The face on the building is a portrait of William Barak, he was the last traditional ngurungaeta of the Wurundjeri-willam clan, first inhabitants of present-day Melbourne
Lindsay Nicholson wow! Great info! That makes the building even cooler and more significant. Thanks so much!
Other Australians joke that if you don't like the weather in Melbourne, just wait 10 minutes. It will be different by then.
It must be a southern state type of thing because that's what they say in the South in America (Alabama, Florida, Texas etc)
Ive heard that four seasons in one day never experienced though regular went family there during school Christmas holidays every year. Number of times I would fly down for a week or two weeks lab practice winter didnt bother me during those times just double hoody. Never experienced that much fog coming out your mouths so that was interesting. The double hoody also helped to not be bothered by the drizzle.
It's because Melbourne is on the south side of Australia, facing the southern ocean and Antarctica. If the wind blows from the north, over the hot desert, it gets to 40+Celsius in summer, like a dry, hot blast-furnace. Often, if the wind changes direction to the south, it drags up the freezing cold air so the temperature plummets down to 20Celsius in half an hour.
TRUEE
Once it was raining and then not 10 mins 2 secs it was sunny
Melbourne, the only city where you can get 4 seasons in one day
You forgot the 5th season.
Shit everyday
Don't like the weather? Just wait 5 minutes.
We're aiming for six
Todd Hellyar Todd you are a wanker....hope you never visit. 💩
I always feel bad when foreigner's assume Australia is warm. Australia is a big country.
Imagine turning up in Minnesota and being disappointed it's nothing like Florida.
There are states that are very warm. Victoria isn't one of them.
hubobubo yes it is. Hit 42 regularly last year
In 2009-2010 the week of the Black Saturday fires we had like 7 days straight at 40C+ maximum temperatures with a few hitting 45C+ and the big one topped out at 47.6C or so. It came with a firestorm that lit the whole state up within hours. People died in their cars as they burst into flames and were incinerated and their bodies were reduced to ash just from the radiant heat conducted through the roadside verge. Alloy wheel rims were reduced to puddles, houses were reduced to ash and dust in minutes. The fire front could melt iron and even CFA firetrucks were not immune. That is a hot day here, okay? The overnight lows were something in the 30C's. To give you some perspective at around 50C, given enough ambient humidity the human body loses the ability to cool itself, and we dies. This extinction of life don't need no high year round temperature average. It just has to be around 50C+ for a few hours only, the humidity high enough, and all life will be gone. Maybe people with their A/C will be fine. The farm livestock and most native animal life will not. Survive that, milksop city ass hats.
Correct about the strange expectations of weather being the same across an entire continent.
However to say Victoria is not warm is ridiculous. It's simply a classically temperate climate. It regularly gets well over 35° in summer for months. Yes, winters and springs are cooler than say Queensland but that's kinda how being further away from the Equator works 🤷♂️
The latitude of Melbourne is roughly equivalent of Washington and Americans expect the weather to be the same from Cape York to Hobart 🤦♀️
Victoria might not be the warmest but she's defo the coolest 😎
When he said Melbourne like an Australian it threw me for a second.
Sam Walker yeah I’m so used to Americans pronouncing the ‘r’ in Melbourne
The most culturally diverse place in Melbourne: Costco.
Crowded House has a song called 'Four Seasons in One Day' - it's about the weather in Melbourne.
Melbourne- the only city were an AFL jersey determines your life future
haha they sure do love their AFL
nah mate, little bias there.... i mean all Melbourne goers are pretty bias partially from what ik about u lmaooo
That's very true! Go Bombers ⚫️🔴⚫️
What footy team do you go for
Carla Jimenez Essendon.
The shrine is called the Shrine of Remembrance
When an Australian in America, I loved the architecture in Chicago. Much impressed.
if u want warm, come to Perth in Western Australia, Its warm all year round most the time except for winter. But winter is short...
Melbourne in blissful normality before the shit hit the fan 😰
Thanks, Tristan. Happy to hear that you have slowed down your rate of speech.
Jere Sitko haha me too. Didn’t even notice it

Everytime I go to Melbourne at any time of year, inevitably if the weather is amazing, I see people carrying umbrellas on the metro and kind of laugh at them. Fast forward to an hour later and I'm scrambling around looking for somewhere that sells umbrellas - which is of course, basically every single newsagent or small store everywhere.
1) - Diversity - Melbourne also has the highest Greek population outside of Athens
2) Yeah, Melbourne weather... 4 seasons in one day.
3) Hospitality - In my extremely limited overseas experience, I have found a lot of countries are very welcoming of foreigners. I went to Switzerland and needed to catch a train at 10pm. A country with four national languages and I didn’t speak any of them! Thankfully, I found a lovely lady who spoke English who educated us on which carriage to get on (1st and 2nd class carriages), which stop to get off at and how to get to our motel. I’d like to think everywhere is like that.
yeah, our weather is a bit bipolar
Borderline Weather Disorder
Welcome to Melbourne.Just have a great time. Its the experiences, the people you meet and your attitude that will determine if you will enjoy your time in any city.
Just don’t overthink the weather.Any city it can rain.
Thanks for your positive attitude and enjoy your time in Melbourne.
that skyline is beautiful. I wish the skyline in L.A. was that pretty; there constructions of buildings going on there and obvious improvements but I wish the building had some color like Melbourne's. That 1 hr trip to the gym?? I was floored by that (and it was even a train ride)
Danny R Thought it odd, Tristan needed an hour to go to the gym. Must have been a reason.
For sure, there are gyms on every second street corner in Melbourne CBD and suburbs. Must be working at that gym to have to take an hour to get there.
It’s a gymnastics gym. Not a typical workout gym. And it’s in the suburbs
U should look up the gold Coast skyline, in australia its kind of like our version of miami
Before Melbourne was shut down due to corona virus
Now it’s open again. Yaaay!
The bushfires were a few months after this too. So he got a great welcome to Aus
Nothing really compared to the death rate in the US though.
@@MsLouisez only 903 people have died in Australia and most were in nursing homes..
@@mrDredd1966 I'm sure you wouldnt be happy if you were one of those 900 though.
You look like Brett Lee (cricketer, fast bowler)
2020 one of the wettest years on record so you have picked a bad time to expect the best from Melbourne's weather.
Best time to visit Melbourne would be Feb and March where the weather is more consistent.
Sept, Oct and Nov are the transitional months after winter where the weather can be a little up and down.
I loved the update of Australia and your video was great. Keep up the great videos.
You really do a good job and it needs to be appreciated. Thank you for what you put out, it is good and positive.
the glass is tinted because it is Low-E, PV imbedded, or low reflective glass. they help the buildings operate more efficiently
as a melburnian i miss all the hustle and bustle 😞
facts:
- out of all the cities in australia, we have the most skyscrapers
- melbourne has the biggest tram network in the world
- we have over 2000 cafes, and are known to have some of the best coffee in the world
- melbourne has the worlds second largest greek population
- surprisingly, we are (were thx to corona) the music capital of the world, with over 700 venues and 500 events every night
- melbourne is one of the sports capitals of the world; we have over a dozen stadiums/arenas within a 20km radius of the CBD
Lachlan Millsteed Any better than you would be Sydney. 😇
I think you will find the Gold Coast has more skyscrapers.
brismike56 in your dreams
Melbourne’s weather is renowned for changing extremely more than once in a day. The Great Southern Ocean and the Westerly winds that blow across the Antarctic do affect the temperatures and the weather ie rain and wind.
U can go to really nice places in melbourne like an art gallery down in docklands, there's realistic art on the wall that u can take pics of, like a realistic painting of u drawing the mona lisa!
yes there is a saying, if you don't like the weather in Melbourne, just wait for 5 minutes!
Glad you are enjoying Melbourne. The park you were in was the Domain, not the Botanical Gardens - they are next to the Domain and well worth visiting. Most of the colourful buildings (other than the yellow one) are just a year or two old. Regarding weather, Melbourne is notorious for changeable weather (the joke is, if you don't like the weather in Melbourne, wait a minute). Spring is also the most unreliable time of year for weather. Summer can be hot (even into the 40s Celcius at times) and autumn is much more stable and probably the best time weatherise (especially March). You can't really talk about the weather "in Australia" because it has quite diverse climates, since it is a large country: tropical in the north, subtropical below that, Mediterranean around Adelaide and temperate in the south. We do get snow in the mountains as well.
Glad to see you’re settling in..don’t worry the weather will get decidedly warmer...here in Sydney they are predicting 38c on Tuesday ...mid 30 s rest of the week.
rhodes1948 glad to hear. The weather it’s still looking a bit rainy this upcoming week here but should get beautiful soon! Can’t wait to go check out Sydney!
3:34 that’s where the ANZAC day (veterans day) march/memorial is held every year. I’m actually in that march at the very end. I’m with the Scottish and you may have seen me in a greenish coloured kilt
There is a 5th season in Melbourne... but what would we know? We never know what season it is!
you can see the shrine from the other end of Swanston St up near RMIT
Glad you enjoyed our new colourful architecture phase! Some say its tacky, I say it's unique and unlike anything else in the world.
That’s how I think of it! Unique and unlike anything
If you want hot weather go to Alice springs. 34 degrees like everyday
The Shrine is a Memorial for WWI. Melbourne known for four seasons in one day.
Melbourne’s weather is pretty crazy!! We love it but it can be a shock to the system if you’re not used to it
Fun fact. Those self raising cranes were invented in Melbourne.
You picked a bad year to come over. We didn't get a Summer 2019-20. Hopefully this Summer will be better with warmer days, less fires and less covid.
Except when it was hot as fuck over New Years and half the country was on fire.
@@shmick6079 Melbourne had quite a cool Summer, lots of smoke, brown rain
Catherina I recall staying inside for a week because it was 40+ and then standing on my roof and hosing everything down to protect us from ember attacks.
@@shmick6079 That would have been scary but not in Melbourne, which the guy was talking about. I distinctly remember News mentioning the exceptionally hot Summer in other places but I'm a whimp that can't handle the cold and I literally had my heater on more times than the a/c. I just checked... Melbourne had only 5 days between 35-39 (my happy place), only 4 days 40 or over and 19 days in the teens over the whole of Summer.
Catherina we live in Melbourne and there was a bushfire 500m from our house.
Thanks for admiring our stunning architecture :) our city is quite modern
there is certainly a lot building going on, reminds me of when i was a kid in the 70s, all the cranes, that was a familiar sight then,as now.(yeah im old )
So, you experienced our notorious Melbourne weather while you were here 😂 Four seasons in one day, that's for sure. And it was only 10 degrees today, so you wouldn't want to be here in winter 😂
You nailed Melbourne in the intro.
What you didn't mention was the Trams.... that's probably how you got to the Domain and Shrine of Remembrance... 2 big things there, outside of the Shrine, firstly the eternal flame (you'll see what looks like a ceremonial soldier standing guard, but look closer it's a police officer in cos-play), second is the Lone Pine, (if the original is still standing) a tree grown from a sapling of the only tree on a hill at Gallipoli (if you don't know that place it's in modern Turkey, where Australians first fought in WWI)
Tristan: *Goes to Melbourne*
Sydney: *sits in the corner crying*
I live in Melbourne it's nice to know you think we are nice people. Yeah Melbourne is a cold state and wet. Spring and summer is a different story
Lift your game tristan & come see our south Coast, West Australia.
Good old October the rainiest month of the year for us in Melbs
I love Melbourne weather. We have beautiful summers, pleasant spring and autumn, winter can be cold and rainy, but no snow. Sure it can rain a bit but what else did you expect in spring? I hope you checked out more than just the Shrine and Botanical Gardens. Melbourne has the best Arts culture in Australia, one of the oldest zoos in the world, lots of hidden gems around town.
Hey Tristan, thanks for giving some input on Melbourne! I’ve been to Australia and New Zealand about 10 years ago, but have actually been thinking about making a move. How hard was it? What kinda budget you lookin at? And did you have your job set up ahead of time? Hope things continue to go well for you man! Very inspired by your courage to do this!!!
Adam Herrera do it! I love it and it hasn’t been too hard. I came with $3000 and spent $2K of it immediately to get a motorcycle. And I got my job ahead of time but that is very rare. I haven’t met or heard of anyone else who has done that. At least not on a work holiday visa.
I used to live in the building you said was your favourite 😁
I thought that view looked familiar. Space Hotel in the CBD is a backpackers but it my favourite place to stay at in Melbourne (private room, not single) and I normally prefer to stay and proper hotels but there is something about that place that is just so friendly.
Looks like a combination of LA and SF without hollywood or silicon valley.
I live in Dandenong (a city which is also a suburb of Melbourne) and we have residents that were born in 160 different countries according to the last census.
Thanks
Melbourne! Known as Bleak City by us from Sydney!!
😂 Melbourne is notorious for its volatile weather!
It’s a great city. Always loved it👌🏻
Glad to see your having fun. So you work on Saturdays?
Hello62701 yep 👍🏼
Come to nth QLD it's always warm 😁
Loll, U can experience the 4 seasons in one day in Melbourne, its usually extreme cold or extreme hot, and i dunno which is worse xDD but its usually cloudy in melbourne. The shrine is to Anzacs, thats why it says Lest We Forget (ANZACS are Australian New Zealand Army Corps)!
What hostel were you staying at? Love the view
Julijana Kizivat it was called Space Hostel
How I stayed in the same hostel when I travelled to Melbourne
Did you go to the MCG?
Melbourne is much closer to the Antarctic than other Aussie cities bar Hobart...the further north you travel the warmer the weather becomes ... just like in America when you travel south.
Typical Melbourne weather for you!
This video was uploaded 4 days before commermorance day. Lest we forget.
Melbourne weather haha , different in other cities
When he said, “walking the streets Ive seen some of the most delicious looking ...” I did not expect him to say food! 🤦♂️
If you go to the suburbs of Melbourne it is even more diverse. Im pretty sure its more diverse than America
I 100% agree, Melbourne is one of the most multicultural places in the world
Love Melbourne...my second home
My brother has lived in Canada for about 7 or 8 years and he loves our buildings in Melbourne, I don't think Sydney buildings are as nice (aside from Sydney opera house of course.)
karen williams yeah I’m not a big fan of the buildings in Sydney, quite boring to be honest.
How have I not seen you?
Melbourne. Literally the only City who doesn't have that ridiculously hot weather half the year. We just get a 6 seasons in a day
If Melbourne had Sydney's beaches everyone would live there.
But as in both cities stay out of the western suburbs.
And Melbourne is almost at the bottom of the earth.
You get cold winds from Antarctica.
Or you get hot dry winds from the desert.
Didn't mention trams !
Greatest city on earth
Hello i am just wondering what is the name of this hostel on the roof top of which u were shooting this video.. its the best view l could ever see.. please do share the name
Space Hotel, 380 Russell St.
I've lived in Melbourne my whole life and drive past that building often and I've NEVER noticed the old man 🤯
Gr8 summary of melbourne. Was there a year ago and loved it. Then Singapore...that was awesome too, but hey, Sydney tops all!!
E McClean can’t wait to visit Sydney
E McClean nah Melbourne on top
Melbourne is sooooooo much better than syd
As a Melbourne native, born and raised, I would be remiss if i didnt reply with a , no actually, Sydney sucks, Melbourne rules comment.
Boooooo! (from a Melbournian ;))
I love my city the burn man best place in the world when it’s not fucking locked down haha next time your down here check out the Mornington peninsula
Good one. But 'sloooooow' down.
It's bad luck to count the cranes on the Melbourne skyline.
Hey Tristan, I have written before, and totally admire your courage for picking up and moving to a place so far from what you are used to. I’ll try and keep a long story short, I lost my best friend this last year and we had a tradition of having me visit her in San Diego every year! Well since that can’t happen and this is the first year I was hoping to do something epic!! Her and I went to Sydney and Auckland when we graduated from college, so I thought Melbourne would be fun!!! I would be coming this month so what are the gay districts? Are there any really nice hotels within the gay district? That was our thing, nice hotels and nice restaurants. Thanks in advance for getting back!! Cheers, adam
Hi Adam, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I can't imagine how hard it must me to lose a friend like that. As far as the gay district goes, I honestly cant say too much about it. I've only been to 1 gay club since I've been here and it was okay. Not as fun as the ones I've been to in Austin but that could have been because I went on a Sunday. I've also spent my time in hostels and not hotels so I don't know of any nice hotels here. If I had to guess, most of the nice hotels are in the CBD and most gay clubs/bars are in Collingwood and Chapel St but they're kinda spread out everywhere. There's not really one "gay district".
My roommate is Australian and I asked him about nice hotels and he recommended The Olsen. Hope that helps!
Tristan thanks so Much for getting back to me!! That was so sweet, and thank you for your condolences. I won’t for Southwest Airlines, so we usually get to fly on other airlines fairly cheaply. What airline did you use to go there from Austin? Also, if I end up coming down there maybe you and I could meet up for a flat white or something ;-). I loved Sydney and Auckland with my friend that I lost so Melbourne would be amazing and a nice tribute trip I think! It would also be super nice to travel and have someone I “knew “ down there! Take care!! Adam
@@adamherrera8958 That's cool that you work for an airline! and I don't remember what airline I took. It was some Chinese one I believe. I just used skyscanner to find the cheapest flight
@@adamherrera8958 Let me know when you've planned your trip a bit more!
Which city is better to live sydney or melbourne
Akash Biswas I’m in Melbourne and everyone here says Melbourne haha. But I can’t say for myself yet because I haven’t lived there yet. But will in a could months!
Tristan Kuhn Fun intercity rivalry was been going on between Melbourne and Sydney for over one hundred years. But, I don’t know why? It is Sydney, of course. 😊
Melbourne is so much better then Sydney by far
As someone who has been to both cities. Melbourne.
@@sunburntbulb4384 what about brisbane if we compare all the three...
yeah October/November are Melbourne's wettest months.
Victoria saying, 'four seasons in one day'.
Melbourne is 4 different weather in 1 day
Australia is the most successful multicultural country in the world & better in excepting people from other countries than America & out of all the states in Territories in Australia, Victoria is the most popular for multicultural backgrounds.
it's accepting! not excepting. If it were 'excepting' then it would not be a successful multicultural society.
@@australiangreatestates4092 aren't we a smart arse
"In Melbourne you can experience all four seasons in one day".
Don't judge Australian weather with the weather in Melbourne.
TSK TSK TSK...Tristan you are not at the botanical gardens your at the Shrine.
They say Melbourne is what you would get if New York & Chicago had a baby.
Lol Melbourne weather.....if you don’t like it, give it 5 minutes and it will change hahahaha #HomeTown

Tristan Please stop saying yall its sounds crazy Mate .? And the US say motor cycle we say motor bike .cheers Mate .
Melbourne is a beautiful well planned city and is easy to find your way around. Unfortunately the people are rude, angry and unhelpful shitheads. Come to Brisbane instead where the people will go out of their way to help you and make you feel welcome.
The only thing bad about melbourne is the lack of food
As an Australian I dont like Melbourne much as it seems to always rain when I'm there. It's probably the coolest state too.
