Mary Jane and Peter were married for 20 years. Their relationship also led to their characters growing with mj finally overcoming her fear of commitment because of Peter and being his “lightning rod” and with Peter overcoming his reluctance to move on from Gwen’s death and being able to put aside the mask and love peter’s life Tha ks to mj. Peter and black cat just don’t work together mostly because of their conflicting life choices. Jed McKay did a a great job growing her character and also had her move on from that relationship and accepting the friendship between her Peter and mj. Only for wells and nick Lowe to throw all that aside for no reason. Those are some of the reasons why I think Peter and mj are like Lois and Clark and why I’m so tired and frustrated with the direction of these characters.
I feel like miles is his own hero and now Peter needs a new sidekick. Like batman and nightwing, even though they are inextricably linked, they don’t always need to be a team, like how batman got Jason, then Tim, and now Damien after each of them grow up and become their own hero
I don't think the MCU could handle Black Cat's spice. Love her for the comics but I think Gwen is the way to go for that Peter. It'll either be really weird or amazing when Spiderverse Miles inevitably crosses over into the MCU, but then you have two Gwens talking about how different their lives are and I'm kind of into that
It's weird writers don't know what to do with MJ when her solo run from 2021 was probably the coziest little book I read that year and it was just her running into shenanigans as an actress and using her quick wit and charm to work it out
Kinda wish they only did #1 for completely New books complete universe resets and to mark new long term writers starting points on their runs only reverting back to legacy numbers as a split count for big anniversary issues
So Benny mentioned before that part of the reason Spidey’s personality is that the writers are writing their version of Spidey. The thing is though, Marvel comics is more of a straight line of storytelling while being interconnected. To the point, you even mention other material you need to read to understand some of the story. So to an end, I do think that if you’re writing Spidey, you should have read all the material concerning him. So THAT said we have a caveat, One More Day more or less resets his history to an extent. I know they said everything happened minus the wedding, but in all his character has to be different because he’s not that same Peter anymore. There should be consistency between the Peter’s at bare minimum from OMD to present. That’s like the lightest amount of reading by comparison, and if they can’t bother to do that, for editorial to agree on a 616-Peter to write, even after the guidelines they’ve placed for his portrayal in media, then idk, we’re just going to continue getting mediocre stories. All that said, right now my favorite version of Spidey is the game, and I’m hoping the sequel will do it justice.
Agreed, the thing about saying that 'everyone has their own version of Spidey' is that it can very easily be an excuse for dog crap writing or extremely OOC characters because either the writer hasn't read a Spider-man comic in decades or has never read one and is drawing on their memories of a cartoon or movie combined with pop culture osmosis.
Here’s how I would fix the Spider-Man/MJ problem 😂 Deadpool says he’s had enough of this weird S*** in the Zeb Wells run, he goes back in time to the one more day story uses some future technology to save Aunt May and and kicks Mephisto in the nuts and tells Peter to never leave MJ again. We get a whole new starting point where Spider-Man is now a husband and father and continue from there. There you go Marvel I fixed your biggest mistake 😂
Spidey without MJ really doesn't feel like Spidey to me... I've read all the issues up until OMD(and I liked Gwen but not as much as MJ)... Since then it really needs to spike my interest to even make me bother google Spidey... and besides I don't understand the "needs to be like the movies" in Toby trilogy he was with MJ, in Andrew duology he was with Gwen, in Tom trilogy he was with alternate MJ... how the hell do Marvels writers not understand that most people like seeing Spidey with MJ.
25:25 Dan… Peter was married to MJ for over 20 years. Gwen was dead for over 30. In the early 2000s, most people in the cultural zeitgeist associate Peter with MJ cuz of the Raimi films in the same way Superman is with Lois. That argument doesn’t make much sense.
Yo Benny do you think people should really hate on the New 52 as much as they do? Or does it lowkey deserve alot more praise and love? The new52 honestly is what brought me back into comics in like 2014, before i stopped buying them again in 2016 (just recently got back into comics in 2022) I feel like for awhile the New52 was so disliked by everyone that I knew but then little by little the hatred started to turn towards the whole Rebirth thing and everyone kinda started to praise the New 52 a lot more.
Rebirth was the best thing that ever happened to dc at that time. New 52 brought me in as well but it definitely ruined dc for a little while. New 52 literally was just them with no plan that’s why it started out really rocky and only leveled out by time rebirth happened
14:56 Comics have always been used to shape society's way of thinking, whether it's propaganda for war etc. it's absolutely wrong in my opinion to suggest that woke just came about by the evolution of society, comics and movies are used by think tanks who work for the 1% to dived and control societies, Comics and movies are the biggest pushers of woke since it's creation into society, again society did not evolve into woke ideology neither cancel culture, critical theory or race theory. It's called culture creation! The template they used is from the pages of Plato's Republic and other sources. We can go down the rabbit hole of the CIA or the Military involvement in this. I love comics but I will call it when It needs to be called out!
Man, I just can’t agree with Benny’s take on what is and isn’t out of character for Peter. I’m still putting my thoughts together about why it bothers me, but it feels like such a copout. It doesn’t work for me. You can’t say this is all one continuous narrative, and then handwave away a lack of consistent characterization. It’s such a weird allowance we only really make for American comic books. In any other literary context, we’d just call that for what it is. Bad writing.
Reddit spider boy posts are the only good thing to be made with that character, other than those he’s a waste of a space in marvel which just means no one will use him thankfully sorry slott
I mean Peter from slott to spencer was mostly the same guy, wells doesn’t act like either of those. Idk why you keep bringing up “it’s the writers version” that’s not a real thing most writers have to make a coherent vision to the rest of the history and world. Peter doesn’t even act like when he was in the beyond arc. Just a shitty excuse
Mj and Peter relationship was perfect in the JMS run.. wasn't a damsel in distress but wasn't an unnatural involvement either it was great
A Spidey show without Sal? Blasphemy
The recent spider boy convo on absolute comics was killing me with sals real-time reaction to the memes
Right! Haha he probably didn't want to do it tho. You can tell the guy is so whelmwd over recent Spiderman.
yea it def feels like I'm cheating somehow....
HERESY
Spider-Man PS4 before the face change, it had the best version of Peter AND miles
I like the parker industries story too. It's the perfect progression for Peter Parker
Same here.

Agreed, I really like that series.
Chip did Spectacular Spider-Man and it was great!
Best spider man run since the end of superior.
I Honestly Think Spider-Boy has good potential for meta commentaries .I even wrote out a whole mini series outline for it
Kinda wish they only did #1 for completely New books complete universe resets and to mark new long term writers starting points on their runs only reverting back to legacy numbers as a split count for big anniversary issues
"that's awkward"
"No it's not, leave it alone. My wife watches this"

Feels bad for Benny for the crickets there
Don't worry I laughed

100% people just like to say oh it’s just the writers version of Peter when it’s a shitty story. Really sucks when the main book is shitty fan fiction

You guys should do this more often this was hilarious and awesome 👌
I think zdarsky also did a run on spectacular Spider-Man? I remember something about sandman dying
I remember mayday met a evil spiderman on an evil fantastic four
I actually liked spidey with kitty pride just another love interest but him and black cat is great too
Some people who don't like how dated the early 2000's comics were REALLY AREN'T gonna like looking back on the 2020's era of comics
Great comics experiment on Spider-Man questions guys tons of fun.
You guys make this 46 year old feel 20, without drugs!?!
Keep going brother's! 👍🏻😎

"You're my new pepper" Tony Stark
I wanna see Alistair Smythe and a bunch of Spider Slayers. That would be awesome!
Andy looks like benny but sounds like dan. And it always confuses me when I listen to the podcast 🤣🤣🤣

Great episode! Video volume seemed really low compared to normal videos though
The Dandy Force Unleashed!
Sony owns the Spider villain movie rights, the deal doesn't fully allow for the mcu to do a real spider trilogy.
Is it just me or the audio a little quiet
Wow so that banter up front is so rough
What if Spiderboy is the mutant verison of spider man
It's Nightcrawler.
I'd much rather see Black Cat than Gwen Stacy.
Yeeeeessss I luv dis show
Spiderman kills the marvel universe. Marvel writers, go go go!
Spider-boy? Where Sasuke boy at?
comicstorian >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the other two guys or whatever

I couldn’t go past two issues of non stop. Having zemo use the vocabulary of a 14 yo really took me out of it
👍
