Great to see another reformed brother enjoying pipe tobacco! I struggled with it for a little bit, regarding it as sin, but I am changing my views now. We can enjoy what God gave us, in a proper and God honoring manor, of course!

Hi. I think one of the problems is that previous generations learned from older relatives but now many people, like myself, are having to start from scratch.
I was frankly on the verge of giving up, whereas if my Grandfather had still been here he would have taught me everything I needed to know. Lost knowledge sadly.
    Thank you for posting.

I quit smoking everything tobacco including dipping snuff and Chewing tobacco (I really liked Redman Chew) close to 30 years ago. I smoked cigarettes, Cigars and a Pipe. I smoked a pipe a lot and learned from my Dad a lot about pipe smoking. The over the counter pipe tobaccos like half and half or Cherry tobacco or were not generally good. The tobaccos that smell good in a room (and to others) is probably loaded with Vitrginia bright. Virginia has a bite. Borkhum Riff was a cavendish OTC blend that was mild as I remember. And I couldn’t tell you if these brands still exist. But the most pleasing to me was a heavy English Latakia blend and while the smoke wasn’t that pleasing to others in a room it was pleasing to me. Why I don’t know. The Latakia mixed with Virginia produced a heavy pleasing smoke. From all the smoking I did I never noticed any health problems except a tendency to get ulcers in my gums but I quit when I was in my 40’s. I’m in my 70’s now and have been thinking about starting the pipe again which I nostalgically miss. My biggest fear is that it would lead to cigarette smoking again which I’m more averse to because of the exorbitant cost. I wish to tell you and as you can see in the general population obesity is more of a problem than tobacco smoking ever will be. The prevalence of heavy mostly cigarette smoking in the past did cause a lot of early death. But obesity causing so many metabolic disorders these days that it’s the real health problem and gives the former smoking a run for the money at least in quality of life issues. So enjoy a good blend in your pipe and smoke moderately.
Among my age group type two diabetes is endemic, a boon to pharma with drugs like metformin and Lipitor. Giving up sugar and carbs alone will make you more healthy than worrying about any health issues caused by moderate pipe smoking.

I've been learning everything from videos here on UA-cam. My grandfather was a pipe smoker but sadly he died when I was very little so I was never able to get interested in pipe smoking and learn from him. Remembering and loving the smell of his tobacco and watching him smoke his pipes as a kid is what got me into pipe smoking. We are still going through my grand parents things to try and find my grandfather's pipe so I can have them. One of my first pipes I bought was one that was a close to the same pipe as what my grandfather had

When I worked in two different smoke shops back in the day, we were always tinkering with the blends we recommended to noobs. Most often burley based, the trick was to get enough flavor in to keep it from being bland and boring but keep the heat down as well. Surprisingly, the most successful blends had a small percentage of Latakia.

My first english was nightcap. And it absolutely was love at first taste. I think the fact that im more of a cigar smoker helped with that love as a full flavor full body lover. But right now i am enjoying Dan Tobacco Old Ironsides and absolutely loving it. So different than night cap for sure.

I started on Smokers Value Black Cavendish and Borkum Riff Cherry Liqueur which made me a pipe smoker since I was either twenty one or twenty two which then was fourteen years ago and since then have had a lof of pipes including Clay Pipes from Germany and a few corn cob pipes and now I have an Italian Granada Briar Pipe and I like all pipe tobacco.

Country Squire "Old Toby" is my favorite aromatic, so far.... I was leery of the Green Dragon, but now I will add some to my next order. Thanks.

  • @sectureverothoughtcriminal7734

I started with "OTC" Tobaccos like Capt Black, Borkum Riff, Half and Half...a local smoke shop happened to sell pipe tobacco by the ounce...then I found online, and a better local brick and mortar. I now prefer English and Balkan blends...getting into plug, cakes...flakes...
It is a wonderful hobby, don't forget that the pipe in which you smoke a certain tobacco makes a HUGE difference. I find some more enjoyable in a corn cob, others in briar...then the style of pipe! wow, there is so much to learn...but don't be intimidated. Pipe smoking is for the patient person.

That’s exactly what I’ve been doing! lol Can’t watch enough of them! I started with a MM Legend just to days ago. I smoked Captain Black because that’s what my dad smoked when I was young and I liked the smell of it, and some guys recommended it as a good starter tobacco. My second smoke was a local B&M blend, and was not as good, but I think it’s because I don’t realize you supposed to change out those paper filters in the stem. I think it might have been still wet from the previous smoke. Much to learn…

Some great choices there Wilson. I especially like HH Burley Flake and Stokkebye LNF.
A couple I have referred to new pipesters would be Cary Grant's blend from Kramer's, Tashkent from Peretti and Stokkebye English Oriental Supreme. As far as an introduction to English/Oriental blends, these are favorites of mine.
Aromatics I would say Rattray's Bagpiper's Dream and MacBaren's Vanilla Roll Cake.
Great job as usual Wilson, be well.

Very good recommendations! My general thoughts on aromatics: I also don't like the goopy blends. I've found a good way to counteract that is to look for aromatics with more than one type of leaf (ie not just Cavendish). In my opinion the other leaves tend to fill out (and dry!) the blend. In addition to the country squires blends, I really like Russ' Blends (from pipes and cigars). One I recommend is Bing Cherry: a Cavendish and Virginia aromatic

Have been smoking a pipe for over 30 years. Started with a cheap briar and Captain Black original. I personally think new smokers should start with a conger blend until they learn the basics, lighting, smoking, and cleaning thier pipes. After this they can begin to explore the wide variety of choices we have today. Just my personal opinion. Have only been trying all different blends for the last few years. Have found out dark fired is not one of my favorites. DO so enjoy Early Morning Pipe and Night Cap...think they both pair well with my coffee. Have been enjoying many bulk blends from Cornnell&Diehl, Lane, and Sutliff tobaccos. Think your videos are great. THANK YOU!!!

Hi Wilson, I have just started watching your videos, and I find them one of the best tutorials I've come across. They are detailed and relaxing to follow.
I was just wondering if you could do a Live where people can real-life comment and ask questions as I am still having a lot of issues with keeping it lit, ash tasting, and several other things.
I saw you have done videos on these things, and I have watched them, but if you do have time, a Live could help me and possibly others too by any questions they need answering. I live in Gmt+8 (Australia time) I would normally just keep trying my best without bothering you but a 50g bag of tobacco here can cost from 60 to 100 dollars and burning through that while starting is 😅.
If you do decide to do one, that would be great, and I would love to look forward to it.
    Cheers

My list for broad exposure to different types of pipe tobacco has a couple of similar suggestions to this video. If I may share...
    - GL Pease Chelsea Morning: Latakia with orientals
    - GL Pease Odyssey: latakia bomb
    - Sillem Black: latakia aromatic
    - John Middleton Carter Hall: inexpensive OTC, but a tasty light burley baccy nevertheless
    - John Patton Storm Front: Burley with some cigar leaf
    - MacBaren Old Dark Fired: Strong, but delicious dark fired burley
    - Esoterica Stonehaven: Hard to find virgina/burley
    - Rattray Marlin Flake: Virginia/perique with cavendish. This is my regular smoke.
    - 1Q: another cheap but tasty blend, this is among the better large production aromatics
    - Gawith and Hoggarth Rum Flake: My favorite option for exposure to Lakeland tobacco

What's your take on the chemicals that might be in some tobaccos? I find that some companies tent to make cheap tobaccos that end up being really popular since they are not expensive. Just like food, one needs to do their research prior to buying tobacco blends.

    • @TheSpurgeonPiper
      @TheSpurgeonPiper  6 місяців тому +1

Pipe tobacco involves very little additives and if there are any, they are food grade (liquor, cherry extract, chocolate, vanilla).
Some aromatic tobacco makers will add a component to keep the blend moist (glycol) but that's the extent of it.

I've been at this since mid January, so two months, and I've learned I do not enjoy aromatic blends. They smell great in the tin, but leave me very disappointed while smoking it. Some, so-called, mild aromatics aren't so bad. Missouri Meerschaum's Great Dane being one of 7 aromatics (out of 27 I own) I have tried. I do have twenty more aromatics, I've ordered in the past two months, that I need to get through. I will do so sparingly of course, and it will take a good amount of time to rid myself of all 27 aromatics I own. So to beginners, I would suggest not "stocking up" on any blend until reaching a personal knowledge of what you truly enjoy and know you will smoke on a daily...and what you might enjoy from time to time. Stick with buying small amounts of Bulk or the smallest of tins. Heck, you may enjoy nothing but aromatics. BTW, and FYI, I do not see Green Dragon nor Old Toby on The Country Squire site.

A friend offered me a bowlfull of his mildest pipe tobacco some years ago, and I enjoyed it. But, I could still taste stale smoke the next morning, so I walked away from pipe smoking. I still think about it, 'though and I might try cautiously again. Any thoughts? Broad question, I know. Thanks!

Dumbest question ever: in my town there are many small-chain tobacco stores. If they have any pipe products at all its in larger factory looking bags. I'd like to know: would that product be more highly processed with bad additives in it? Likened to cigarettes vs cigars, I'd like to try more natural "organic" pipe tobacco.

    • @TheSpurgeonPiper
      @TheSpurgeonPiper  6 місяців тому +1

Not a dumb question at all. Those blends wouldn't have any additives likened to cigarettes but most blends that you described are aromatic blends that have food safe preservatives that keep them moist. But again, they wouldn't have anything extra that would be greatly concerning.
