I really hope Rails does something like the trunk system that Hattons had. As an Australian, shipping anything from the UK is stupidly expensive, and I used to really like being able to buy things as they came into stock but ship them periodically in larger lots. This saved me a ton of money and I used this feature every time I bought with Hattons.
It requires a warehouse the size of the Hatton's location, which Rails doesn't have. Unfortunately, I don't expect to see a trunk service from any UK retailer anytime soon.
Huge congratulations on 150k subscribers Sam! It's great to see how much effort companies are putting into reviving Hattons. Shows how well they contributed to the industry...
As guy from across the pond it absolutely broke my heart that hattons closed... they were my go to for used loccos and had an amazing wishlist that let me know when one came in as well as took effort to test it and list any issues, either I've yet to find other places that give such good service or hattons was the best 😢 I'm sad to see them go but hope ROS does them proper holding the torch and update the listings of product and improve, but still my hat to you hattons ❤ you were the best in my opinion!!!
As someone who works in a smaller model railway shop, I can also agree that the Hattons Directory is really useful whenever we have a British loco and need to find out exactly what it is and at times, around what it's worth. And personally I do like using it to check and see what liveries and models all exist, it's truly a wonderful tool to figure out just what is out there. I do just wish we could still get a wishlist that notifies us when a pre-owned loco we want is available. And Rapido is being amazing as always I see. Great!
5:10 technically the EAR 59 class is the largest and powerful steam locomotive built in britain. Although for East African Railways the insane thing is that it was a narrow gauge locomotive.
Cheers Sam, that's great news about Hattons future with Rails of Sheffield. I was so sorry to see them close down but glad they now have a future. I'm glad jack's going to continue to! Jack & Dave used to do some interesting promotional videos on UA-cam for Hattons products. I hope Dave will be ok, too. Cheers for the model railway news mate. There's some lovely models coming out They all look great!👍
My word that yellow Jones Goods looks gorgeous! A fine homage to its days running rail tours in preservation! 👍 Now we need the GNSR 49 Gordon Highlander!
Awesome news about Hattons and can’t wait for Rapido’s new models! Also that Model Railway Guy has showed running samples of most of the upcoming Rapido models!
The fireless steam locomotives are what interest me the most, for one doesn't see those very often. Sure, their simplicity means that one could just print one, but not all of us have the money or space for a 3D printer and airbrush tools (nor are we all that great at painting by hand). I would love to make one for my H0n30 layout, though.
Got a 3D resin printer that made a mess n broke. Only $269 AUD, learning experience. Now I find out Westedge3D can print in colour. Learn to CAD, AI can help now/soon. Then send files to 3D printer company.
Hi Sam, Re: TT:120 HST. Both power cars require a decoder for DCC operation. However, IF you don't choose to use the HM7000 set up, the speaker connection is set up for the micro plug that Hornby use on their HM7000 range. I damaged both boards trying to install a normal sugar cube speaker! Thankfully, Hornby are sending me 2 replacement boards & 2 speakers, so my 2 ESU Lok Sound V5s will sound great. Keep up the great work. Boa
Its superb news that Rails of Sheffield will produce its own iteration of the Hattons database resource. Its hard to conceive how the high prices will sustain the hobby. I lost some of my much treasured models (stolen whilst in storage at a family members house), and whilst some can be replaced, others such as some obtained originally in the 1960's cannot.. Currently I have my eyes on a replacement Triang-Hornby Blue Pullman set from the 60's - the 'arris who stole my power car and dummy trailer plus other spurrious items. It will be joyful to re-obtain this item since it was a christmas present in 1968. It had a troublesome start since it wouldn't go at all. It turned out that a human hair had become wound round the commutator in the factory!!! But I loved this model since it was a train that my father had taken us on from St Pancras to Manchester. My search will continue to replace like for like since I plan to create a new layout. Ive decided that the new layout will be DCC and i suspect I'll have to re-engineer the old trains systems to cope with that - but I feel it would be worthwhile. I will rebuild my collection - it will take time - but I will do it - as for the 'arris that stole my stuff - well I will leave karma to sort them out whoever they are or were. Whilst I know I could replace the Blue Pullman with a more up to date iteration - a) I ain't paying them prices and b) it would seem totally wrong to replace the 19690's Triang version with the more recent one.
A day later this time Sam but we finally had a moment to enjoy your news. For us personally, Locomotion No. 1 really stands out, and H is open for pre-orders on their site. Very tempting! Märklin k-track can easily be reconfigured to accept opposing polarities via the rails as an isolated section, provided that no 3 rail stock can enter it as it would cause a short. Quite complicated but it can be done. We are most intrigued seeing wood grain this well simulated really. If actual execution is going to be that top notch, then wow 💓 We will just have to resist the temptation though hahah. Hopefully you will have a chance of testing the finished product. Cheerio.
The first UK model to use an E24 decoder (to my knowledge) is the Revolution Trains N guage class 59. The 59/0 is already in shops with the /1 and /2 following shortly. The forthcoming 66 is going to use the same decoders.
I have not been in the hobby for 40 years , but listening to your program here is charming and reminds me of myself when young , the HORNBEY model is wonderful , and the GARRETT is simply amazing , I hope they avoid using plastic in any of the rods / valve gear detail. HUSH - HUSH was beautiful too ... but oh the problems with that one. Well .. another swell show Sam.
Amazing! You know, I went to the annual London model railway festival today. I got my hands on a perfect condition J94, two nice wagons, and an LMS 2MT, all for only £105! Would recommend for anyone in London.
Glad to see that the directory will be saved, and look at that black five! The clearance between the frames and the bogie wheels is so good that it nearly looks EM. Shame that the era 1 locos still look off with thick 00 wheels, but you win some, you lose some. Thanks as always Sam!
I understand the Rspido factory had experience a year or two back producing a early 4-6-0 locomotive very similar to the Jones Goods , but to HO scale. Not from Canada and not sold by Rapido. A well received locomotive, so some good experience for them to make the Jones goods with perhaps more clearances being in OO scale making that easier.
Superb to have the Hattons directory back on line. this is a great deal of interesting work done, and that is great to see it is not lost. I WANT A FIRELESS ENGINE ! Rapido, you have a customer with me, and I guess I am not the only one. Not interested in the other engines, but nice to see them coming along. Special mention for the O1 in the "take that Hornby and Bachmann" department (GBP 200 for a SECR 0-6-0 tender engine, remember ?). Heljan... I'm in for the U1, but I am highly skeptical about the usual Heljan conception of their engines. The four ones I was keen to buy from them (class 35, 07 and 17, plus LMS Garrat) had some serious drawbacks in their conception that bars me from opening my wallet for them. I hope that it won't be the same with the U1. Dapol is still on it ! I'm not interested by dedicated wagons, but I can see that their commitment to stop the era of having the worst couplings on the market, and questionable wheelsets (I have to replace the ones of several milk tankers due to constant derailments, and have to do this on all the Fruit D I have in OO) is not a vain word. Sam, why not try the egg vans with their new couplings and wheels when available ? Hornby TT still in the race, good for them. I'm interested in the 88DS in BR green, next month maybe. Not bad their forthcoming locomotion. Black 5 incoming ! I'm in for one, and I think you will test her ASAP. Hornby enters German territory with their pricing of this one, and I hope they have done her at a German level of quality. I am happy with my two (yes, two !) 9F from them, hope they will confirm their trend of quality models. We'll see !
Dear Sam: Just to comment on the new Hornby Loco Coupling reliability is actually a BIG ISSUE! It is not that reliable compared to the older designs and if you have to be very careful with the coupling making sure that it is well-coupled anytime and if not running you have to decouple since the metal strips inside is very easy to get bent, which will cause your locos not to work! Replacement of the metal strips is difficult since you will need to send your locos to Hornby for repair. Thanks.
I'm really looking forward to the Rapido O1. I have one on order in the SR lined black livery It looks gorgeous. The new Hornby Black Five is sort of interesting. To be honest, the valve gear doesn't look to be much of an improvement on the version released twenty years ago. However, I'm very interested in the Caprotti version. As it's a Hornby website only option, I'm just going to have to suck it up and pay full price. Oh well... 🙂
Thanks for another News video - always worth watching! Unless I've missed it, there is a real gap in the Era 1 range - maybe you could fill it with a 3D printed item - a model of George Stephenson himself (who was not a stranger to the foot-plate) Look forward to your next video
Good news at last about Hattonss directory, but as said below Rails have one major problem in that at the mement they do not have the storage space to carry enough stock and offer a "Trunk" system of ordering. Perhaps if they also took over Hatton's facility in Widnes which is not far from where i live in Chester then it would open up a whole new world for them. We can only wait and see how it all works out, Hatton's will be missed in many ways.
Considering getting an E1 but I was hopeful we would of seen some painted samples, there is on exclusive to the IOW steam railway. I've never had a rapido train so I hope it's good
UK Met Office define Spring as 1st March-31st May. Whatever the start date, it is still wet and miserable outside, so we can spend more time with the layouts without feeling guilty and of course keep up with Sam's videos.
As for the plug connection tender draw. This was a feature invented by Life Like trains in 1997, it was very good but the only other manufacturer i knew off to date to use it was MTH in their HO line... but it didn't work great. I hope the British versions work fantastic as they did on the LL Proto 2000 locos
I've a few Hornby locos with it and it works very well. We'll have to see how robust it will be in the long term and I try not to use it too much with that in mind, but so far I really like it.
Love seeing these to see what’s coming out in OO. I have a random question: since you do a good few reviews on American engines have you considered doing news on American engine manufacturers? I think it’d be pretty neat but I’m not saying that it needs to be done
Hattons being like William Afton with “I Always Come Back!” (FNAF reference). Very informational news video today Sam! That new Black 5 has so many features. One question though would be if the lights would work on other locos, cause if they did I would buy it for the extra features!
Hi Sam. Any chance of you reviewing the old Hornby Dublo metal locomotives converted to 2 rail. Like Duchess of Montrose, Mallard or Bristol Castle please. Neville Taylor, Tasmania
Hi Sam I am currently in Bolton for a steam gala and the leander brittania and sir Nigel Gresley is there and I am there for my birthday and I bought a hornby LNER b12
The Hornby TT HST seems totally overpriced and even more so with DCC. And what I have found out Hornby have blanked off Australia as a shipping option. Weird because China is far closer to Australia Vs the UK.
I dont know who needs to know this but i beleive at the ally pally (definately at the NRM itself as thats where i got it) the ES1 is £100 :) Great update/report once again
Hi Sam. Recently gotten back into using my oo scale model train set. And was curious on which train maker you would recommend the most. And wondered if you’d ever do a review on the old Princess royal 4-6-2 duchess of Gloucester locomotive?
Decent video here Sam, not much news from me this month, had my cavalex 56s arrive and overall very good models, did have to use their customer service though as one of the blanking plates in one of them did burn out but their service is excellent, they posted a new blanking plate to me and the model is working again.
I will admit the directory was a good part of Hattons and great to see it back. Never used Hattons much for purchases tbh as had a bad experience with them.
I wonder when Rapido will give us more info on their BR Class 04 & USATC S160.. or will it be like the E4 where we will have to wait for sometime before anything is announced
I had a thought what if Bachmann made their own Thomas esque characters, they take one of their regular models, slap a face on it and there you go. I don't know if Mattel who own Thomas & Friends would yell at them if they did that. Because there's a lot of engine classes that don't have a Thomas character for their class, I just thought it would be neat if Bachmann did that.
They’re a fair few others who have done reviews of the 56 you know, for example look at class47peter or Dave at Dean Park model railway, 2 very good people on UA-cam who also do reviews, you don’t always need Sam to review something for you in order for you to make up your mind and don’t come back replying that you only want Sams review because what does watching one persons review give you, there are others out there who have review the 56s or any other models you may want, anyway back to the 56s not sure if you can get one now as they are sold out at pretty much everywhere that had them available, when I got my 2 BR blue ones back at the start of this month there were not many left, will have to hope for a second run of them
I really hope Rails does something like the trunk system that Hattons had. It requires a warehouse the size of the Hatton's location, which Rails doesn't have. Unfortunately, I don't expect to see a trunk service from any UK retailer anytime soon.
12:26 😊
Same here. Even if you could only hold items for a short time to order extra bits to be shipped along with them to reduce the awful
postage costs.
Agreed- as a U.S. modeler, the trunk service was absolutely invaluable.
Huge congratulations on 150k subscribers Sam!

Me too! Just can't wait :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I’ve got one on order in LBSCR Improved Engine Green! I don’t have a Terrier in the livery, so I’m super excited!!
Fantastic Sam, omg locomotion looks wonderful 🎉
hi Sam, great to see Jack back steering the ship on course, look forward to it
YUP ! SAM is on it !
You need to put a space between the s and T in your logo (top left) as it reads Sam strains!
No that was Constipated Colin on Sam's last review of the awful Hornby mail coach! 🤣
Amazing! You know, I went to the annual London model railway festival today. I got my hands on a perfect condition J94, two nice wagons, and an LMS 2MT, all for only £105! Would recommend for anyone in London.
Let's just hope that the HST sound effects are of the Valenta-powered examples!
!
Please say Hattons come back in some form!
Edit: HAHA! I was right!
Absolutely!! Good news for sure :D
@@SamsTrainsit's just the brand and some assets. The stuff like their production is long gone. I read that some of went to Rails themselves.
These new models from each manufacturer look amazing Sam. I hope you will review each and everyone of them on your channel.

Glass in the toplights of the original GW Toplight stock was hammered rather than frosted.
The Rapido fireless loco is an interesting project - ideal for the minimum space micro shunting layout which is all some of us have space for!
Yes, but you'll need to provide a "refueling" dock, and an industry to provide the steam - a power plant, or some such. The setup could get big.
True - maybe a lot of the industry etc, could be suggested on the backscene, or in low-relief? @@ReggieArford
Wow, that’s amazing❤😊
Quite excited for the new Rapido locomotives, only im still waiting on their S160 - which will be swiftly pre-ordered.
Please review cavalex class 56 Sam. Honestly, I think it will take your breath away!!
booster locos have already done that !
I’ll add my thoughts Sam needs a Cavalex 56 in his fleet
I'm really looking forward to the Rapido O1. I have one on order in the SR lined black livery It looks gorgeous.
The new Hornby Black Five is sort of interesting. To be honest, the valve gear doesn't look to be much of an improvement on the version released twenty years ago. Will the new folks take over the Hattons Originals models? I am disappointed I may never get a set of Genesis coaches.
Thanks for another News video - always worth watching! Unless I've missed it, there is a real gap in the Era 1 range - maybe you could fill it with a 3D printed item - a model of George Stephenson himself (who was not a stranger to the foot-plate)

Just got news that Hornbys P2 with steam generator is in and shipping looking forward to seeing that
Thank you once again, Sam. ❤

Thanks Sam as always, lots to look forward to. I can't justify a rake of toplights, but nonetheless looking forward to the review. Cheers.
The sound fitted fireless loco should be interesting. I would guess they sounded quite different to a steam engine.
There's a vid of one working on youtube.. honestly it sounds pretty dull haha.

Hi Sam could you look at so 009 narrow gauge stuff and also T gauge which is tiny. Thanks. God bless
There wasn't that many steam locomotive announced this month Sam, let's just hope that there will be more next month.

Nah not too much announced, but some nice updates!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Gonna love the new black 5 review I want one already

Great update/report once again
A very good update Sam 🙂🚂🚂🚂
Hi Sam. Recently gotten back into using my oo scale model train set. And was curious on which train maker you would recommend the most. And wondered if you’d ever do a review on the old Princess royal 4-6-2 duchess of Gloucester locomotive?
It would be great if you could add an international section for American and European model railways
I'm still sad about the end of Hattons.
Me too!!
Here's a good question, will Hatton's Genesis Coach lineup be continued under Rails of Sheffield?
Spring seems to be coming late this year, just like Hornby releases. It's also the same where I am. 🤣
hahaha good point!!
Decent video here Sam, not much news from me this month, had my cavalex 56s arrive and overall very good models, did have to use their customer service though as one of the blanking plates in one of them did burn out but their service is excellent, they posted a new blanking plate to me and the model is working again.
Thanks a lot David - that's good news! Glad their customer service is good too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Them Dapol wagon couplings seem to be drooping a little though..
So often couplings are, er, well, you know, the weakest link.
@roglaker9353 given they're on brewery wagons could it be brewers droop? 🤣
I just set the playback speed to 0.25 to see the Jones Goods loco running slowly, Sam sounds hilarious at that speed XDDDD
I will admit the directory was a good part of Hattons and great to see it back. Never used Hattons much for purchases tbh as had a bad experience with them.
I’m ready for the jones goods to release it’s something I’ve been waiting for a while also amazing video Sam 😃
WOW, wheels on new vans are "ERA correct !
I bought a new Ruston 88ds Rowntrees No.3 and it didn't work right out of the box :( luckly the one I swapped it for worked ok.
typical hornby,!
Just waiting on the 16" Hunslet from rapido as I ordered one and haven't heard anything since... 😐
I wonder when Rapido will give us more info on their BR Class 04 & USATC S160.. or will it be like the E4 where we will have to wait for sometime before anything is announced
Missed Cavalex announcements again. Also the black 5 working lights will surely be fixed, not moveable.
Hi Sam looking forward to your tt120 hst review as i need 2 sets for Acton Wells. caroline
Nice work on the video Sam I really like it
Thanks Dennis!
@@SamsTrains You're welcome Sam and have a good day
This news has somewhat cheered me up from my nana’s coma.
Awesome video Sam's trains 😊
Thanks Brian! :D
@@SamsTrains you're welcome Sam's trains
Sam could you review a nr class locomotive from Australian
What is the price of the Black Five?
I hope the Hornby Locomotion is as good as their CAD render.
They do look interesting but I'd also like to see a review first before paying out that kind of money.
I see that Rocket Railways (Coalville) and Top Slots n Trains (Fleetwood) have also permanently closed down this month.
I confirm for Top Slots'n'trains. Website down after weeks of zero stock available for Kato in N.
Brilliant video
Turn DOWN your screen intensity !
Sam for god sake add N gauge news to the channel!
Hattons lives on!
They sure do :D
Will the Hornby Black 5 have a diecast boiler?
I’m curious to know if you plan to review the cavalex 56, I’m very interested to see what you make of it
They’re a fair few others who have done reviews of the 56 you know, for example look at class47peter or Dave at Dean Park model railway, 2 very good people on UA-cam who also do reviews, you don’t always need Sam to review something for you in order for you to make up your mind and don’t come back replying that you only want Sams review because what does watching one persons review give you, there are others out there who have review the 56s or any other models you may want, anyway back to the 56s not sure if you can get one now as they are sold out at pretty much everywhere that had them available, when I got my 2 BR blue ones back at the start of this month there were not many left, will have to hope for a second run of them
True, I just enjoy watching sam@@davidstrains4910
Locomotion looks gorgeous 😍
She does! :D
