I have the Keith Haring set. It, too, was an impulse buy at my local Blick. It was on the clearance table and I think I got them for $11 dollars. They regularly go for over $30. And yes, the foam - you've got to put it over the pencils and then close the tin. If it's in the lid, it slides down and stops the tin from closing. People on the Internet decided that the watercolor pencil line was possibly the Fancolor line, which is their student grade. They are less pigmented than the Museum or Supracolor but I like them well enough. BTW, Keith Haring was a famous painter in the 80s. Known for his very distinctive graffiti style and friendships with other 80s icons like Madonna and the downtown NY scene. When he got AIDS, which he did pass away from in 1990, he lent his famous crawling baby and hearts motif to his own and other foundations to raise money for AIDS/HIV education and research. His estate seems to have done this Caran d'Ache partnership. I liked your sparkly painting. All those paints are lovely.
Hi Becky, pretty colors. I love your suspicious witch! She is so cute in a wichy way. The red tin is pretty. I would swap the watercolor pencils for regular pencils or caran d'ache professional watercolor pencils with a black water-resistant fine liner. But that is just me. I am so glad you had a great trip! Those glittery paints are beautiful.
Becky, yes please make more videos showcasing your supplies. They are fun and educational to watch. It's a crying shame about the Caran d'ache watercolor pencils and pen. I didn't think they made anything of that low quality level!
I use Micron non waterproof pens to add shading etc, it still leaves a nice sharp line behind but spreads well when wet even after ten minutes drying time.
Thanks, Becky! I appreciate how enthusiastic you sound ehrm you try art materials. I loved thr Japanesque colours. I got the Keith Haring Caran d'Ache set. They are actually OK for line amd wash sketching. The Leith Jaring collection included a colouring book, so my guess (as yours) is that this was aimed for children. Its all matter of expectations. Your suspicious with is lovely too!
Love watching you play with your supplies. The sparkly paints are gorgeous 😍. The watercolour pencils are disappointing. Always happy to watch you showcasing your goodies. Enjoy your week.
Thank you, I guess not everything can be perfect but it's a bummer when art supplies end up being disappointing. At least the sparkly ones were great, yay!
Yay a new Becky video! Currently trying to sew my first handmade sketchbook (I needed an A3 where I can work wet / mixed media and I couldn't find one suitable, so why not make it.) but it's tedious work so your new upload is very welcome as a distraction!
This video was really inspiring and makes me want to dig out my sparkly paints!! Such a shame about the pen though but I think you managed to recover it really well, loved the finished witchy art!! I would really like more video's like this I really enjoyed it :D
New viewer, never saw your channel before but you got a 👍🏻Thumbs Up👍🏻 & Subscribe from me off of just this 1 video. 😅😁👍🏻👍🏻‼️ Also, I think the; basically, "Watercolor" marker-pen helped with the shading, darkening the creases in the fabrics & making the items like the hair come forward and the areas around the hair receed, like regular shading. I also loved the sparkly watercolors you applied at the end, very beautiful.
Magpies! Assemble!!! Those sparkly/shimmery paints are insanely beautiful. My favorite too, definitely 😄I know a Swedish woman who makes those kinds of paints too, and they're just.. no words, so pretty. I'm not sure what the shipping costs would be to Australia though. If you're interested in her name, I can share it of course (either here, or via insta dm?) Anywaaayyysss, enough rambling.. I like the witch painting :) Who cares about a few mistakes, which didn't even really show up in any case. We're our own worst enemy when it comes to those things (I think I've said that before lol). I'd totally like to see more videos like this one... you can never watch enough art supplies being used 😄Thanks for the video, Becky ❤
It's hard to resist shiny paints, especially when they're heavily pigmented and sparkly! You can send me an insta dm if you like - if she has a page, I can follow! Mind you, I'm totally out of shiny paint budget right now, haha! I'm sure I'll have more art supply videos like this one in the future. Still got plenty of stuff which I haven't shown yet. 🙈
Hi Becky, you should pronounce “pastels” any way you want. Who knows, knows. 😊 I think your suspicious witch is absolutely beautiful, with her expression and her colors 🧙 Well done! Thank you and yes, keep this kind of videos coming, please.
I have some CVarts watercolours and can confirm that they are amazing!! I have a lot of handmade watercolours and 10AUD is pretty good for a half pan. The Sumikundo also has a mid range, so they have the very dark, the middle and the pastel set. I love all 3 sets but the pastel is my favourite. I love your witch!
Thank you! I'll have to look out for the midtown set - I've only seen the pastels and dark ones. I love sparkly handmade watercolours, and yes some of them are really expensive; far more than I want to pay, lol.
I am glad you went to witch. I saw the cover art and thought it was a really cool artwork too. I've never noticed a difference in how everyone pronounces pastel from country to country. The word I noticed that can be very different is portrait. The MH colours are so pretty. I love the glittery ones too. They would be great for Christmas themed artworks.
I like water soluble pens for urban sketching, it's the most minimal way to do ink and wash! Pen, water brush and paper and that's all you need for line and tone.
@BeckyTregear I actually love doing portrait practice with just watersoluble ink and water but definitely it can be a bit easier with architecture. I think the key is to keep it simple and not use too much water.
I too understand the buyers regret for the pretty tins of Caran d’ache artist collabs - I got the larger set through and although I discovered as you did that all the pencils were inferior quality, mine had 40 neocolor 2s on the top row so I am able to use the set as they are fantastic quality!
if you look up paint pigment the mica powders are actually the cheapest and very common. gum arabic youve probably already got, glycerin, honey, a bit of water. then you need something to distribute the binder and pigment, thats probably the hangup. but you can make something like 2 fullpans worth from a small pile if you feel like making a bit of mess.
I loved watching you experiment with supplies! As someone who draws in a style much closer to anime and cartoons, I think you have a real talent for it! :D Looking forward to more videos in the future.
Hi Becky, Love your Suspicious Witch and those shiny paints, ♥so, of course I went straight to CV's website. That little palette is currently selling at $AU120.00 ($9.50 postage). Fortunately Afterpay wouldn't work, so I've resisted for now. There are other sets from about $70 upwards, so I'd love to get some, eventually. Cheers.
I looked at that Caran d'Ache pencil set, and I'm happy I didn't get it because I haven't tried their pencils before and this would have stopped me from buying them again!
Their actual artist pencils are wonderful, but I think these were from their kids' range, and a lot less nice. Supracolor pencils are lovely though, as are Museum Aquarelle.
I live in the U.S. and have the 120 Supracolor set. I love them. I would never buy from the Caran d'ache site though, I got mine from either Amazon or Blick's at less than half of the full retail they are selling it for. Why anyone would get it from them if they have access to other sites selling for over $200 LESS, I don't know. I became enamored with Supracolors years ago when I purchased a basic 12 color set. Not that I do that much work with them, but dry or wet, they are very high quality...I think they're artist quality, but perhaps not if compared to the high-end Pablo line. But they're certainly good enough for me. Thanks Becky!
Its amazing how often a high end brand art material company will rip you off by putting low end supplies even children wouldn't use inside limited edition or special edition items. I recently got ripped off purchasing a special package of 12 pastel faber castell watercolor pencils for almost $30 that I now have no idea what I will ever use them for as the leads as so hard they gouge the paper.
I agree, it's super disappointing when that happens! It seems that usually these special edition items just aren't worth the price. Do I learn this? I do not! 😂
Well, at least you have a really cool tin to put what you want in it. I have one of those as well which I put my fave Faber Castell watercolor pencils in. Disappointing for sure! Love the paints though!
The Vivid Blue Michael Harding reminds me a bit (except not as vivid) of a the cobalt blue by Qor. It's in their "High Chroma" set. If you don't mind the cobalt, I think it's one of THE most beautiful turquoise blues out there. Not sure how it would compare to the raged about & pricey Daniel Smith "Sleeping Beauty" turquoise blue, but I figure it would look very close. At least in the U.S., Golden, who makes Qor, has priced the 6 small tube High Chroma set at a very reasonable price. But like so much else, it's probably gone up a little or lot since the last time I purchased a set a few years ago.
Sleeping Beauty turquoise is quite a lot greener than the Vivid Blue - I got that very expensive paint tube for my birthday a few years ago - I need to get it out again for another look now, haha. I have Qor colours too - can't remember if one set was high Chroma...honestly I've lost track of some of my colours. I need to organise them all next year I think!
Those carandache were probably the student grade version. Very meh. I really want the bicolor carandache swiss color, but they're expensive/hard to find.
Very meh indeed! It is kind of amazing how much difference there is between student grade and their pro level pencils which are really great. I should have looked more closely before I bought the tin! 😭
