What is wifi calling? Why use wifi calling? Will wifi calling work on my carrier? Will wifi calling work on my phone? Those are a few questions you may be asking yourself. We cover all of those topics and much more in this video so check it out to learn more.
How is wifi calling different than using apps like Skype, Viber, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger? Wifi calling uses a wifi network to place a call or send a message instead of sending it through the cellular network. This can come in very handy when you're on the edge of a cellular network and get poor reception. It also works great if you're in a building which can block the signal from getting in, especially in the basement.
Wifi calling is Free! You won't need to add a special plan or package onto your existing plan. You'll just need to be on a carrier that supports wifi calling and be using a device that is compatible as well. All major carriers currently offer wifi calling so whether you're on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or T Mobile you'll be covered. Many smaller cellular providers like Republic Wireless also offer wifi calling. Which phones work with wifi calling? Many smartphones are wifi calling enabled but it will depend on your carrier which models are available. iPhone 6 and 6S, iPhone 6 Plus & 6S Plus, Samsung Galaxy s6, s7 and note5, Samsung Galaxy s6 edge & s7 edge, LG v10, G4, K7, G Stylo and Blackberry PRIV are just a few of the phones compatible with wifi calling.
Will wifi calling use my minutes? That's another question you may be asking. That will depend on your carrier and plan, some don't count the minutes used over wifi and others do so check with your particular carrier to see how they handle this.
Not sure how to set up wifi calling on your phone? Not to worry, we cover how to turn wifi calling on in this video as well. Both for iPhone (iOS) and android phones.
How do you get better wifi calling? If you want to get into even more depth on how you can make your wifi calls even better we'll explain the settings on your router and how to maximize your call quality. This will improve the clarity of your calls and make using HD Voice even better. What is HD Voice? HD Voice is premium call quality through your cell phone. It doesn't cost any extra you just need a compatible device and carrier.
If you don't want to mess with settings we also cover plug and play solutions to get you going and peak performance.

If you don’t have service, chances are you’re not gonna have WiFi. And if your power goes out, that’s a whole different story. My carrier told me to put WiFi calling on for the hurricane coming (Dorian), but what use is it if your power goes out? Do people usually lose service during storms?

    • @p3757

I don't know if this is standard, but my router has a backup battery so even if you lose power it will still work for a period of time. Might be useful for you if you lose power often!

This video was excellent on finally explaining this concept to me, thank you so much. Important follow up. At 1 point you mention the amount of data a wifi voice or video call uses. I'm not an expert on the lingo, but I thought the whole point of Wifi in general is to not use your data. So if Wi-Fi calling is using your Wi-Fi service, why does data come into play? This is important to me to know because I don't have unlimited data and so I don't want to use Wi-Fi calling through my wifi service if it turns out it's still going to eat up my minimal data anyway. Sorry for my confusion and I hope u answer!

    • @James_Knott

Even though you're using WiFi and Internet for the "last mile", you're still using the carrier's phone network for the rest of the call.

  • @32phoenixx

I was going to set this up on my att s7 edge but it wants you address for 911 purposes. I decided not to set it because I'm assuming if I'm on a wifi network away from my house and need to dial 911 it will use my home address as the location I'm at, not the real location I'm at. So if I'm at a coffee shop and dial 911 it will send emergency services to my house... What good is that?

    • @weboostsignal
      @weboostsignal  6 років тому +1

Hi Duchy, that's an interesting dilemma. The 911 address sounds a lot like what MicroCell requires for GPS Location Verification. If you are at your home address, linked to your WiFi network and using WiFi calling, the 911 feature should work. However, if you're using WiFi calling on a different WiFi network (coffee shop, for example), I don't think it would still link to your home address.
Not sure which carrier you are using, but Verizon posted some really helpful information about the 911 addresses purpose here: www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-204184/

One thing you forgot to mention is when you set up WiFi calling, you will be required to provide a physical address for 911 calls. For this reason, I don't normally connect to other WiFi, as I wouldn't want to find myself providing a wrong address, in the event of an emergency. As for whether WiFi calling uses minutes, it's irrelevant for me, as I have unlimited Canada wide calling & texts and 90 GB of data (which I have never even come close to using). Also, HD voice is also available with regular voice over IP via the Internet. I have set up several office phones that use it.
I have a Google Pixel 6 on Rogers, a major Canadian cell, Internet and cable TV company.

I go thru metropc and I have the Samsung j7prime..
When I go to setting it has a toggle to turn wifi calling on and off and it gives 3 options below that toggle for the options to use WIFI Preferred, Cellular Preferred, and No Cellular...
So since I use my neighbors wifi that he gave me his password but lives down the hall in my apt complex and it's not very strong of a single. So with this said I'm just curious if I toggle it off and set the option for Cellular Preferred? Because sometimes lately I notice my wifi calling notification shows it lit up eventhough I never turned it on..
I have dropped calls using either option anyway..

Whats the point if you have to be on a service that supports this. This is how they get you. I have a ATT pre-paid sim card but wifi calling does not work unless I pre-pay. ***Not Free***. Why cant I use just wifi calling from my phone with no apps?

Can be explained in 30 seconds. Like books by Americans, too much details and stories that seemed irrelevant.

No wifi calling is not free IF you use it through a carrier because u have to pay the carrier monthly. It is free IF you use a free app that allows you to make free call using the phone app.

Netflix doesn't require much bandwidth at all unless you're watching on ultra HD.
Below are the internet download speed recommendations per stream for playing TV shows and movies through Netflix.
0.5 Megabits per second - Required broadband connection speed
1.5 Megabits per second - Recommended broadband connection speed
3.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for SD quality
5.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for HD quality
25 Megabits per second - Recommended for Ultra HD quality

I have Iphone 5S and 6. One has a Sim Card and the other does not. SO I have one active line and I switch devices by popping by sim card between the two. Question is can I call a non simed device with a simed device through wifi. Also how do I call the phone that has no sim. I am guessing because one has no service, the answer is no regardless of internet availability.
