This is a lesson on playing the harmonica part to Neil Young's classic 'Heart of Gold' from the album Harvest. You need a G harmonica to play along with this lesson, though you can still use the tab on any other key.

You taught me how to play harmonica two years ago, and for that, I thank you. It turns out, I've become quite exceptional at it, and I simply know I wouldn't have been here now without your videos.
Thank you again. Cheers!
For Tabs: First Solo: @1:03 ; Second solo: 3:18 ; Third solo: 5:30
I don't play the harmonica. But after seeing this video, I'm going to start. Thank you so much
Good! Great!
Me too
Did you start? I’ve been playing 2 months now and it’s life changing
I'm french, so my english is not good, and i'm sorry of that.
But I had to comment for tell how much i've liked your vidéo.
I'm a beginner, and it's hard to find tutorials with people who take the time to explain,
Other tutorials are frequently too fast for me, but not yours.
I really like the way you explain, and the way you play, continue like this !
Sorry again for my english mistakes, and i expect you can describe me :D
Bye ! ;)
Thank you Matrista for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoy the lessons. Keep playing and you'll get there!
All the best,
Liam
Your english is pretty good
salut mon ami! :)
Your english is better than my french and I took it for three years in high school!
Thanks , I liked your lesson.I think you came close to what those solos are like, not 100% but so far best I've seen here.Good job!
Thanks :)
Ok Liam I’m in..!
I’ve played guitar for 20 years so I know the song like the back of my hand but I’ve never played the harmonica.
Can you please recommend a really good harmonica because after hearing you play this I’m gonna learn it immediately.
You are an inspiration fella..!
Thanks Troy! I recommend a Hohner Special 20 harmonica. Good luck! Cheers. Liam

Ugh, I’ve ordered a marine band in G, it’s arriving today (I don’t waste time buddy..!)
Will this be ok..?
Thanks Allan Ho - check out my lesson on wah wahs etc here: ua-cam.com/video/SN_TK5p8pRQ/v-deo.html. Hope it helps!
Hey i was wondering what key harmonica was that
I'm using a C harmonica in the wah-wah lesson.
Cheers,
Liam
Thank you for making it possible for me to actually see and hear how to play this song on harmonica. The graphics are a great way to help us play the correct notes and whether to blow or draw. I can now finally accompany myself on guitar to this classic song. Nice job. Peace.
Btw, I subbed you. Looking forward to more help on my journey to harmonicaville. Peace.
TheMisterMonkeyman Thanks for the kind words, good luck on your harmonica journey and see you again soon! All the best, Liam
Thanks men! Awesome tutorial. Easy to learn
You're welcome kier atinon, thanks for watching my lessons! Cheers. Liam
I enjoy your videos. Great job. Greetz from germany 👍
Learning to play harmonica for the first time! Heart of Gold is one of my favorites. Amazing that I can actually play along.
Did you ever learn this out of interest?
Die Dame hat Geschmack 👍🏻🙃
Many thanks for that
You're welcome Daniel 😎
Thanks for this. Sounds just right. Just starting to learn harmonica and I l;ove this song.
Me and my hohner blues ms is loving this, god job and thanks! :D
+Bautabertil You're welcome, I'm glad you're enjoying learning. Keep up the good work! Liam
Blues Harp is so underrated
Such a rich woody sound
Thanks for the tutorial. Actually really helped.
You're very welcome :)
The harmonica makes me cry. Especially in this song.
Thanks for the video, I have slight issues with somewhere around 0:55 he plays a little differently
Thank you sir. Got it.
Welcome 👍
Thanks for the video! You're a great teacher and your lessons are easy to follow. One question I had about the end of the second solo. You have 3D4D 3B4B at the very end but it seems as if you don't play that when you're going through it. It seems you end on the 4B5B 4B5B. Maybe you already addressed this in another comment but I didn't see it. Thanks again!
Thanks for the kind words and question Tyler. I've just looked over the solo again and assume you mean the end of Solo 2, which finishes on 3 and 4. The end of solo 3 does finish on 4 and 5 but that is reflected in the tab I have provided. Hope that helps.
Keep blowing!
Liam
awesome job:) really helpful! thanks
+Bob Flyfishin Thanks for watching, Bob!
I understand this and I don’t play harmonica.
Great video. but just a suggestion. In the last part of the first solo, instead of using the letter "d" to indicate three times, why not use something else, since the D is being used to indicate drawing a breath?
Very cool. Couldn't figure it out myself.
Thanks Jacob!
I'm brazilian and I love so this wonderful song. Now I got a G harmonica, I'm completely able to play now, after months only using a C harmonica.
Your teaching is so precise I fully understand and follow you thoroughly. Without harmonica solo in between, this song might lose its charm. Thx!
+Ponkpolo Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoy my lessons. Keep practising, it's worth it! All the best, Liam
Hey, I was wondering what brand of Harmonica would be best for playing Heart Of Gold? Any G Harmonica or ? I'd appreciate any feedback . Great Video, very helpful👍🏼
Hi Joshua, I recommend a Hohner Special 20 😎
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing lesson. I am currently learning harmonica by my self and your lessons are very useful = )
Excuse my bad English. Grettings from Brazil.
Thanks Eduardo, you are very welcome. Good luck with your playing and thanks for watching :) Cheers, Liam
Many thanks for your attention and support, Liam!
I love you channel. Keep ut the good work.
Cheers!
Took my lessons from Liam to learn this song for a special friend! Thank you Liam for making that happen in such a SHORT amount of time!!' You are an AWESOME teacher!
Thanks Laura, and you're welcome! Liam
Hey, I like how you actually show us how he plays it himself. With the tabs I found online, I had a hard time making the tabs actually sound like how old Neil Young plays it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson Ada. It's a good point you make, and highlights one of the great advantages of video over tab. There's more to come so watch this space!
All the best,
Liam
I really liked that lesson. Would you break down tom pettys harmonica songs?
Hi Anthony, I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson. I haven't worked on anything of Tom Petty's yet but I'll bear it in mind if there's a demand for it. Watch this space for more lessons!
All the best,
Liam
Harmonica C?
The way you played the last portion of first solo don't seem to match the tabs..
Ya I think he said that his version was different than the tabs. But tbh I play random notes and it sounds pretty much the same. Neil young had different versions also.
GREAT LESSON !!
Thank you verry much bro!
Kaow maddog You're welcome, keep on learning! Liam
thank yuo so mucho Greant lesson
Outstanding instruction, great stuff Liam...
+NLGhostWolf Thanks for watching! Liam
Im a starter with a new blues harmonica in G. So helpful! Thanks
Very welcome!
Hi Liam, I notice that a lot of Neil Young, Tom Petty, and Rolling Stones (Sweet Virginia) songs that have harmonica solos in them are not played with clear notes, but rather "messy" as you call it. Is that intentional on the part of the artists? I've tried to replicate that "messy" sound but it sounds terrible. I actually like that messy sound on some songs, but how do they get it and still make it sound good? Thanks.
Hi Bob, thanks for the question. Often it's a case of playing the guitar and harmonica at the same time, so the harp is in a rack and it's harder to get clean notes because you're multi-tasking. Sometimes it just sounds bad, but if you pick your moments then the adjacent notes will harmonise (hence harmoni-ca) so it can sound sweet. Try to relax because forced air will make the chords sound horrible. Also if your harp is even slightly out of tune then it will sound rough. It's not to everyone's taste but it's often the sound people want in a folky sort of context. Cheers, Liam
Great Q
I don't think it's by mistake, it's rock and roll after all. The harmonica sounds amazing on this song, that's way more important than being clean, it's all about what Neil was feeling.
Hey dude, I've practiced this for a while now and I'm just wondering how to make it sound more like the song, without just using single notes, if you know what I'm trying to say. Thanks for the awesome tutorial
Hi Carter Man - if you listen to people like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Springsteen etc you will notice that not all their notes are clean. It's just a case of making your mouth a little wider so it's less accurate. You can experiment with doing it more on certain notes and see what works for you. It's all part of the folky style. Thanks for watching. Liam
@@Learntheharmonica alright sweet man. Thanks for responding
Keep the main note (the melody note) on the right (ie make it the highest sounding note). If you now listen to song you should hear this.
That's great. I wish I were into listening English Songs and enjoy them more.
Outstanding! I have never played harmonica before and I'm half way trough this to add to my guitar playing and singing of the song. Once I get this down it will be time to take your complete beginner course.
You can do it Cecil! Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it. Cheers. Liam
Mine is an SX Blues harmonica. It's good but not as good as good as the Hohner (already ordered from one music store). But for learning purpose I will stick to this until I can master the basics. Your video is really an eye opener as I've never thought of so many tune and style of play this instrument can do in the hand of creative minds. Thanks a lot.
+Schmuelsons Reidl Thanks for the kind words. Good luck with your playing, and keep up the good work. If you have a question,, please ask me and I can answer it in my next live Q&A! All the best, Liam
Perfect beginner tune not hard to do that along with playing guitar
hi Liam, thank you for your video. I understand I need a G key harmonic, but can you be more specific on the harmonic? for example, how many holes on it? I am a beginner, thank you.
Hi, thanks for your question. You need a 10 hole diatonic harmonica. See my video here on what make/model/type of harmonica to buy: ua-cam.com/video/vuajLny-rIE/v-deo.html. Cheers, Liam
Aha! I finally struck gold finding this video..already bought a Hohner harmonica in G ( 12 holes though ) and could not do anything with it..now I can start to learn the 3 solos...thank you! Liked and subscribed!
You're welcome Ian, thanks for watching :)
Which harmonica should i buy for this?
Hi Simon, you need a G diatonic harmonica. I recommend a Hohner Special 20. Cheers. Liam
Can I play it in a C harmonica?
Yes, you can follow the tab using any key of harmonica - you only need a G if you want to play the song in the original key. Cheers. Liam

does anyone know where there's a guitar track WITHOUT harmonica of this for practice?
explanation too complex, I like more videos where you use (-) you understand much better
Do you tongue block or lip pursing for single notes cuz i just started and that tongue block is horrible
+El Torino Hi there, I actually do a mixture of both but I lip-pursed for many years before getting into tongue-blocking. Many great players don't TB at all, although I think there are benefits to it - see my video on tongue-blocking. And good luck! P.S. Sorry for my slow reply, I only just saw your question!
+LearnTheHarmonica.com NP mate, thnx for your answer
Watching from Zambia, and learning how to play for the first time.
Welcome to the harmonica!
just learning to play the harp ill stick with you you sound great
+Tony Charmz Thanks Tony, I'm glad you're ejoying my lessons. Good luck for 2016! Liam
Is that a diatonic harmonica?
I will be happy if someone answer♥
Yes, it's a diatonic harmonica in the key of G. Good luck with the song :) Cheers. Liam
@@Learntheharmonica thank you so much
Love you from USA ♥
Hi Liam. You are such a good beginner teacher. I have moved on to guitar from the harmonica. I’m guessing the song on the guitar is in the key of Em and G is the relative major key for Em? Is that the reason why it is played on a G harmonica. I was thinking I may have to try and buy a Em harp. I’m not even sure it exists 🤔 to play it in the 1st position. Your expertise would help me get my head around harmonica keys used alongside the guitar 🤗 I’m impressed how you reply to most questions. As they say in NZ you are a top bloke. Cheers Brent
Hi Elijah, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes you're right that the scales for G major and E minor contain the same notes - they are relative keys. They do actually make Em harps - Lee Oskar make a lot of minor-tuned harps - but that isn't what Neil Young uses for this song, it's just a G harp. Cheers. Liam
P.S. Sorry about the cricket - no one should win/lose a world cup by that margin, it's too cruel.
LearnTheHarmonica.com 😋. Our cricket players are good sportsman. They took the loss gracefully. Sport should be about participation and doing your best. Not all about winning. Professionalism has brought about the drive to win. Which always relates to money 😋 if you are ever down this way (NZ) . You are always welcome to call in for a drink or something too eat. We have a similar skill. How we relate to people and make them feel comfortable quickly. Tomlin and Justin (from Justin guitars) have the same skill as us. That’s why you are all so successful. I find tomlin is a good teacher. But I relate better with you. Take care. Brent
Can i play this on tremolo harmonica 24 holes?
Hi anonymous guitarist, check out my video on diatonic vs. tremolo harmonica for the answer: ua-cam.com/video/rMLKPREJ1Vo/v-deo.html. Cheers. Liam
Is it possible that the tabs on the second Solo are wrong?
this is what's written:
5B6B(d-d) - 5B6B(d-d) - 5B6B(d-d) - 5B6B(d-d) - 3D4D - 3B4B - 3D4D - 3B4B - 3D4D - 4B5B - 4B5B - 3D4D - 3B4B
and you seem to play:
5B6B(d-d) - 5B6B(d-d) - 5B6B(d-d) - 5B6B(d-d) - 5B6B(d-d) - 5B6B - 3D4D - 3B4B - 3D4D - 4B5B - 4B5B - 3D4D - 3B4B
It's prolly me not hearing it properly but i've been wondering it for a while and i thought i might share it!
Anyway, really great video and thank you so much!
Great lesson, learned to play this. Request. The song "You've Got A Lover" by Shake Russell with Dana Cooper. Here is the video ua-cam.com/video/OMtz4B_5XMI/v-deo.html on UA-cam. Can you tell me what key is the harmonica in when using the chords E A B E A and I think the song is in the key of E.
Sounds like an A harmonica to me. So he's playing in 2nd position - a common thing for blues, pop, rock music. Here's a little video on working out what 2nd position is: ua-cam.com/video/DXGjDG95M1U/v-deo.html
Cheers,
Liam
LearnTheHarmonica.com
Ok, went to your site. What about the key on this? Thanks
I have to admit I used to play this song on the old Gob Iron many moons ago and having just recently brought a new harmonica brace I thought I would play it again and all of a sudden I noticed something was not quite right and I was puzzled as to what on earth was wrong. Having read some of the comments here I noticed that you did mention in reply to one of them that your were using a 10 hole diatonic harmonica and that perhaps explains the trouble I am having only now only having an 8 hole Harp in the key of G to which you would have to start the song off by drawing on the 3rd hole and not blowing on the 5th like you did here. I must have had a 10 hole harp when I played years ago because with only 8 holes you will soon run out of notes and there is no way of even bending them to fit either. So I guess I will have to get a new harp.
was looking at the other lessons on youtube yours is the only one that I like great job!
Thanks Richard, high praise indeed! Cheers, Liam
Thanks my friend for Avery good lesson I have harmonica and trying to learn now .
You are welcome :)
Thanks for this! I've been asked to do a few acoustic Neil numbers to open for a live electric band doing a bunch of his songs on his birthday coming up in a couple of weeks and I need all material that they're not doing so my options are limited and this lesson helps me out quite a bit.
Is there any chance you could do another short one for Mr. Soul from the Unplugged performance? The guitar is in double drop D and I keep reading the harp is in G but as simple as it sounds I can't seem to get my arms around it. There's only a few notes but they're drawn out and mournful so the intonation is really important.
Hi Red Wood, I'm glad you enjoy my lessons :) I am planning another Neil Young week of lessons for the future, although it probably won't be ready in time for your performance I'm afraid. What other songs are you planning to play? Cheers. Liam
Thanks for the response!
My set list at this point:
World on a String
Mr. Soul
Heart of Gold
Old Man
Needle and the Damage Done
It only took me a few minutes to get the hang of Heart of Gold and after a bit of practice I feel really good about it but I'll be danged if I can even find a starting point for either Mr. Soul or World on a String, at least with a G harp. I'm really wondering if he's actually playing a D. If that turns out to be the case I'll run out and buy one today!
How many things I've learned on your channel, thank you.
Thanks Jano :) I'm glad I can help you. Cheers, Liam
Just wondering did you make a mistake at the start of the video when you said 'with abit of 3 draw' ?
Also, could you please do a video of Pablo Nutini - Pencil Full of Lead, that'd be a great song to learn.
Forget about the "B" for blow. Just use the hole number for blow, then use a dash or minus for a draw like say -4 for draw hole 4. Easier to understand and more standard these days.
Also, you missed the intro which is the signature piece?
Thanks so much! You are a lifesaver. Keep harpin’!
Thanks!
How to play it in the key of C im beginner on the harmonica dont understand alot about it
Hi Rafik, you can play this on any key harmonica, it will just be in a different key from the original song. Just follow my tab :) Cheers, Liam
Hi, I have a C harmonica. can I play with him? thanks:)
Goddamn I love UA-cam
So bad... I haven't an harmonica... Well i play this whith my guitar :) jejeje
Well done!! What harmonica model did you use in this video?
Hi Alex, I think it was a Hohner Special 20 in this video :)
What’s a blow and a draw?
Blow means breathe out, draw means breathe in.
Love your Channel! I've just started learning the Harmonica and your tutorials are a great resource! :)
Thanks Chris. Enjoy!
dude i love heart of gold
Me too!
Have you done Neil Young's Love is a Rose?
+Wendy Green Hi Wendy, I've not, and I have to say I'm not familiar with it! Is it a favourite of yours? Cheers, Liam
+LearnTheHarmonica.com It is. Check it out. :)
You're missing notes...and you're kinda off on the third solo...
just listening to the song and i'm no expert , but i'm sure he goes down to the 3 blow at the end of the first line before the chord
Great video! Thank you
You're welcome Sara, thanks for watching! :)
amazing job ! it works
Thanks :)
harmonica = E or G or C ???? (important E,G or C???)
he said it was a G
You really talk a lot ! Ahahahah!
With all due respect your videos are laid out much better now, from a viewers stand point! Your awesome!!!!!!!!
I can't watch the old ones, it's too painful for me!
Hello, I'm never played an harmonica before. So do I need a G harmonica which is diatonic or chromatic, or something else ? Thanks in advance.
Hi, for this song you need a G diatonic, but most of my lessons use a C diatonic. I have a quick video here on what harmonica to buy: ua-cam.com/video/vuajLny-rIE/v-deo.html
Have you ever heard the original version????
Wow man that is awesome 👌 thank you for sharing 😀 .
No problem 👍
hi LiamI'm French and I appreciate your lessons. Could you explain me what is in bracket : ddd. There is no figure after. Also I DO NOT REMEMBER WHAT THIS SIGN // means.ThanksMuriel
Hi Muriel, thanks for watching. / (forward slash) is a semitone (half step) bend, so // is two semitones (a full tone, or full step) bend. And the brackets (d-d) are articulations with the tongue, so you move your tongue to imitate a "d-d" shape so that the note has a "d-d" sound. I hope that makes sense. Thanks again for watching! Cheers, Liam
HI LIAM!
THANKS FOR YOUR KIND ANSWER!I CAN PLAY SIMPLE MELODIES FOR THE MOMENT BUT I WILL GO ON LISTENING TO YOUR VIDEOS TO PROGRESS. TAKE CARE!!MURIEL
WTF I keep blowing to many holes (notes) how do you get over that?
+kingdom777866 Hi, I have a lesson on getting clean single notes here: ua-cam.com/video/YkEfzb-3pIM/v-deo.html
Good luck!
Liam
Thanks very much, Great explanation ! ..... And a Great Somg for the harp. 👍 Roj
+RiojaRoj You're welcome!
any tips for c harmonicas? really wanna play this song
never mind I made my own tab
Thank you!
You're welcome :)
Thank you for doing this!!!!
You are very welcome :)
Liam, I learned Heart of Gold on a B flat harmonica, but I realize that the song is in G. What key harmonica would you recommend if I don't have a G? I have harps in A, C, D, and B flat.
Hi Bob, the problem is you need the correct key to play this tab along with the song. You could try to work out how to get some of the notes on your C harmonica, but it would be a different tab, so you either need to improvise a tab of your own on, for example, your C harp, or you need to buy a G!
I will invest in a G! Thanks for the lesson and the reply, Liam.
Thanks for the video. Great job. I just bought my first harmonica and thought I would start with Heart of Gold. I did get the G key.
John Austin Thanks for your kind words John, all the best on your harmonica journey! Liam
I tried learning that song, but i attracted some horses instead. Is that a coincidence?
+Mads Pedersen They always come running...
Thanks!
what scale direction do i hold the harp?
Most people hold the harp with the low notes on the left (so the hole numbers are on top) although there are some high profile exceptions and it's really just down to preference.
What chords would I use on guitar if I wanted to translate this to a C harp?
+mossy1 Hi mossy1, there's a good Reddit discussion on this. If you capo your guitar on the 5th fret you can use your C harmonica www.reddit.com/r/Guitar/comments/2ufejr/does_neil_young_play_heart_of_gold_with_a_key_of/ Let me know how you get on! :)
Thank you for your friendly time and easy teaching style. Now I can JAM to this great tune :) :) :)
Thanks for the comment Grant, you're very welcome. All the best and keep harping!
Liam
Is the last line of solo 2 incorrect?
nevermind. Its correct
solo 2 seems not to match the indicated notes
Hi Muriel, what sounds different?
Hi I live in uk what harmonica can you best recommend for a beginner allso what dos draw mean
Hi Kenneth,
Thanks for the comment. 'Draw' means to breathe in on the harmonica, so that the air vibrates the 'draw' reed (which gives you a different note from when you blow). You want a ten hole diatonic harmonica for these lessons. I started out using Hohner Big Rivers but a lot of it is down to personal choice and there are good options from Seydel, Suzuki and Lee Oskar too. With my new students I usually use a rule of thumb of £20 or more is a good harmonica. Hope this helps! Liam
Ok cool thanks for getting back to me allso can you recommend a harmonica for a beginner I'm into Neil young
Kenneth Williamson I started out using Hohner Big Rivers but a lot of it is down to personal choice and there are good options from Seydel, Suzuki and Lee Oskar too. With my new students I usually use a rule of thumb of £20 or more is a good harmonica. Hope this helps! Liam
Yes that's grat so if I was to bye one on ebay for 20 could you give me a link to a good 20 one to start with also do they go out of tune at all
