So, so beautiful! I've only recently discovered the James Galway rose at a museum in Northwest Arkansas. I asked where they got it so I could buy some for myself. Now, I've just received two rose bushes from David Austin, and am excited to see some blooms. I'm just obsessed with this rose!
If I have space for only one climber which one would you recommend based on repeat bloom from spring to frost . I want to have at least one which will be constantly blooming and not take a big break .
Spirit of freedom is the one I will pick because of its ability to bloom continously from spring till frost. No other climber has better repeat than her.
I'm curious to know how your James Galway is doing this year. Please share once he gets blooming. Also what do you feed him and how is his disease resistance? Thank you! I'm in zone 6 so I imagine he would take longer to get that size but WOW!
My JG has climb all the way to the top and the other side of the gazebo. My problem now is all the bloom are on the top and i can't really see them now. 🤣🤣🤣 I might need to do something different next year with pruning so I can see all the bloom from bottom to top. Will do the video and talk about it soon!

I actually love both. James Galway definitely bloom more this year summer when it is getting more mature in 3rd year. And it is soooo healthy regardless of all the crazy daily rain in my area. I will definitely grow both of them in my garden.
@@7eather Thanks for asking. It's the 3rd year, finally it has many flowers!!! And each bloom is so beautiful with medium fragrance. I am very happy. I almost wanted to give up on it. The first two years it didn't perform well.
This rose is very cold hardy to zone 4. It should have no problem dealing with cold and snow. It does shed all leaves in winter. Best time to plant for cold zone should be early spring
@@backyardparadise2334 You are so lucky to be able to have this color in your planting zone, right in your beautiful garden. Lavender colored rose is my favorite color but it's too bad that it's not for my MN zone 4. Sad😔
I planted this in a big tub last year and whilst there are definitely more blooms this year, they all seem to be on very 'floppy' stems, ie not thick stems, meaning the flowers droop which then doesn't display them to their best advantage. Any ideas/thoughts?
I will remove the floppy stems and only keep the thick stems. This way, it will send more energy to grow thicker stem instead of wasting energy on those floppy stem.
Such a beautiful rose. I saw this at the garden centre today and loved its flowers. I checked out David Austen website and it says it’s a climber but have seen elsewhere that it can be grown as a tall shrub. I have no more room for climbers but would love this rose. What do you think? Also do you think I could grow it in a very large container, say 2ft x 2ft x2ft?
I grow many of my climber in pot and they are blooming are growing just fine. I tried to grow this rose as shrub in my warm climate area with no success. If you are in an area without long, Hot summer, you can probably try that. Just doesn't work for me as shrub.

My James Galway only bloom very little the first year, a lot more in second year and explosion in third year. If you go to my channel Playlist under rose care, I have a video about my fertilizing routine and the type of fertilizer I used. I think you can find the same type of fertilizer in UK as well. 🥰

It is doing very well. The first few year I do not good repeats. But the repeats are getting better after year 3. 😊 Bloom still last a long time even under the heat

Would the James rose grow best against a brick chimney or grow against a four and a half foot chain link metal fence?
You will want to train it against something solid coz this rose grow really tall and with thick canes

You probably won't see many blooms this year but it will start blooms a lot next year spring and exploded in the 3rd year spring

Hi! What is your gardening zone? I'm curious if this rose will do well in my 6b. I got mixed reviews with zones 5-6.
I am in zone 8b. But it should do well for zone 6b coz it is hardy to zone 4.

I don't really prune them since it is growing as climber. Just prune down the old, dead or disease cane and prune to shape.

I bought mine from K and M roses. You can definitely plant it in the pot. But make sure the pot is big enough and provide a structure for it to climb.
