Everything with this song is perfect. That banjo in background. That 'Waltz'-like section. Mariusz Duda vocals. Whole album is amazing. Great reaction. If you want something more in this style there is Mariusz Duda side project called Lunatic Soul. You should check out 'A Thousand Shards of Heaven'.
Side note, Mariusz is playing all the acoustic parts ,but most of the electric parts on a piccolo bass( 3/4 scale with very heavy guage guitar strings.... I have one also!)...the album is fantastic...it's a concept album taking place in a post apocalyptic world (influenced by the book/movie "The Road" + other sources ). It's also a good allegory for their circumstances .....
Thanks for the info about their concert! Just secured my own ticket for that gig so see you there ;) Btw., I've seen them live four or five times already and they were perfect... Really looking forward to this one.
I listened to it twice yesterday driving across the country for work, then the two previous albums as well. Really really into this band at the minute!
I've enjoyed all their albums. Their earlier albums could be a little heavier (as well as Anno Domini High Definition). You've already heard Second LIfe Syndrome but I'd recommend some earlier tracks too if you don't feel like listening to the full albums: Conceiving You, Reality Dream II, O2 Panic Room, and Left Out. One song from each of the four previous albums. Enjoy.
Riverside - Wasteland: Long awaited album finally out. I've listened it at home, car and office since Friday and it's really good. There's a little bit of Dire Straitsish feel in the third song, because of the drumming (Calling Elvis...), but other wise the album is great. I've seen them live once in Helsinki and they were brilliant! I'm happy, Jim, that you will see them live, too. They're famous for good live sound. Have a nice gig! (added this later: It's the second song which has DS vibe.)
About your absence: I hope those grazy things in your life at the moment are grazy good things. I surely wish you to continue your good work with your reaction channel, but it’s not us to decide what you do. There’s not too many your quality people giving comments on the good music, even less prog commentators. So, that being saed, enjoy your life as it is and hope to see you soon!
They were great...i was leaning against the stage barriers... Fantastic show...Mariusz has my favorite voice in rock....prog....the new guitarist is more than adequate ...but didnt have a stage presence like piotr.
Yep Jim, this is exactly what it's about. But it's not just directly about just drugs, relationships, sex or anything. It's about all of those things and the way society and the media floods you with sensory input until you are addicted to and numbed by instant gratification. It was relevant when the song came out and even more relevant today. They were completely ahead of their time and deeper than anything else. The subject matter you were thinking about is correct, but as a metaphor to get peoples attention. Maynard has stated this. This song was sensored by MTV for that very reason when it came out, simply being labeled "Song #1" when shown on air, as it's the first song on the album. Despite this, the song Ænima won a bloody grammy because people connected so much with it and the album was a huge success for the band. The video perfectly mirrors the subject matter and this + all other Tool videos are made by Adam Jones the guitarist himself. This was unparalelled art in it's time, and still is. That is why Tool fans are the way they are, because this is art that really matters and we want the band to get recognition for it. Peace out :)
I discovered Riverside a few months back, they're amazing. I think you'll really like something else I happened upon: 'Socionic - Luminous Shadow' (I take this back, 'Unity' is a better display of their sonic palette.
One of my favs alongside Marillion and Gazpacho. In my opinion this is somewhere in between the last album and Second Life syndrome era. I kind hope for a progressive unity between Riverside and Lunatic Soul.
Like others, I’ve had the album on repeat and am enjoying it. Glad you did the song! As for life, good luck and feel no obligations to anyone. I hope you can drop videos when it’s the right time to do so.
Btw this song is so good that im adding that to my Collection. Really nice. It has an 80s vocal charm. Melodic storytelling but the music is kinda modern. Great combination. Sounds like Katatonia with Uriah Heep or something :D
Hi there! Love Riverside! A band who supported them a few times called JOLLY, just released a new track called Lazarus (Space Masala). Its like an epic trip through space and time, totally out of this world! Please do check them out :)
glad to see you back :) There is a Song that you just have to do Buddy. people need to see/hear that. .. its "Bruce Springsteen featuring Tom Morello" - The Ghost of tom Joad (live) Thats just amazing!
Hey Jim. I've listened to the new Riverside album a couple of times now and I'm finding it a bit harder to get into than their previous work. I don't know if that is down to the loss of Piotr Grudziński but I'll keep listening. I hope you enjoy the concert. I've seen them twice and the clarity of the sound was just great. Here's my list... again :) Check out "If These Trees Could Talk" & "Amplifier"... seriously. Parabol/Parabola - Tool The Giving Tree - If These Trees Could Talk Interstellar or The Wave - Amplifier Seven Cities of Gold - Rush Heartstrings - Frost* Driven to Destruction - Riverside Barock Project - Twenty Years. Road of Bones - IQ
This is definitely a good time to put in another good word for Gazpacho - trust me, if you like Riverside, you’ll like them. In fact, they sort of sound like they’re *channeling* Gazpacho a few times on the new record. Highlights include Splendid Isolation, I’ve Been Walking (either part or both), and Emperor Bespoke, if you want something new and more upbeat. ... Sorry, I think this is the third time I’ve tried to push ‘em on you!
I second the Gazpacho suggestion. But if you want to be dragged into one of the most finest, haunting and emotional songs ever recorded by a Norwegian band, I suggest the song Dream Of Stone (studio version, they haven't any good live vids). It's long, but you'll never want it to end!
You are on the money with the meaning behind the meaning. The literal meaning is the day after an apocalyptic event and walking in the Wasteland, but obviously the loss and grief that goes with that, underneath it of course is the life meaning.
I've been checking the channel here daily, and to find you reacting to Lament was actually worth the wait. Saddens me to hear you'll be putting out videos less frequently. However, I wish you the best of luck as for what may ever the reason be. Also the usual tiny bitsy request, Can please react to Pain of Salvation's King of Loss. Thank you for everything :D
Great song. The soft parts of the song are so nice to listen to. Sounds to me like music taken from a fairytale movie or something like that. Good joice, Jim. Wouldn't forget to say: I love your way you comment your videos. Reminds me a little bit to Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull when you say: "see you on the other side".

Oh, well - as you say, life happens and as long as you're OK we'll be waiting with patience. Love to see your reactions and how you "feel" the music as much as you hear it! Piotr Grudzinski died on my birthday. To a die hard Riverside fan that was devastating day. It's still upsets me. He was amazing.

Best Riverside song!

Lunatic Soul's (Mariusz Duda) song A Thousand Shards of Heaven is phenomenal. It's classic! You should try that too, Jim!
A Thousand Shards of Heaven is my favorite LS/Duda song
Yes, it's pretty amazing, it seems that this guy turns everything he touches in pure gold.
