Welcome back to Hourless Life, where we are overlanding around the world.
In today's video, we take a road we should never have been on. Eric made a HUGE mistake and left Google Maps with a filter to avoid toll roads. As a result, we had a pretty awesome yet unexpected driving adventure overlanding from the Mindo Valley to Cotacachi, Ecuador.
We take you with us to the Otavalo market, the largest and most epic artesian market we've ever been to. The entire center of the city of Otavalo is turned into one giant mercado. You aren't going to believe the scale of this event.
From there, we head up the road to Lago San Pablo and end up staying at the most luxurious overland campsite we've ever been to: Cabañas del Lago. Wait until you see this place!
We hope you enjoy this journey with us and we're here for the questions. We do our very best to respond to each and every comment here on UA-cam, so hit us up. We'd love to hear from you.

Wow That road was gorgeous but yikes, the edge was some kind of scary. The market was amazing. Good job Eric, thanks for letting us travel with y’all. Can’t wait for your next video.

Debi! So glad you enjoyed this one so much. The scope of that market is not given justice in this video. It is so huge, literally as far as the eye can see. Next video will be on our trip to the center of the world. Then the Galapagos! Ecuador was incredible! ~ Eric

Glad you enjoyed it Art. Caspian totally called me out after that road. I had to leave it in the video. He's so hardcore. ~ Eric

I loved Caspian's remark of "how is it sketchy (what Eric says about the road) when we are overloading? Ha! I Loved seeing the wonderful areas you stay, the food, the boat ride, and the musicians.

Thanks so much sandra. Brittany never gives herself enough credit for her Spanish. She's really good. I mean she knows she can be conversant now, but she's even better than she realizes. I love watching her talk to locals. ~ Eric

It really is, I loved Ecuador. So far my second favorite country to explore after Mexico on this journey so far. Granted the Galapagos had a lot to do with that. That video I think is two videos away still! Next is the center of the world. ~ Eric

Hey Christopher! So glad you enjoyed it. The Otavalo Market is really next level. But wait... there's more. We have another video dropping this afternoon. This one is on the Equator! A lot of our Patreon members are saying it is our best video yet. Hope you enjoy it. ~ Eric

Happy birthday, Eric!! I enjoyed the video and passed it along to overlanding friends who are travelling with their 2 yr old. They might enjoy some alone time while their child has fun with the staff of the hotel.
I’m excited about getting back to our van after our visit back home to Canada
    Thanks for that.

Hey mortlowe, thanks so much! Oh just wait until you see when we get to the Peru videos. Brittany's outta control. We actually drive on what is considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world, a road they say makes the Bolivian death road looks like child's play. We're still quite a few videos from that, but my goodness. I think my heart is still racing. ~ Eric

They are the Rigid Industries side by side dual pod mounting brackets. I'm not sure of the model number. But if you contact rigid and show them a photo of our setup, they'll definitely know. ~ Eric

Awesome video guys. Curious why the restaurant asked for passport numbers?

    • @HourlessLife

Great question. So it has to do with a thing called a Factura. It is a receipt and documentation of sorts for Ecuadorian tax purposes. Businesses are supposedly obligated to do it for any purchase over $30 USD. However it is inconsistent at best. It is just as much for the business as it is for the consumer from my understanding. It doesn’t really apply to us as non-residents. But since it applies to them and the livelihood of the business who is trying to do the right thing, if our purchase is over 30 dollars then we’d comply and offer it. Many businesses will ask you if you want a factura if it is under 30 dollars and we would just say no. They are fine with that as it isn’t a requirement for them, but often the locals want it document for themselves as consumers for their taxes. Hope that makes sense. Great question!
