder your ability to appreciate the little joys in life and put you on a treadmill / routine that may lead no-where. It is great to know that You do remember that it will change and be better in the future. Many farmers, especially during the droughts we have in Australia see no future, that the rains will no come in time to help. Sometimes they just cannot bear the weight of seeing their livestock and the land suffer so much. Eventually it does rain and they country undergoes an amazing change, that is delightful to see, feel and enjoy.A smile goes a long way to brighten up the day for some, walking amongst the life of the orchard or farm does it for others. Talking about it all makes it easier to endure as a trouble or doubt shared is easier to endure. Enjoy life as you do make a difference for many others. Thank you

Our 2018 season was awful. Annual vegetables eaten by bugs no matter what we did. Low egg output. Half our year's chicks hatched eaten by predators. Japanese beetles and deer eating our young fruit trees. Scutch grass winning. Japanese Honeysuckle all over our woods (we "inherited" that problem.) Plus some health issues...
    Oy, it was depressing.
So I understand what you're saying. And it does get better.
    God bless you.
P.S. thank you for all the things you have taught me. Thank you. Thank you.

Stefan, Nobody hits as hard as life, especially Mother Earth. We all have are demons and torments, but it ain't about how hard you get hit, it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, and how many other lost souls that you help along the way. Just wanted to personally thank you and tell you how much my family and this lost soul have enjoyed your movie and other short clips. You have inspired me, through your unique teaching style and sense of humor, to plant my own trios on our 17 acre family farm, and I am proud to say we have 33 trios and expanding. I may not be doing everything exactly like you, but that’s the beauty of the design in which you teach. Glad to hear you are doing better my friend. Maintenant lève-toi, dépoussiérez-vous et reprenez le combat! Best Regards, Michael Bocskovits - Twisted Swale Farm, Knoxville, TN
