  • On Canadian Radio, Jian Ghomeshi talked to WSJ reporter Vauhini Vara about the unexpected subculture of "Bronies" - guys who are sincerely obsessed with the TV show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
This thriving subculture of tech-savvy guys in their teens, 20s and 30s includes numerous online communities and websites; local get-togethers and conventions, and even Pony fan art and music.

I'm willing to argue that most Bronies aren't cloppers from what I've seen. Of course there ARE going to be some who are, but that's likely with any fandom. Especially with one as large as the Brony fandom.

It's sad really. I have lived in the Rocky Mountains all my life and I see the disparity between the rural farmers who work their asses of each and every day and today's youth who were born with a silver spoon in their mouths. I live in a small but fairly rich community surrounded by farming land and few kids have worked on these farms or even work. My parents taught me a good work ethic when I was young though. I adore this nation and what it stood/stands for but it has fallen from glory.

The percentage of cloppers to non-cloppers in the brony fandom is probably the same as it is in other fandoms, but as the brony fandom is so insanely productive that the amount of sexually charged artwork will make it seem like we're all cloppers.

What is it with people criticising reporters (not journalists in this case) for using certain words correctly?
I could understand criticising reporters and journalists for bad grammar or language use, but this? Why?

Every Canadian is trained in Hockey-fu. And if that fails, we keep a Newfoundlander handy to stun the invader with confusion long enough for us to sick our attack caribou on them. By that point the invader is well subdued and we offer them a beer while we wait for the Mounties to arrive, eh.

that's why I love living in Canada. If an American program does a segment on Bronies, they liken us to mentally disabled man-children who are leaching off society. But a Canadian program like this one will actually do research, interview people involved, and give us props. Bronies display "neo-sincerity", eh? I like the sound of that.

they have flaws like applejack: she often lets her pride get in her way of accepting help from friends
Rarity: she has a trouble making time for friends with her scedual and often makes the mistake of puting busniess first. not to mention she has moments of lust and greed with or without discords help
twilight: she has trouble being herself with her friends as she's never really had any
pinkiepie: has a need to party but is very insecure about herself
I'd say more but youtube character limit

Funny how media reports on Bronies always refer to Neighslayer immediately when talking about brony music, like they're huge in the fandom (FYI, they aren't actually that big), and fail to mention Glaze, Forest Rain, Alex S, Odyssey Eurobeat, MicTheMicrophone, Cyril, AJtheEngineer, BeatleBronies, AcousticBrony, Mandopony, etc, all of whom are hugely popular in the fandom. Just a funny thing I noticed.

Ah, but here's the trick. When the drunk Texas ex-Marines come up here, we'll offer them a beer. One sip of Canadian beer and they'll be too drunk to move. Give them some poutine, turn the hockey game on, and by the time that the American police show up to pick up their boys, they'll all be in recliners wearing hockey jerseys and saying "No doot a'boot it, eh"
Canada: the Good -Guy-Greg of the United Nations. On a side note, we're all very sorry for Justin Bieber.

I guess that sums up the general rise of popularity of MLP. It's pretty much the most watchable show these days. Hell even the anime got slack these days. IMHO I think that show has huge potential only to be held back by Hasbro's interests and it's orientation to their initial target audience and franchise reputation as girl stuff.

  • @telemarker93

Of course not. Equating a nation of 300 million people that come from diverse backgrounds, cultures, values systems, religions, and world views to one news show is both immensely erroneous in nature and I don't think many people would have the audacity to do so. However, be it from when I was spending a great deal of time in Ecuador or doing my exchange in Germany, there were no news outlets like Fox to be found. They just didn't exist because the public refused to belief that stupidity.

Would you expect a girl or woman to not like Star Wars simply because it's aimed at young boys? Because let me tell you, there are PLENTY of female Star Wars fans out there, enough that there's even a girl's clothing line for them. And adult men happen to like a show about ponies which have great characterizations and interesting and funny plots, not to mention the awesome pop-culture references.
