Dudeee I had a huge spring awakening hyperfixation in early 2021 in the absolute pits my mental health and it was just an unbelievably helpful comfort for me. I protected onto Moritz so unbelievably hard in regards to his initial disgust towards his sexuality (im aroace ironically but the self hatred was a /lot/) and the overwhelming academic stress I felt, seeing his story pan out really put into perspective that I desperately needed to start helping myself and I can't express how thankful I am for it. I don't think about it as often anymore but its had so many lasting impacts on me as a person, as well as being the reason I've been learning and am applying to study BSL at uni next year!!! Sorry for the monologue but 10/10 banging musical I am Emotional

I had a similar experience with the show in early 2020. as an ace person also i really related to may of the characters in different ways. But with every story told, you understand not only the characters onstage, but the amazing dynamic people that portrayed them. This was something I needed to see today, and I’m so glad I did! It's still so funny to me that this musical exists! Living in Germany, I remember reading Wedekind's play in German class in 10th grade long before I even got into musicals. Needless to say it was quite a weird experience discussing an old play with such an unexpected, scandalous story! I haven't gotten into the musical yet, but one day, I'll really have to give it a listen, I think I'd love it.

In light of the allegations, I wasn't really surprised that there seemed to be genuine love between Lea and whole cast. Because I think anyone in theatre knows someone who is a different person to those they deem "worthy". If you're viewed as "talented" enough, they'll be kind, accepting, and cool with you. But bring in anyone they view as "not worthy" and another version comes out. Dismissive, cold, and openly mean sometimes. I have no doubt she and the cast , or she and Groff have a great friendship. Because she's always deemed them "worthy".
    Just IMO. 🙏

I loved the documentary! Although I think I saw Lea differently than you did. I think this actually endeared me to her. The moment she describes about falling in love with Jonathon, running up to him and asking him why he didn’t love her back was incredibly “Rachel” of her but that immediate realization, the “oh I see” moment and the willingness to let it go, not make it a thing and let him be honest with her when he felt ready was a level of empathy I wasn’t sure she had. And I adore Jonathan Groff so his clear love for her made me feel for her more. Like yeah she clearly has diva moments, she may not always see past her own needs all the time, she may have even said some real shitty things (and I’m not saying we just forget and move on from that either) but there must also be kindness there to get him to care for her the way he does ya know.

@@KittenUndercover Yeah that's what I meant from saying real shitty things that we shouldn't forget or move on from.
But when Naya Rivera died I read comments on the internet basically saying it should have been Lea that died instead.
Working in the mental health field, I'd like to leave room for people to have done awful things and not be completely bad humans with no redeeming qualities who can never grow or change. The many allegations about her left a bad taste in my mouth. Seeing her in this setting with some of the positive stories told about her make me think that perhaps she was raised poorly in those respects, perhaps she has some serious entitlement and insecurities but she isn't completely lacking in empathy and understanding for others so there is enough there that maybe she can grow into a better human.
That doesn't mean we forget what she's done. It doesn't mean everyone needs to get over it and forgive it. It just means that I'm not ready to write her off entirely just yet.
I'm Latina, I've had coworkers ask me not to speak Spanish in the office to my other peers because it offended my other white English speaking coworkers. I've seen racism and micro aggressions happen fairly frequently. But I've also seen people grow and learn and change. Hell therapy is all about trying to break out a bad patterns, grow, change, and learn to be more flexible, more considerate and more inclusive. If I framed my view of others as they've exhibited this behavior and that will never change and that is all that defines them as a person then I wouldn't have much of a job to do.

At the beginning of our journey our first venue was canceled on us due to backlash and higher ups in the community not wanting it put on. Watching this documentary and persevering despite this has made the whole experience even more important and inspired for us. It is showing next weekend and I am so proud of the cast. There is something so magical about Spring Awakening that just brings a cast together and watching it you can see that connection and love.

I will agree with some comments here, I would like to have seen more interviews with the rest of the cast - it was really heavy on the top three. And WHERE was Bill T. Jones?? Not even a mention? He was so integral to the success of the show, and such an important theater artist still doing some brilliant things - there must have been a stipulation, or contractual issue, or something.

I’m not sure why you think Lea Michele going to church to pray for a Tony is connected to her alleged diva like behavior.
If you watched the documentary closely, up until the Tony Awards SA, despite awesome reviews, was having bad ticket sales after moving to Broadway. So much so, they assumed they wouldn’t stay on Broadway long.
Jonathan Groff then states that he realized that one of the biggest points of the Tony’s is to “sell your show”. So the night before the nominations, he and Lea went to the church. And she did not say she was praying that she got nominated. She said, “please God…please help us tomorrow with the Tony nominations”. Not “me”. Please help “us”.
They wanted to be nominated so that their show would survive. And all the nominations and wins accomplished that for the show. And made their show begin having full audiences and selling out.
On top of that, Lea made a joke about how Jonathan gave money at the church and she didn’t, and they joked about that being why he got nominated and she didn’t. But it was funny. And hardly diva-esk.
I’m not saying that the allegations against her on the set of Glee aren’t true.
But you are making drama in your comment, where there isn’t any.
Watch it again. If anything, it sounded like it was Jonathan’s idea. And to me, it sounded very much like a very tight knit cast just wanted their show to survive.
“‘Spring Awakening’ without the Tony Awards would have gone away.”~The show’s director
If you are set on believing something about somebody, that’s all you’re going to see…your own projection.

I think that as much as I went into the doc with Lea’s allegation in mind, something about everyone else made me forgot about them, I mean just for the runtime of course, but I do think we got that glance of Lea Michele being Lea Michele and everyone else, specially Jonathan Groff, loving her, in spite of that. I think she is as human as everyone can be

There’s being human and then there’s being rude and a brat for years on a set. This cast knew her before that, but it’s also a pretty white cast, so…

I still have yet to watch this documentary. Pre-pandemic, I had plans to produce Spring Awakening which obviously got postponed and later changed to being Urinetown instead. I do plan on watching the doc within the next week, especially since I hope to come back to Spring Awakening in the near future. Also, as I'm writing this there are 69 comments so I do apologize sincerely for changing it to 70. I'm also here for the wholesome content in the new apartment!

honestly i have been a fan of spring awakening for years and loved the documentary… my biggest critique was not mentioning or showing any scenes of hanschen and ernst (but showing and talking about all the other songs) and instead making time for lea and jonathan 85% of the time?

I'm curious, was Skylar Astin much of a part of this documentary? I know that being in the cast of this show also started his career, but besides that my knowledge of the show is pretty limited. He's just one of my absolute favorite dudes in the industry. If any of y'all have seen Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist you'll get why.

    • @bohemelavie1
      @bohemelavie1 2 роки тому +2

No, he wasn't really. Like he was there, but wasn't really focused on... it really focused on Groff and Lea the most with a moderate focus on John Gallagher jr and some on Lauren Pritchard. I would have LOVED a little bit more focus on the rest of the cast too (also a huge Skylar fan since Zoey's) he does sing some in tge doco, but no real proper interview moment with him

    • @dd2394

There is a short interview with the doc director where he discusses that there was so much to work with that he focused on the story of SA, the rise of the show after the Tonys, the reunion and the special bond between JG and LM that he discovered and loved.

When I watched the documentary I compared it a lot to my somewhat recent watching of the Merrily We Roll Along Documentary (the best worst thing that ever happened). Both documentaries were about shows designed for teenage/college aged actors to get a strong debut with a raw emotional performance, but its interesting seeing how the vibe of the cast differed so much between the two shows. Merrily flopped hard, and the cast was very much bittersweet about the experience, but admit it was a great thing even if they were still sad it failed, and most of the cast had smaller scale careers compared to the Spring Awakening cast, whose leads all went on to strong TV careers while others like Lilli Cooper and Jenn Damaniano became tony noms in other musicals later on.

I love this show, I got into it WAY late but still love it so much. I was kind of curious why some people really didn’t get interviewed much? Hoping it was just scheduling conflicts and not being overlooked.
I will say there was a point in the doc, maybe an hour in when I was starting to get annoyed. I thought they were covering the show/songs in order so they suddenly jumped to totally fucked and I was very confused. Like are we gonna talk about Lea Michele’s vagina and not Moritz’s story? But thankfully they got to it eventually.

I wish the rest of the cast beyond the big 3 got more than 1 line. And usually that line was like, yeah, I had fun, it was a weird thing. I feel like it focused so much on Lea and Jonathan Groff, and to a slightly lesser extent John Gallagher Jr. Like, I see enough of Lea and Jonathan on tv, I want to hear what the people who stayed more on the theatre side of the world did and thought about it.

I took my daughter to see Spring Awakening based on her recommendation. She was in her 20s, so don't judge. I really enjoyed the documentary and think the cast was and is amazing. I know there is a lot of hatred for Lea Michele because of her terrible behavior during Glee. Even though I can't defend that, I fear that we are in a time where we are always defined by the behavior of her past. I hope Lea has grown and learned since then, but I wonder how classic divas like Katherine Hepburn and Betty Davis would have fared in the age of social media. I don't think so well.

Boy, can we all just get over whatever really happened Between star Lea, and her wanna be diva cast mates . This is 2022. Everyone successful is horrible. I saw Spring Awaking in 2006. Amazing. Lea was standout. She has earned the right to be as much bItch as Mariah or Whitney or Barbra. She carried Glee for six years, a glee stadium tour, countless hits, a relationship with her costar and dealt with the VERY public loss. That hating girl never even met Cory. Give the poor girl a break. And it's all those twitters about her are not information. It is just rumors. All these you tubers jumping on the vigilante trend to get easy likes. That is irresponsible. How you frame things is important.

I haven’t seen the documentary but Spring Awakening was a big nostalgic show for me, it was the first time I watched an…ahem…”slime tutorial” of the OBC on UA-cam and it was in 10 minute parts and horrible quality but my little gay heart sang when I saw Lea’s boobs 😂. I also have a lot of nostalgia for the West End cast because Iwan Rheon played Moritz and i looooooved Misfits at the time. Ah memories.
