I just tried using concentrated bleach to remove black mold that is on 150-200 knotty pine boards. In two weeks I sprayed both sides of the 8' boards over a dozen times. I also left them out in the hot summer sun to dry out and allow the UV light to help kill the mold. After two weeks I am surprised that the boards still had=ve mold and am not impressed with the results. I am now resorting to using white vinegar and baking soda. I agree that bleach doesn't work like I thought it would.

You went the extra miles to investigate whether colorox kills black mold. That is commendable. But your materials did not convince me. The takeaway from your materials: to eradicate mold, you need to get rid of the damp source. In your other video, you recommended using vinegar, borax + water. You can easily reach the same conclusion as you did with colorox - i.e, they don't kill black mold. For the exact same reason!

    Thank you for investigating.
But you lost me on the first example, from the EPA. They said, "biocides are substances that can destroy living organisms. The use of a chemical or biocide that kills organisms such as mold (chlorine bleach, for example) ... " Right there they confirmed it: bleach kills mold.
They never said, "don't use bleach." They never said, "chlorine bleach doesn't kill mold." They only warned against using it as a "routine practice" and provided some vague reasoning as to why.
Oregon State EDU never said, "bleach doesn't kill mold.'" They said exactly the opposite: "Water and bleach washes tended to reduce surface discoloration by 40 to 50 percent (Fig. 1), but obviously, they did not kill all the spores on the wood surface; ..." They go on to say, "... some of the fungi survive the treatment ... " Which means, some of the fungi did not survive the treatment, which means: bleach kills mold. The keywords here are "some" and "all."
Finally, ignoring the data submitted to the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology simply because Clorox funded the study is a logical fallacy called Ad hominem. Perhaps we can pay to see the research, or perhaps a public library has access to the journal. Then we can better evaluate the methods used.
The assertation you've made is that "bleach doesn't kill mold." In that alone, all three authorities you've cited disagree with your assertation.
Perhaps the better assertation is "bleach may not kill 100% of all mold on or in a surface, and does not prevent it from returning."

You said in the first video that bleach "does not kill mold, that is a myth" It sates right there "The use of a biocide that kills organisms such as mold(clorine bleach for example)"
So it seems that they DO believe that bleach kills mold. Correct? The other study also states that bleach kills mold. It also states that it is very difficult to kill all mold spores on a surface regardless of what you use on it. If conditions are right the mold will come back. I think to overall point is that if the conditions for mold to grow exist it will grow no matter how many times you kill it.

I noticed that too, the wording does seem to say that Chlorine Bleach 'kills organisms such as mold' or at least that it admits that Chlorine Bleach is a common solution to killing mold (whether rightly so or not). Half tempted to buy some petri dishes and figure this out for myself, but I suppose I should finish the video first.

Thx for the clarification via the studies qouted. I studied this issue as part of home inspection license requirements for continuing education. Other points made during the course were; any material that had previously been alive will eventually be consumed by fungi with the right moisture &temp conditions. E.g. wood/paper, leather, cotton, wool, linen, silk, etc., & without fungi bacterial diseases could be spread long after death, & decimate the world's population.

    LookMold,
I appreciate your info and honesty. I'm wondering about removal of black mold from a vintage automobile that's sitting outside in a damp Florida environment. I'm not concerned about damaging the paint, that isn't an issue, only the removal of the mold before the vehicle is brought inside the shop? Any ideas? I do have a pressure washer and a sprayer.

As far the exterior goes, it should come right off with traditional detergent. I'm not really sure if thats safe to put on the car though. Start with car washing soap and see what happens

Thank you for clarifying. I have heard many people say to use bleach, but I had also researched that bleach doesn't actually kill mold, so I'd been very confused about this whole issue. Thank for uncovering to myth.

Others have made the point that bleach killing mold is distinct from it being the best resolution to a mold infestation/colony. But there is perhaps a further point: that mold is often going to be growing in some spilled food or dirt and the bleach may help to break that down and remove it. I've also read that bleach can break down certain of the mould toxins (which makes sense if they are proteins) and this is again different from killing the organism, or resolving the infestation. Some colonies I'm sure bleach doesn't work at all on - bathroom sealant being an obvious one. And to prevent regrowth in the long run yes the moisture absolutely has to be removed, and with the toxic mold it will be best to remove the material it's grown on also. I would say to always use several cleaning methods in succession, as we most often won't know the exact moulds and toxins, and there's nothing to lose by doing so (except that we mustn't mix bleach with other cleaning products).

From my experience. Bleach is only a temporary solution. I scrub my shower with toilet bleach (the strong stuff) and it's nice and clean but it grows back fast so the video explains a lot actually.

Killing mold, and removing mold stains are two different things. Bleach is good for removing mold stains because it turns everything white, but doesn't always kill all the mold spores especially in porous surfaces.

hey thanks for the comment and even more, thanks for your service! It's funny you ask that because I had a vet tell me just a few weeks ago how he had dealt with serious mold issues on bases which surprised me. It all depends what the cause is and what type of building material is damaged. It may require the building material to be removed and not just cleaned!

Isn’t the reason bleach doesn’t kill mold is because of the concentration? If there is too much bleach not diluted properly with water the mold spores close up to protect themselves? Is this accurate or not? Thanks!

All these studies say is : it will not "completely" remove mold. But I'm happy with the results nevertheless. The Bleach has other effects that compound to it's use. So I take it as a blanket solution to keep things under control. But the mold returns, (in about 2/3 weeks thats true).

The EPA is for protecting the environment, not fighting fungi, virii, and bacteria. This is why the CDC recommends bleach. Please STOP with the fucking misinformation. There's already enough everywhere you look around you. My guess, you probably are sponsored by some of these garbage chemical companies. You don't even seem to understand most of what you read and presented in the video. How fucked is this...................... Stop spreading false information.
