Personally, I find Tech Wars 2 to be the best version of the Tug of War mods we have. Way more counter-play available, and Unit variability, and there's more the player can do to have skill expression. But Direct Strike is a great place to start!
Agreed, Tech Wars 2 is my fav tug-o-war map, a little slow and some balance issues (did they ever fix zealot spam? good players going all in on top lane then selling everything to max out zealots was basically uncounterable), but tons of skill expression and fun unusual units.
@@kirktown2046 That's definitely counterable. If you're aware of your opponent's strategy, there's nearly always options to stop it. With a zealot spam rush, if we have stealth tech, the predators would make short work of them. Ravens with turrets would also buy you time. Science Vessels will AoE them since they're considered Biological I believe. Lurkers. TW2 has so many options.
@@DonaldPulsar Not sure if you've faced it executed by top players, fairly sure I'm one of the better tw2 players, but many stopped playing around pandemic cause it was not counterable... Predators lose for the cost and it comes online before cloak, you only can have maybe 2-3 ravens and 1 tech, if that. Armor cheese doesn't work cause of their high base DPS and 2 attacks... Meta became a giant all in on protoss lane because of this. All the things you'd think would counter it doesn't, even desperate micro with all 3 scvs and missile strikes doesn't counter it.
Grubby, you should really try out Castle Fight. It's similar in premise, but completely different in execution. Personally I think it's better than Direct Strike :P
@@TrollsauHater reasons why I like Castle Fight better: 1) Each "race" has fixed buildings/units. There is no randomness involved. You can't end up with terrible composition (as Grubby did recently), or with overpowered composition. 2) You can be a lot more proactive in the game, as your worker has a rescue strike, or can build a tower to defend, or you can buy an item that helps you defend, and you don't need to wait 2 minutes until it's your turn again. The game is constantly going on. 3) There's a much bigger variety of units (although you can't play with all of them in the same game) 4) There are "special buildings", which give it a lot of flavor. 5) It's designed a lot better, as units are made to counter each other. It may happen to some extent in DS too, but not nearly on the level of CF. 6) It may lack "heroes", but it has a lot of heroic units. And even the regular units have some interesting special abilities.
Theres also some more advanced strategies like blocking your own mobs, halting productions and getting them to launch in waves. When you kill enemies you get bounties sometimes going strats the out gold your opponent and stall are really good.
wow, I cant believe grubby is uploading second custom game video withing a week. I'm not into regular wc3 rts melee myself, but I really enjoy watching grubby's skills. Im more into custom games myself, and this one is actually one of my favourites. also there is option to choose classic mode, then you get to pick a race and can only use the racial heroes and tavern heroes and only the of the race. im not gonna bother doing any back seating, enjoy yourself grubby ps, on the tooltip you can see what abilties the unit starts with and which ones require upgrades cause its a bit different than melee, some units have some abilites already learned and can learn some t2 abilites at t1
grubby im glad you streamed this. but your stream has caused a massive influx of new players that has nearly made this unplayable for veterans 🤣. I'd love if you showed people the guide and maybe a lesson on never go 4 mines🙏
Wow so much effort into this map, amazing what w3 players can do, do mappers get paid at least decently out of creating mods though? I'm really wondering
Fellas develop these map projects for years and don't make a dime. If you play a cool map it most likely exists because a cool guy thought it would be cool. Some map makers have patreons and whatnot for their projects, but these are rare cases and I wouldn't call it making money; just getting some of your pot noodles paid for.
i love how 4 days later grubby still almost only make bad decisions in direct strike. youd think a progamer, especially a wc3 pro gamer, would be able to intuitively see what is value in DS but instead its just bad decisions after bad decisions. enjoyable to watch him sloooowly learn though. almost feel bad for his teammates who in these games tend to try and patiently pick up his slack with no complaints at all x)
If you've grinded a game to dust before, you learn to appreciate the innocence of not doing the same thing that let you destroy a game when you find something new that you enjoy. He's making bad decision after bad decision because he is.. simply enjoying the ride, toying around like a kid "just playing" a game. Instead of seriously going back, analyzing what could be done better, watching what better players do to steal tricks - that whole routine of grinding a game to dust drains it from simple enjoyment.
i often get flamed for rushing 4 goldmines, but how is having more gold bad? i often argue with teammates and enemies. and when you prove them all wrong it's "lucky you had a good roll"
@@ShinigamiSamaH I've not played this gamemode, but I've played a lot of similar RTS, auto-battlers etc., and in general investing in gold is only a good idea if your team can support the handicap of your lackluster contribution until you start ramping up. It's a high risk/medium reward, as it'll only actually pay out if your team doesn't fall behind, and aslong as you yourself don't fall behind in other aspects in w/e game/gamemode you're in. And even then it isn't a guranteed win, especially if a core mechanic is RNG.
@erlendlarsenholme7515 Yeah, in my limited experience playing this gamemode (mostly in SC2), my takeaway is to pay attention to the field to gauge the teams. Only rush income if your side is winning, and preferably only one person do it at a time. On the other hand, if your direct opponent has no units, likely playing greedy, mean you should start pumping out more stuff to overwhelm them.
you get gold for controlling mid and heroes getting xp can also snowball, by rushing 4gm you completely kill your tempo and can surrender an early tower and many minutes of crucial early mid control, marginalizing the gold lead you may finally get 10 minutes after investing
Mid control gives you gold. Going 4 mines let’s you lose mid and effectively loses your team 3 gold mines while giving the enemy team 3. 4 gold mines takes like 12+ minutes to be worth it so you are guaranteed to lose the early game.
Hate this map in starcraft 2... It's the only thing anyone plays in arcade :( So many excellent maps that aren't played cause of DS. The originals DS maps on broodwar were much more micro intensive and crazy, these latest versions are slower and lack worker cheese/micro. Civilization Wars I think has a tighter balanced/gameplay experience for a very similar wc3 map concept.
@@kirktown2046 Indeed its ridiculous how much of a bad job Blizzard did with the editor in SC2, a real shame how bad arcade is there. I dont need a hundred barely functioning maps that might be deep, Warcraft 3 has a million deep and well working maps.
