LMS 'Black 5' 4-6-0s Nos. 44871 & 45407 'The Lancashire Fusilier' were rostered to work the first two days of the RYTC's "Great Britain XVI" excursion; this is an annual itinerary which, with steam haulage, tours England, Scotland and Wales over a 9-day period. Day 2 saw the "Great Britain" booked to run from Cheltenham Spa to Lancaster, and this leg of the trip would involve the double-headed 'Black 5s' taking on the 1 in 37 Lickey Incline - a sight not to be missed!
Steam up the Lickey during morning hours is a rare occurrence, and, with a clear and sunny forecast, meant that it was imperative to get there in good time. I therefore arrived at Vigo Bridge shortly after 8:00am, just managing to secure a position amongst the crowd of enthusiasts already present. Although there was the usual risk of a unit going down the bank simultaneously, the steam excursion departed from Cheltenham Spa 3 minutes late, and thus would ensure a clear view of both 'Black 5's tackling the gradient.
Sure enough, the "Great Britain XVI" passed Bromsgrove at 9:31am, and, with plenty of noise and exhaust, 44871 & 45407 are seen pounding up the 1 in 37 gradient past Vigo Bridge, charging onwards towards the summit at Blackwell.

Great shot of them on this famous climb, Adam, many thanks for sharing this. The weather was spot on and the Spring feel to the video is lovely. I've never filmed on the Lickey - maybe one day! Many thanks, David.

Thank you kindly for your feedback David, I'm glad you enjoyed my perspective of the climb. I'm definitely in agreement with regards to weather conditions and I'm pleased I could achieve the Spring atmosphere too. The Lickey is a great location for steam charters, though getting there early is often key to securing a position - several of those present had been at Vigo since 5-6am!
      Kind regards,
      Adam 🙂

Thank you kindly John, I'm glad I could achieve this shot - the low-level positioning worked quite nicely, I'd say.
      Kind regards,
      Adam 🙂

Great catch, of a great sight and sound!
Seen pictures of the crowds there, so you did well to get a good spot. Subscribed to you too, Phil 👍😁

Thanks for watching Phil, I'm glad you enjoyed my brief coverage of the GB tour. Aye, I was indeed very lucky to secure this spot - two other photographers kindly allowed me to position between them, so it worked out in the end. Thank you kindly for subscribing too, greatly appreciated! 👍😁
      Kind regards,
      Adam 🙂

Thank you kindly for watching Dan, I'm pleased I was able to cover the 'GB XVI'; this was the first time I'd seen one of RYTC's 'Great Britain' trips. The Black 5s gave a cracking show up the 1 in 37 gradient, the 47's assistance from the rear didn't seem to detract too much. I'm very happy with the effectiveness of the low-level angle I utilised too.
      Kind regards,
      Adam 🙂

Great Video I think you were positioned just in front of me.

Thank you kindly for that James, I was fortunate to have secured this position given the crowd - I'm glad the low-level shot worked as well as it did. For reference, I was positioned halfway along the metal gate, with my phone camera mounted on tripod the other side - I only wondered as your video looks like it was filmed slightly closer to the foot crossing itself?
      Kind regards,
      Adam 🙂

Very nice indeed, if only they would have let the fives do the work though, definately great to see the pair again on the GB tour, even if only because they are not on the Jacobite, cheers . 👍🌝

Thank you most kindly Stephen, I'm pleased I was finally able to film one of the GB tours - I'd class the pairing of Ian Riley's 'Black 5's being an added bonus too! Aye, it'd have been great if they'd been given a chance to tackle the bank unassisted, but I'd say the pair still gave a decent show, in spite of the 47 assisting from the rear.
      Kind regards,
      Adam 🙂
P.S. I do apologise for the delay in replying, not up to my usual standards!
