I bought my 101 new in a BX in Germany in 1972 and it is still the workhorse it was then. Best camera I ever owned and I have owned some nice Nikons. Fun memories. Nice to see it is still being appreciated by a young new generation of enthusiasts.

Took my 101 in for a clean & lub a few weeks ago. He also put in a small diode to drop the battery voltage down by about 0.3v. Since you can't get the original mercury batteries any more you have to use either alkaline of silver batteries. These are slightly higher voltage so the meter exposure is off by a stop or two. Its working well now.
I have had mine for over 20 years. Dumped all my DSL gear (about $10k) and kept my Minolta 101 and Mamiya 645 with some prime lenses. You can beat muggers to death with these, wipe the lens and use the camera to take shots of the corpse !

Nice vid. Rummaged thru the garage recently and found my dad's old minolta srt 101. It's oddly satisfying to be looking thru the same camera lens he did over 40yrs ago. And it ultimately brought me to this vid. I'm still learning about aperture, ISO and shutter speed settings. Shooting with film is teaching me to use proper technique, patience and timing. So different from my Nikon DSLR.

Great video. Actually I don't think Minolta ever made a bad camera, on the contrary - for the most part they have been true pioneers with a lot of their cameras, like the first integrated auto-focus SLR (the Minolta 7000), among many other firsts (the first ever auto-focus camera being the Konica C35). For example, it took couple of more years for Canon to figure the auto focus out... And after the merge, the Konica-Minolta 5D and 7D gave the ingenious technologies that lead to the current Sony Alpha domination in the digital camera market (like the in-camera stabilization and AF motor). You can still mount an 80s Minolta lens to the latest Sony A99 II camera and even the AF will work!!! That's what it means to be ahead of your time... Minolta is boss, too bad they never received the recognition they trully deserve.

I love mechanical cameras! It’s a great way to learn photography and shoot no matter what! I was raised with those things and they’ve.served me well over the years! I’ve shot Yashica, Nikon, Canon & a number of medium format mechanicals. When the apocalypse comes, you won’t be able to shoot digital, so get familiar with mechanical/manual cameras if you want to record that Event! ;-)

Minolta was always a wee bit ahead of the curve in terms of technology. With the SRT 101, with CLC metering, which in layman's terms was very basic Matrix Metereing before Nikon started messing around with the concept in the 1980s. The XK was a pro body light years ahead of the Nikon F2 and Canon F-1 in the mid 1970s packing technology, pity they are hard to come by, stupid expensive and good luck finding someone to work on it. To me Minolta hit the sweet spot with the XE-7 and the XD-11 that replaced it. That said you wouldn't have either camera, or the Sony A7 series (Sony bought the camera business off Konica-Minolta) today if it weren't for the SRT-101.

Even better is the 102 (or 303 in Europe). They took the 101 and made it more professional centred with a display of the apertures in the viewfinder, they reworked the winding mechanism to allow for double exposures, and, most importantly, added a hotshoe.

Even better, the 102. The flagship SRT. You got full information display in the viewfinder, upgraded internal mechanics, slightly more reliable lightmeter, and other small changes.

    • @skunkwerx9674
      @skunkwerx9674 2 роки тому

I'd disagree considering they removed the mirror lockup on those versus the 101, the 101 was marketed as their flagship until the 102 came out. The 101 and 102 are identical on paper, except the 102 is without MLU, and it has a hotshoe. Seems like a downgrade at the time considering most flashes at the time were FP anyways, and a flagship model without MLU doesn't make much sense.

It's not a Minolta, but I did just recently get my first ever mechanical-shutter camera, an Olympus 35RC rangefinder, and it definitely has a similarly satisfying look and feel and I am getting a better feel for guesstimating exposure without a meter. Maybe look around for some HiMatics which were the Minolta equivalent.

I love my SRT-101. Bought it when I was first married in 72 and just sent it out to have it cleaned and updated for the new 1.5 volt battery. They also ajusted the shutter to within tolerance. After 50 years just a little bit out of tolerance. I consider it worth the 192.00 for cleaning, lube, and update plus shiping. Good camera, witll start using the film again. Yea!!

If people are starting out it may be a good first camera for the price. Personally unless I find a mint one for really good price, I don't want to invest in another camera system, I already have Canon, Nikon, and Pentax bodies and lenses. From watching when you started out, your definitely looking and sounding more confident, which is great to see, hoping I can follow in your foot steps and grow my confidence. Great watch and very informative 😊👍

I just bought one with the 58 1.4 for a little under $50USD. Not the steal others have found, but a good price for a solid body and a beautiful lens. Now I just need an XD, and I'll have four successive generations of Minolta (currently have an SRT-101, X-E5, and X700.)

i just got one. with a 58mm f1.4 everything still work on stoked $9 AUD warning
Dont touch the selftimer it will jam up the shutter if it does then try this *****Chances are this is just some old grease that got sticky...
This is usually easy to fix, although it takes time.
Usually the lever, even when stuck, does move, but on a very short distance. maybe half the way
Try to push the lever counter clockwise (camera body facing you) as far as possible, and then release the button.
The lever should advance just a tiny little bit more . Then push it again (CCW always), doing this here and there (pushing the selftimer as far as you CCW restart and and pushing the button to start the count down will get stuck half way then stop start over again and help it back to where it get stuck and pushing the release the button. you will slight sounds when pushing the shut the bottom.
Repeat this as long as necessary! it might take up to a hundred repetition to get the self time to work...
This method is therefore time consuming, but usually works great
trust just so it solve it for me.

I've been selling a lot of Minolta gear of late but I'm keeping both of my black bodies, an SRT201 and an XD11 with motor drive. I'm also into A mount Sony DSLR if only to utilize 5 superb Minolta AF lenses. Minolta's Rokkor line is great glass so I'm still using MD-MC lenses on Sony a850 in manual mode with Fotodiox adaptors. Sony would have no particular interest for me at all except for it's acquired Minolta legacy.

    102 is better. Four reasons:
    1. Full information viewfinder - lens aperture and selected shutter speed are shown in the viewfinder display.
    2. Split image rangefinder added.
    3. Multiple-exposure capability without the need to hold the film rewind knob.
    4. Cold flash shoe was replaced by a hot shoe

“Keep it Minolta” 😂. Yo, dope video, fam. I own a Minolta SRT-102 with a 28mm Celtic f/2.8 (my favorite one), 50mm Rokkor f/1.7, and a telephoto lens that I don’t remember the magnification of. I’d love to share the images that I’ve created on it with you and the #MinoltaGang.

I'm also brand loyal to Minolta and Canon only. I only own a few other brands, such as an Argus 75 TLR, Polaroid One Step Flash, very rare Olympus Stylus Epic Limited, and an Instax 90.

Sun and D-970 ayyyye that’s wassup! If you had to choose between the two, you can have ANY camera from both manufacturers. Who would you go with? Canon or Minolta? 😏

KingJvpes I would go with Minolta. I love the brand as my Minolta Alpha 9 never disappoints me with the fastest autofocus slr I've ever owned, or the x-700 for it's great performance and a legendary slr, and my XL-400 super 8 movie camera that gave me great memories to play on my projector.

Minolta srT303 / 303b is a tad better model - you can actually see your aperture value in the viewfinder 😁
I still have my dad's Minolta srT303b which still rocks after 45 yrs without any CLE !!! Even light meter still works.
However that said, it's really hard to find batteries for it these days...

Mainly use my x370 but I have another and a x700 for a back up. Overtime I learned how to expose without a meter and I hate buying batteries for these things so I just bought a set 101, 102, and 201 bundle for $50 🤘 #minoltagang

Battery dies out? You can use hearing aid batteries for this beast. Let me know if you need to know which ones I use. Nice vid btw!🤓

My dad's Minolta srT 303b is still running. After 45 years or so. No service, no CLA, nothing. It simply keeps on running...

You are so right I picked up one and it had the 50mm 1.7 and I really do like it. Needs a little cleaning, but working. Bought a 75-200mm lens for cheap and I can't wait to put it out there in use.

Anthony Weekes the 50mm 1.7 is super sharp! And that 75-200 sounds like a beast Man! Have fun with it haha
