I've been using my Kestral 48 for 5 years now and is the best backpack I've ever owned. I don't use raincovers as the don't work well in prolonged showers. I use plastic bin bags as dry bags, and plastic zip up food bags for small items.
I've got this and think it's a brilliant pack. Osprey say the choice between S/M and M/L depends on the length of your back, not your height. Their website tells you how to measure this to help you decide. It can also be adjusted to get the perfect fit.
Great review Andy. I was about to purchase this in a s/m as I am 5'8 as well and the measure 50cm from top of spine to upper hip but now listening to you I will probably go for the large. You just saved me a lot of aggro. Great channel man I love it 👍🏼
If an Osprey bag is offered in a medium, that’s what I get. However, the latest range I’m a S/M rather than a L/XL. In the older range I’m a M/L rather than a S/M. It’s a minefield!!!
@@BackpackingUK yeah it sounds that way. I'm going for the kestrel 48 like in this video so I assume after watching your sizing and my height that I would be a M/L even though I thought after looking at osprey size chart that I was a S/M. Like I said I think you've saved me a lot of grief. Thanks for your reply Andy 👍🏼
@@shipe1994 in the end I bought both. I kept the s/m and sold the m/l to my cousin who is 6 ft 2 Which seemed to fit him better. But not much better to be honest with you. It genuinely all does depend from your torso size. Knowing what I know now if I was your height I would probably go for s/m. Bare in mind that's if you get the s/m that the waist is also smaller than the larger size. I hope this helps.
It's really good, I really rate it! Check out my packing video to see what I got in it ua-cam.com/video/Xeo12eBz8v0/v-deo.html On top of this my food went in there too. Superb backpack!
I just got the 38 as a day light overnight pack and my EDC bag but like the 48 il get one in future for just camping seem great quality osprey being my first purchase of there's and seems everything I wanted in a back
I use my kestrel FULL TIME freight hopping in the U.S. it works very well I’m just saying this is more than a multi day pack I throw it of the train at anywhere in between 3 to 5 mph mind you I see up to a 1000 miles every couple days and this pack handles the abuse amazing backpack 🎒
Thanks Andy, this is a well thought out backpack with some very convenient features. Unfortunately I recently placed an order for the 58L version, however, the bigger 58L pack doesn't have the side zipped pocket, and the zipped side entry. So disappointing! Ill be sending it back and ordering the 48L version now, I assumed the features would have been the same in the bigger version, but they're clearly not. Great review, thanks : )
Osprey alone have a huge range. When you take all the other brands into consideration it's really, REALLY hard to choose. All I can tell you is the Osprey rucksacks and backpacks are very comfortable to wear.
You e got to really think about what you take if you get the 48 but you can take more luxuries and ‘just-in-case’ items if you get the 58. Both are great backpacks!
@@BackpackingUK I opted for the 48 in the blue. For anyone reading I got it from LD Mountain for £115. Use the discount code TROOP10 for the 10% OFF. ✌️

100% and I'm not just saying that either. As you can see from my reviews I don't say all my kit is good. However, in this case the Kestrel 48 is excellent!
Just to let you know my Osprey came today checking it over solid build and quality, tons of space, love the compression options, just need to get my solo kit and gear in it, this will be my main overnighter pack at the moment but first impression quality pack. Just need to get this video lark figured out and starting putting some content together. Really appreciated you getting back to me and stuff much appreciated and I may of finally found the perfect backpack I got the M/L size been able to adjust and get perfect for me with me being 6 foot 5 I’ve struggled to find the right pack till now, so happy if it lasts and wears well then perfect, time will tell. 👍👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️👍
Andy, Which power bank/pack do you use? I’ve a week’s hike with my kestrel 48 with limited access to power. But wd like one under 200g. Thoughts? Thanks. Nick.
Hi, great video, enjoyed it a lot. I have read that the kestrel 48 actually only fits 43l... do you think it has enough storage room for 5 to 7 days trekking with a tent in warm climate (spain, portugal)?

I have watched a few reviews of the Kestrel 48 and that's the bag I would like.
Keep an eye out for them in the sales, I got a great deal on mine!
I also intend to buy that backpack for sure 😊

It’s a great backpack, perfect for slightly lighter loads plus there’s some great features with this backpack too.

I genuinely highly recommend this one.

Good bag with loads of features in it. I just bought the 36 strattos osprey bag the other day. It's also fantastic. 👍😊 Atb.
One of my mates has a Stratos and really rates it.
Buy the Osprey Kestrel 48 in black from Amazon UK using this link: amzn.to/3sRvYA3

Hi Andy, do you think it would do you 3/4 days in the winter or would you prefer say the 58litre? Cheers
Yes, definitely!

Hi, great video, enjoyed it a lot. I have read that the kestrel 48 actually only fits 43l... do you think it has enough storage room for 5 to 7 days trekking with a tent in warm climate (spain, portugal)?
5 days maybe, 7 days I think no. I would opt for the Kestrel 58 👍
I did a 5 day hike with the 48, no way you can manage 7 days imo.
Why not @gabriel?
Brilliant review! I have the same pack and color! What model is the Rab hoody you're wearing?
It’s the Rab Capacitor Hoodie in Pine. Highly recommended!
Any idea if this bag can be used as a handcarry for flights?
Good question! I would say this is borderline.
and why did the S/M size seem small? S/M size is height adjustable
It didn’t sit right, the m/l was better suited for me.
Is it pass for cabin luggage?
I’d say probably. Best to double check first 👍
Hi! How is Osprey Kestrel 48 vs Rook 50? Thanks!
I actually prefer the Airspeed back (Rook) but I think the Kestrel has better straps and more features. Both are excellent backpacks.
How big of a sleeping bag will it hold
That’s a fairly impossible question to answer. I’ve had a 4 season bag in mine.
Im 5”7 . What is the right size for me?
I’d say a medium. However, they may have changed the sizing now so it’d be a s/m.
How tall are you? I think I’m about your size... 5ft 8” and I’m thinking to get this bag..
I’m 5’8” too 👍
Height is irrelevant, your torso measurement is priority. you can be 5' 8" with a short torso or 5' 8" with a long torso.
Can I use this bag on carry on?
I think a 48 should just be ok 👍
Nice video. considering picking up this one. may I know your height?
I’m 172cm or 5’8” and the backpack is a size M/L.
@@BackpackingUK I think that would be fit on me with 174 cm height. Thanks mate!
Brother give ur old osprey bag
I really wanted this pack, but the woman’s version is only 46L! In my experience women take more than men Lol
