  • Took advantage of a lovely sunny Oregon Fall day today and jumped on the Commando. What a great ride. Nothing too crazy, just enjoying the fresh air and the feel and the sound of the bike. It’s a lot quieter now that I’ve tightened up the exhaust nuts. A really enjoyable ride around the local country lanes. I love this bike!

    One of the nicest riding videos I have seen. A Beautiful motorcycle, lovely roads, and well shot with great sound. Plus, and to me this is huge...you ride like you belong on a bike in a world where so many who shoot riding videos don't. Really engaging. Thank you!

    Thanks for ride down memory lane. Mine was a '74 bought for $1500 new in 1975 from Donelson Cycles in St. Louis, MO. I was living in Edwardsville, IL and all the HD and Kawasaki riders wanted to race me and I obliged by smoking all of them, until Butch Pace brought out the nitro burning wheely-bar pro drag bikes. I lived down the street from his popular dealership and race shop, and he actually stopped by my house and asked me to please stop telling his customers my bike was a 650. It was bad for Kawasaki 900 and 1000 morale to get beat by a skinny British twin. I've owned many great bikes over the years, but that '74 kicker Norton was one of my favorites. Thanks again.

    Nice video - love the Commando sound; I had one briefly some years ago and it has since gone on to a friend who takes loving care of it and rides it quite often - unfortunately, I live in a part of the country where the highways are all Harley-cruiser type boring roads - if I could ride country lanes again I'd have a nice road bike tomorrow.

    Thank you, brought back some great memories. Really wonderful bike the Norton Commando. I had a Fastback and then a Roadster, both 750cc. Neither ever let me down and super smooth with the isolastic frame. The Fastback was very quick indeed with 2S camshaft. Wish I had them now, I've owned many bikes since, but they were definitely the best machines I've ever owned. Nortons are too expensive for me to buy now sadly. Maybe one day.

    Awesome video mate, I spent much of my youth on Norton’s. I haven’t been on one for awhile but the memories are indelible etched in my memory banks.
    Thanks for uploading mate.🏍

    This might help to get me through this winter up here in Toronto. My 1970 Norton 750 doesn't like to start under 40 degrees F. You wouldn't want to go too fast at those temperatures anyway but I have done it with this Norton in downtown T.O. about 44 years ago around Cristie Pits. It was 32 F and light snow, very much like today. Stay under 30 m.p.h. and it's not too bad if you stop once in a while and "cup" the cylinders with your gloves.

    One of my favorite bikes, love riding in the fall, only down side wet roads and leaves

      Totally agree Jim. Unfortunately the rain is coming back to Oregon this week so it might be a while until the next ride. Best wishes, Mike

      Spring is better everything is drying out, before it gets too hot and you start getting oil leaks.

    Owned the exact same bike around 1982, $1200.00 What I paid for it,eventually got a fiddly Meriden made triumph bonneville that needed a new head,or new valve guides,unfortunately,I was a enthusiast only,wrenching was impossible at the time.

    Hi Mike , great vids as always !
    Question on what handlebar have you fitted to the mk2 A , want a pair like yours mine are to high .
    Kind regards Greg.

      Hi Greg, I think these were called the “euro“ bars. I’m sorry but I can’t remember where I got them from. I thought I got them from CNW (Colorado Norton Works), but I just looked at the website and they are $116, so I am sure i didn’t spend that much! I seem to remember that they were about $30-$50. Here’s the CNW website in case you want to go for the top of the line bars. coloradonortonworks.net/handlebars-european-clubman-style.html

    You leave the air slides (choke on) closed all the time?????

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  5 років тому

      Hi Lucas, that was a different choke lever to the standard model and I've replaced it now. If you take a closer look, the cable comes in from the bottom and the lever is pulled clockwise, lifting the slide and the choke is then off. Cheers, Mike

    • @lucasVC100
      @lucasVC100 5 років тому +1

      @@TheMightyGarage Ok, I see it now. I was a bit confused. I have a the same Norton as you and also need the choke when it is cold. Most of the Nortons dont need the choke, they told me. Grtz, Lucas

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  5 років тому

      @@lucasVC100 Thanks Lucas. Yes, a lot of the guys in the club don't use their choke or they have blanked them off altogether. Mine needs a little choke when it's cold but then is usually good. I also do forget from time to time to shut it off ;) Best wishes, Mike

    A less fiddly British bike,triumph and bsa,the classic vertical twins with good looks to match, the Norton,with it's rubber mounted engine, not so classic looking.
