I set the spool tension knob on every baitcaster exactly the same. Set so the spool has just a hint of play and it stays there. I then adjust the magnetic brakes according to the weight of the lure. The only exception is a really heavy lure that exceeds the maximum mag brake setting but that is very rare for me since I almost always throw tiny lures. Side note: If your spool tension knob is set applying tension to the spool shaft remember to loosen it for storage. I also loosen all drags before storage.
Just to add , i got in the habit to stop the spool with my thumb when the lure hits the water. I used to adjust the reel all the time. With 3 different baitcaster setups now a rarely adjust. Even in a kayak I have no problem. Now spinning reels , I suck! Need a video for those reels 😂
@@LostInTackle Yup dude you got it right. Sometimes I turn my wrist so the spool is vertical. I heard that helps. I like that Lifetime Tamarack you have. It kinda proves a cheap boat can catch fish too. I have a Tamarack Pro 😂 My Garmin Striker 4 ➕ , Yakattack battery and mounts cost more then the kayak 🛶
I think a lot of people turn away from bait casters because they either buy a cheap one, or don’t know how to set it up properly. If you’re new to bait casting, or want to get into it. Spend the extra money and get a solid reel. It’ll save you a massive headache. Plenty of UA-cam videos out there to help you learn how to set up the reel. Like this one. 😂
@@LostInTackle I can’t speak on the black max, but from what I understand that’s like the budget reel of choice. The SLX is a great starting point tho for sure. It’s a good reel, but you go up another $100 you can get into a tatula. It’s night a and day difference. The best reels to start with in my opinion, are the SLX, and the Daiwa Fuego.
Bro I’m a fellow Ohioan (Youngstown). Just bought my first bait cast set up. I appreciate & respect your knowledge in many areas so if I can’t figure this out it’s probably your fault…Kidding. Great videos and keep up the good work!
I grew up fishing baitcasters never had an issue. Stopped fishing for 20 years and started again and can't get the hang of it to save my life. Backlash after backlash.
The juice to subscriber ratio on this channel is insane. Thanks boss
:) ... Thanks boss!
Thanks Boss!!! No one Ever Really Explained the Baitcaster like You!!! Much Better now!!!
AWESOME!

Right on bother. Love hearing how everyone does it.

Right on.. Thanks Lowlife! I love me some spinning reels
I try and keep my thumb close enough to feel the nesting begin so I can slow it down a hair.

I find with my cheap baitcaster I need to adjust the tension knob occasionally.
@@LostInTackle What reel do you have?
@Triple $35 kastking, $12 blackfriday right retrieve something, Abu Garcia Max Ultra, and Shimano SLX.

Right.. when you get your hands on a nice baitcaster... gamechanger
I have a bait caster and I really like it. I need a better one to help with backlash. The Walmart brand is ok but not great.
yeah.. I just had a Curado K Gifted to me... it is incredibly noticeable.

I will take full responsibility :)
Can you please do a video about what you think of the ascend fs10 and ascend fs10 vs the ascend 10t.
I wish I had a dealer close to me that would lend them out. Maybe someday

On my STX I only use brake when casting into wind. The new reel I have, Curado BFS w/mag brake. Seems quite a different animal.
Right on!
