- HARDWARE, the 1990 A.I. Sci-Fi horror film about a rogue military robot in a post-nuclear war dystopian future has been PULLED from distribution on all streaming rental platforms.
Written and directed by Richard Stanley, Hardware is only available on pricey OOP blu-ray and dvd releases and a handful of torrents online.
What is happening to AI science fiction films? Why are they being removed from distribution?

Hardware is a very underrated film. I was lucky enough to see it in the 1990s

Agreed! Makes a good double-feature with Screamers (1995) with Peter Weller. Also very underrated and a lot of fun! 😎👍
@@midknightgeek6629 I just re-watched Screamers not too long ago, great flick and Weller is quite good in it. Based on a PKD story Second Variety.
I remember watching Hardware, and hearing it -- the heavy industrial metal music was almost overwhelming, really giving the movie an intense atmosphere.
There is some great soundtrack work from Simon Boswell on Hardware and the songs from PIL and Motorhead are top notch.

Oh, demon seed. That was a wild movie even today.
Demon Seed is awesome, one of the best AI flicks.

That's good to know, at least there is an alternative for Hardware on physical media.

Have dvd from Severin film. Looks good, widescreen. Dylan McDermott"s first film I believe.
My thought is its a liscensing issue , but Stanley has had some personal issues/controversy in the past. Not sure if that would be an issue here. Island of Dr. Moreau had similar issues. Both very interesting films! 😎👍
Yes, I got the Severin DVD as well, great job by Severin, the extras - short films are so cool.
Movies start to disappear about how dangerous a US military AI is when it goes rouge ... at the same time US military is actually working on AI

I think we will see more AI sci-fi movies get de-ranked or suppressed as "AI" (whatever it really is) spreads throughout the world.
They don't want us to know the one, sure fire way to defeat their AI battlebots: exposure to humidity!

"Hardware" is on the Internet Archive, legally free to watch. The quality is terrible though.

Hi R, I don't know what is going on but this could be the start of a trend with AI sci-fi films. There is no reason Hardware should be pulled from distribution, it has a reasonably popular cult status in UK and US at least. It doesn't make financial sense for Miramax to remove it.

Yes, it is possible. Meanwhile, people laugh and call you nuts while AI is all over the place supposedly doing God knows what, and they admit it!
@@horrormike It’s been around far longer than most are willing to admit I believe lots of mainstream artists have been using chatgbt style AI to write song and albums, they seem to fit a certain algorithm

I'm sure it's a rights issue with this movie. Rights for distribution only last so long. And the rights expired until someone else licenses the film from the producer or whomever owns the movie itself today. This is an indie film. So it makes sense here. Colossus: The Forbin Project makes less sense being a major studio film. Maybe it's only pulled for a temporary time, to make it a "big deal" once available again on a platform? Platforms are always removing movies and then adding them back again to recycle their content.
Miramax has controlled the rights since day one. They do have the power to "option" those rights to another company but I've heard of no remake planned.

i would rule out the remake angle even if they WERE doing a remake.
part of the reason for remakes is that "originals" are amazing in built publicity and hype for the new film.
I saw this one a few years ago after I was reminded i saw it in a theater and on the sci fi channel years ago. Ut was probably pulled because it's dangerous as it could be remade better and give the current crap a run for the $😂❤
It could be remade better but not in this current state of remakes, 95% of which turn out shite 😆
