My 3 year old Eastern Hermann’s gets some extra ‘enrichment’ when he’s having a soak - I put your videos on my iPad near his little tub & we watch you together 😂 It really looks likes he’s paying attention, he just sits there chilling & watching the screen! Thanks for another excellent video - I get all my tortoise info from you 👍

Sunday, my fav day of the week because of your videos! 💕
I have a room dedicated to my pets, including my Russian tortoise. I sit with her for an hour or two everyday on the floor and let her explore the room. I put little hideouts for her all over. I also bought this cute small animal collapsible tunnel for her. She loves it, and will explore that too. She also loves her pets. The other night she sat for 20 mins while I rubbed her shell and her legs. 😛
You gave me some more great ideas with this video too! I currently have play sand out for my hermit crab tank, so I put some in a shallow dish and my tortoise has already crawled all through it. I'm going to add it to her enclosure. I love the "rain" idea too. I have a bottle that sprays a fine mist, and will start using that on her in her enclosure. 🌧️
I've been saving up money for the past year, and am going to build her an outdoor enclosure for this spring/summer. I will have to check out your other videos so I can figure out how to get started.👷‍♀️
Thank you for all you do for our not so furry friends!❤

I have an Eastern Box turtle and due to the small size of my apartment can't give him a big wonderful enclosure. However, I've always noticed how he explores the worktable I put him on when I feed him. So for his enrichment I give him time to explore my crafting supplies (yes making sure it's safe) or put him on my bed where he gets great fun out of exploring the bedding - digging under it! And when I feed him I also give food to him at various levels because he seems to like the feeling of stretching his neck to take a bite! So this video was so right on about turtles needing enrichment. Oh, I can't give him a plant but occasionally I but safe items in his box for him to look at, sniff at and nudge.

You might want to contact the growers of plants you buy in retail stores like Lowe's. Sometimes they use systemic insecticides. It can take 6 to 8 weeks for that type of chemical to clear the plant tissue. I would ask the grower
(the tag is hopefully on or in the pot)! If you buy from an actual nursery, they should know the history of the plant material.

I can’t find organic plants approved for them and if I buy a non organic and have to wait 6 months that’s a long time. Glad to know I can buy a non organic and rinse it.

Congrats on your baby! I have a Russie too, and I adore her!!!
Be careful to get yours plenty of fiber (I have to moisten and cut up Timothy hay and wrap it in spring mix lettuces and hand feed) too! And keep fruits and veggies to a minimum and avoid things like spinach and broccoli but as a rare and minimal treat as they can cause kidney stones!
P.S. for the hay, I use Oxbow, giving her only the softer, grassy pieces and avoid the stiff, more straw-like pieces.

    • @LanaDiPati
      @LanaDiPati Рік тому

@@saga2964 Yup, that's right. Carrots, regular lettuce, and other vegetables are not appropriate for Russian tortoises. They feed mainly on grasses and meadow green plants. They are not naturally capable of digesting sugars.

    • @amypetersen1668
      @amypetersen1668 Рік тому

We have a Russian and love him! Don’t give him carrot too often (I only give a little a few times a year) as the sugars are hard for them to digest. Safe greens (lettuces, endive, radicchio) and especially now that’s it’s spring, lots of dandelions, clover, wild plantain and violets from our lawn are what he chows down on- he loves it when his “summer diet” arrives, lol

Our hermann tortoise loves exploring. We set up things in the hall way for him to check out each morning. He “runs” up and down the hall way over and over going thru boxes or whatever else we put out there that day. We hide things in the boxes like food or cuttle bone and have large holes cut in them so he can go in and out. We’ve only had him 5 days but he seems to know the routine already because he comes right up to us now in the mornings. He knows it’s time to play.

My baby Eastern Hermann's (born on July 27th '24) has white clover, red clover, a Boston fern, carpet of blue forget me nots, carex grass, mint, lambs lettuce and a trailing flower, campula I think it's called, logs, flower pot hide, basking slate, "dinner plate" slate, some little smooth river pebbles and lots of light and fluffy substrate mixed with coir, and it's misted with a spray bottle to create a little humidity.
She has a warm soak every morning and a pinch of calcium powder on her dandelion leaves and romain lettuce.
    She loves it.
I have seen alot of conflicting advice on what is safe to eat daily vs sparingly.
Right now she just has Romain lettuce and dandelion leaves, seems a bit like I'm doing it wrong.
    She nibbles the fern sometimes.
She didn't eat the watercress or cucumber slice I gave her, or the grated carrot.
    Nice video.

Cool, but.... The best way to keep any and all turtles and tortoises happy is to feed them real yummy food and give them loving and kisses ( But always give them what they need for healthy shells and skin and bones ). I know how the kisses thing sounds but trust me, and try prove me wrong, they will return love in their own little way. They love to cuddle and snuggle, and if your loving enough they love kisses and they return it.

Off topic, but can you go over the north aner😢tortoises? Example habitats, protection, diets, habits, and why they aren’t in the pet trade. Seeing Iris was a bit of a shock to be honest.

I took 4 red building bricks with holes in them, stood them vertically and cemented together leaving a hole at the top in the middle of the bricks, filled the holes and the middle with soil and planted in the holes and in the middle of the bricks with weeds that are leaf heavy

I have three Easter x three toed box turtles that go through a lot of cuttlebone. Is it possible for them to have too much . Their diet is pretty varied. I mix box turtle pellets with gourmet aquatic turtle food and they are fed dubia roaches . I also feed every other day . I have keep and breed a few different species of snake and lizards but turtles are fairly new to me

      Hey Bryon,
I would cut back if they’re constantly eating it. Maybe offer once a month and that’s it.

Can you do a care video on indian stars? Maybe covering them from hatchlings to adults? There's not much around on the internet about it, which is surprising in 2023.

I know you also care for aquatic and land turtles. Do you think you could make a video on feeding enrichment for them? I have two yellow-bellied sliders, and I feel like there's more I should be doing to give them their best lives

Hi! Great video! We can already tick off your enrichment technques :) as we use all of them, but we are not able to plant anything so that it survives for longer than a day :P What live plant would you suggest for a Russian tortoise? Aloe and other succulents go bye bye in a second :P

Btw, we once put a new branch in the enclosure and our Ori (after waking up) was like: Hey, it wasn't here! and he tried to get rid off it, by pushing it to the wall and trying to lift it out and outside xD

Great work Lana! Dracanea is a great plant that should survive no problem in there at least for several months.

Currently growing some flowers indoors, for my 2 year old Russian. Very rarely I'll see him go for the bone although he does get calcium when needed.

I am going to grow cress for my hermans tortoise and plant it in his enclosure.
I also put some of his food on his rocks and in a ball that rolls away as he is taking bites from it.
He was a rescue, and I really struggle to get him to eat cuttle fish or calcuim powder, so I'm not sure how to help any advice is appreciated. 😁

Great work Brooke! Just keep offering the cuttlebone, they all eventually start to nibble at it.

Can you do a survey of which species thrive in groups and which prefer to be housed alone? 🤔🤔🤔
