'Cattle Call' - the Story behind the Story of one of the great songs of the West

Eddy Arnold and several others have had very successful recordings of the "Cattle Call". Here's the story of the man who wrote the song, and the reason he wrote it. Tex Owens' first public performance of 'Cattle Call' is part of this old time radio broadcast from 1935. Settle back and listen to some fine western music mixed with a little home spun drama. This is the first episode of Red Horse Ranch, starring Tex Owens and the Rangers.

Not too long ago, a radio station out of Little Rock would have old radio programs beginning around 10 at night. I would catch them as I was on my way back home from one of the last old time honky tonks with good live bands, dancing and...well...other things.

Eddy made the song famous. Without him we never would have heard of Tex Owens, even though he wrote it.
