I like that Gav was able to almost replicate the same style that bastion gives off. It's got that mysteriously plonky style that is unique to Bastion. and it's the style that made me fall in love with the game, so I'm very pleased with this piece.
miracleofsound I'm not sure if you ever played any of Fallout: New Vegas's DLC, but Calamity fits the "Lonesome Road" DLC perfectly, like scarily so. :D
"Listen, all this takes a lot of getting used to, and you do get used to it, after a while." "There's three things i'll always miss though." "One, not always having to watch my step all the time." "Two... Well forget about two." "And three, i miss the songs." "Folks from Caelondia knew how to carry a tune." "Sure we got some songs on the old gramophone, but trying to imagine how they sounded like, playing to a room full of fine people; unwinding at the sole regret of a hard day's work." "Those were the days...."
Wow. I came across this completely by accident. I don't play video games much and I've never even heard of Bastion, (I was actually trying to find Calamity Song by the Decemberists) but I must say the song is just amazing. Is Miracle of Sound a band?
Actually, it's really cool, there, because it's that, but layered with that is the beginning of the song, as if everything's started over. It's kind of like how the song 'Setting Sail, Coming Home,' references lines Rucks says in both endings.
That's not the only part. "You can't fix a broken heart is a couple of days, so bring it back or start anew." The bit about a broken heart is about Zulf, since the Calamity happened on the night of his Bachelor's Party. Bringing it back or starting anew is pretty obvious, though.
@@luminozero Zulf is not the only one broken hearted here. Everyone is. Zia: betrayed by her Boyfriend which forced her father to start the Calamity. Rucks: can't do anything but watch what he's trying to protect to get destroyed. And the biggest loser: The Kid: mocked by his own people, worked in what is essentially hell to help his sickly mother, returns to find his mother dead and his money missing. Signs up for another tour of duty in hell (which no one signs up for twice), falls in love but then the calamity takes that love away as well. Did the Kid complain? Never.
I like this. Thinking about it, though, that could be a neutral statement. Even if you reset, it's just going to be another calamity--which perhaps implies you shouldn't go that way, but not necessarily. Food for thought.
You know that Gavin is and amazing youtuber for three reasons. One, you never see a negative comment on his videos. Second, everyone refers to him as Gavin, not miracleofsound. Third, every song has amazing and very well suited praise along with it.
You know that's actually true, I have NEVER seen anyone say anything bad about any of his songs, which just maked it even more surprising that he doesn't have more subscribers than he does!
I don't really think it fits into any genre but if you like this song check out early Bjork albums, Sleeping Satellite by Tasmin Archer or Survive by Seal, they were some of the influences for it :)
Zver Zverot Never going to happen. The vague world of bastion is on purpose to have a sense of wonder and mysticalness. It's like visiting an alien world and being given a history lesson and geography lesson, compared to visiting an alien world and be given the chance to explore and discover the wonders of it.

Sometimes I listen to Gav's old stuff and it makes it clear how far he's come as a musician. Then sometimes you stumble across an old straight-up masterpiece, that showcases how clever his lyrics are, and how he can simultaneously channel the soul of his subject while laying his own take on it over the top.
I have to say, this definitely tells it all. ***POTENTIAL SPOILERS*** It really makes me wish there were some kind of media (graphic novel, regular novel, animated featurette) detailing some of their adventures after the 'move on' ending. I mean, seeing the Bastion all covered in sails and everyone just sort of working (Zulf washing dishes was especially poignant for me for some reason) made me think of something out of Miyazaki, particularly Howl's Moving Castle. Wouldn't have to be another game or some grand adventure. Just a slice-of-life style setting of everyone just... living in this new world, and what discoveries they make. I dunno, may just be me. But my decision to 'start anew' at the end of the game, as well as saving a particularly unsavory person, just made me want to see more adventures with the Kid, Zia, Zulf, Rucks, and the various critters they picked up along the way. Aaaaand... now I have to go play it again. >.>
ocarinageek I personally like to think we don't get to know whats out their to allow us to Create our own world in our imagination. I like to believe that The group isnt the only ones still out there and there are plenty of people who Survived the cataclysm and the kid finds them one day whilst hunting and they join and from their the bastion becomes a small town. And eventually a large town. Than a city and its exactly what it was to begin with The bastion humanity needed.
KoJeTsCorner Well, in my head there were already other towns out there. I mean, a large portion of the Ura survived. Who's to know what's beyond the borders of Caelondia? I feel like the Bastion would be little more than a tiny floating speck among what could be out there. It's not large enough for much more than the four living there, plus their little zoo. But with Supergiant's art direction and storytelling, I could just imagine several new colorful towns, with their own stories, morals, and reactions to the Calamity. Which (again) immediately makes me think of Miyazaki. Could be a fun little romp, and then just end with them sailing off again. No need for a "final resolution" or anything. Just more of the group, I guess.
Ever since i heard this song, i had this game on the 'i really should get around to it'-list. I finally did (upon hearing the song again, obviously) and Holy Shit. Not only did it not disappoint, as in, it actually lives up to this song. The song also becomes so much more brilliant when you have the game in your head.
I've had this song stuck in my head for WEEKS now. The exact same thing happened with the song in the game itself of the Singer character... I guess this says two things: 1. Bastion songs are always earworm-quality if they're good. 2. You're as good as the people that made the original soundtrack. Keep it up, MiracleOfSound!
This one is my new favorite of yours. Another example of how your music perfectly captures the very vibe and atmosphere of the game and expands it into a whole new plane. Can't really express how much I love your music. Thank you so much. Your music makes my day every time.
When I subscribed, I thought you would only do songs for mainstream games, which I wasn't too angry with. But seeing that you made this song (for such an underrated game) with the passion and feelings you bring about in your voice, I really am glad I subscribed to you. TL;DR Please keep making more gems like these, so that I can keep liking and favouriting :D
This song came out when I was experiencing really hard part of my life and you can say it saved me. Now after all these years I am always coming back when I feel low and desperate. It always help me. Thank you Gav for I think I am not the only one you are helping to overcome hard obstacles in life.
I always liked the theory that when we start anew it doesn't stop the calamity from happening and we have to start the game again and do it all again until we finally decide to move on.
I mean that's pretty much blatantly stated by the game. When you go back everyone forgets everything, as stated by the old man. Meaning none of the lessons they learned that would have prevented the Calamity actually matter. Also the line "maybe I'll see you in the next one" is a blatant statement that this is a time loop and the old guy's figured it out. Not much of a theory, it's basically canon.
Al Capwn Not necessarily. Rucks has no idea how to prevent the Calamity, stating that (as far as he knows) knowledge doesn't carry between loops. So if he's wrong (and knowledge does carry): it hasn't looped yet, in which case: all bets are off. Or he's right (knowledge doesn't carry) and it's fundamentally impossible to be sure. "I'll see you in the next one" is indeed a statement implying Rucks assumes (is beginning to accept, it might be) a time-loop. But the 'maybe' is a factor here. Not even he knows. "maybe I'll see you in the next one" is no more proof of a time-loop as the statement "he's in a better place now" is proof of the existence of heaven.
Same, stumbled on commander Shepard a year ago and have brought all his albums since. Great music that always keeps me interested due to the massive variety in genres!
this song is great, especially the part at the end, when I first heard the lines 'turning back is bound to be just another calamity', I just got a shiver running up my spine, that line really encapsules the ending of the game, this song diserves the highest praises I can give it, which, unfortunatly, is just two thumbs way up.
My first encounter with Miracle of Sound was at the end of Bastion, when this song played with the credits. This is still one of my favourites, and not just because of the nostalgia.
Vaughn Monger WELL. Seeing as the soundtrack of Transistor pretty much describes the plot and the game, it almost does that on it's own. Hard to top that OST.
I'm guessing if Gavin did a song for Transistor it'd be from the lover's POV. I guess he could get someone to do female vocals (for Red), but then it wouldn't really be _his_ song, would it? Well, actually, if he could do a collaboration with Ashley Barrett (the voice of Red in the game) for a Transistor song, that would be flipping awesome.
I've loved this song since you first released it, and have spent a long time listening to it on repeat. Today, though, it struck me just how much this song applies to my life right now, and personal growth in general. Thanks Gav, for everything you do.

Almost 5 years later and I still love this. That's why I love Gav's songs, they are always fresh and have a kind of magical spark into it. They shine like diamonds, and diamonds are forever.
I never played the game but this song makes me want to. You have so much talent and music skills, the lyrics are perfect. Every games should have your music in them.
iv been following you for many years, but only discovered this song maybe a few months ago, and honestly this is one of your best. that spunky feel in there gives song almost a snarky attitude, but the chorus feels like it has humility. i dont know nothing about this game, but i love that contrast of cocky/humility
This is going on the Supergiant forums, they need to hear this! You're a supremely talented individual Gavin, and you deserve a shot at making some music for a game. 90 percent of your tunes are better than the games OST, and the ones that aren't are damn close. I'll be darned if they make a sequel of Bastion and one of these tracks aren't in it!
Yes. Yes it is. Its narrative, the style of it all, it's so special and insanely beautiful. The gameplay itself perhaps isn't the best you can find, but everything around it more then makes up for it.
I'd listened to and liked this song forever ago, and only recently got around to actually PLAYING the damn game. Loved the game, and I have a much greater appreciation for this piece now. :D
I saw your interview on Desert Bus, and it was this song that convinced me to pick up some of your music. I bought Level 1, Level 2, and this single and I'm loving all of it. Keep up the great work!
i have no idea how i didn't hear about you before, i just watched couple of your videos & iam amazed by your work. Its right on spot of the theme of the game, its almost like an official work from those games. i lack the words to describe how im in love with your songs.. you deserve much more credit & recognition for you efforts. Keep up the amazing work, looking forward to them!
This is quite incredible how he has made just SO MANY songs about different games and always seems to nail the vibe down to the pixel! With a possible exception of The Witcher 2, which, again, was simply due to the fact that he didn't know you need to play that game at least twice to see more than 50% of it.
My god this is a good song. You capture the essence of the game's experience then you give it your own twist on it to make it a unique and memorable bit of auditory ecstasy. Liked it and bought it, good sir. Your accomplishment deserves nothing less!
Dayummmmm, Gav, videos everyday for like the past three days. Im glad my friend introduced you to your awesome music. And hey man, keep up the awesome work.
Still my favorite miracleofsound song, and still one of my favorite games. Every time I come back here to hear it, it sounds even better. I eagerly await to hear what Transistor might bring you to create!
Aw, man, I'm finding this *now?* I love this! It makes me imagine a continuation after the Setting Sail ending with the difference between 'build that wall' and this song's 'build the road in front of you'. Amazing stuff.
There are 9 voices layered in the chorus, and they're ALL MEEEEEE. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH EVIL LAUGH
And it's utterly gorgeous
The 9 players of heaven
Just wait until he goes on tour with his backing band of clones.
And it makes the song really hard to karaoke/cover. >:I

You're a supremely talented individual Gavin, and you deserve a shot at making some music for a game. 90 percent of your tunes are better than the games OST, and the ones that aren't are damn close. I'll be darned if they make a sequel of Bastion and one of these tracks aren't in it!
Love the way you made your voice sound like the narrator from bastion at parts, my new favourite song
I have never played Bastion, but this song has definitely gotten me intrigued enough to check it out.
Yes. Yes it is. Its narrative, the style of it all, it's so special and insanely beautiful. The gameplay itself perhaps isn't the best you can find, but everything around it more then makes up for it.
This is fantastic. Love your music and love the bastion style music. So together it's amazing
My favorite of his songs...
I'd listened to and liked this song forever ago, and only recently got around to actually PLAYING the damn game. Loved the game, and I have a much greater appreciation for this piece now. :D
It has been many years since i played Bation and i listened to this song for the first time. It is still fire!
I saw your interview on Desert Bus, and it was this song that convinced me to pick up some of your music. I bought Level 1, Level 2, and this single and I'm loving all of it. Keep up the great work!
This is one of those songs that manages to so well capture the style of music of the game. Absolutely fantastic, good job Gav!
i have no idea how i didn't hear about you before, i just watched couple of your videos & iam amazed by your work. Its right on spot of the theme of the game, its almost like an official work from those games. i lack the words to describe how im in love with your songs..
you deserve much more credit & recognition for you efforts.
Keep up the amazing work, looking forward to them!
This is one of my favorite games and the song is beautiful.
This is quite incredible how he has made just SO MANY songs about different games and always seems to nail the vibe down to the pixel! With a possible exception of The Witcher 2, which, again, was simply due to the fact that he didn't know you need to play that game at least twice to see more than 50% of it.
Man, i usually never buy music, but only listen to it on youtube, but your music is so awesome that i just have to buy it to support you!
I'm not much of a music guy, but i always put your songs on repeat. Especially this and New Black Gold.
I'm in love with this song, thank you so much.
Just finished playing through this for the first time since it came out, this song would not be out of place on the OST, fantastic stuff.
There isn't nearly enough love for Bastion out there, so this was great to hear.
One of my favorites, glad it's on UA-cam!
I bought this song yesterday along with Roll Out. Great Stuff lately especially man! Will buy again
can't get this out of my head..........AND I LOVE IT
My god this is a good song. You capture the essence of the game's experience then you give it your own twist on it to make it a unique and memorable bit of auditory ecstasy. Liked it and bought it, good sir. Your accomplishment deserves nothing less!
I love your music man. Something have gotten me addicted to this song. I am not sure what.
Thank you for the wonderful music!
Dayummmmm, Gav, videos everyday for like the past three days. Im glad my friend introduced you to your awesome music. And hey man, keep up the awesome work.
I just got Bastion from last weeks Humble Bundle. Now I can't wait to try it!
I'm honestly impressed that I managed to forget about a song this good.
Still my favorite miracleofsound song, and still one of my favorite games. Every time I come back here to hear it, it sounds even better.
I eagerly await to hear what Transistor might bring you to create!
Thank you for the support :)
This is amazing. Truly, truly amazing.
Ah man, great song as usual, and REALLY captures that Bastion feel. I love this game and it makes me happy to see you make a song based on it.
One of my new faves...
Aw, man, I'm finding this *now?* I love this! It makes me imagine a continuation after the Setting Sail ending with the difference between 'build that wall' and this song's 'build the road in front of you'. Amazing stuff.
just can't stop listing to your music man, it matches so damn well with the video, big fan.
