As a former jeweler, these are great tips! Good job! Just one other tip when cleaning jewelry, be careful using certain chemicals on gemstones, some gems are more delicate than others such as emeralds and pearls, they can be damaged by harsh/strong chemicals.

Hi Melissa. The only jewelry I keep on for days is small gold studs, which I wear to keep my piercing holes open and healthy. I almost always remove my diamond studs after each wear, and I always remove my necklaces after wearing them, and my rings when I clean, cook, or go to bed. Thanks for all your videos--I've spent the early morning binge-watching!

As someone who used to make sterling silver jewelry, your body chemistry can also tarnish your silver, mine does it, my husband's does not! If you keep silver in a ziploc baggie without air it will stay tarnish free longer than in open air and you can buy antitarnish lined jewelry boxes and you 100% do NOT need oil to untie knots but pins or needles do help, as does a magnifying glass of the chain is tiny

My jewellery regime is take it all off, bar wedding ring, when I get home for the day, unless expecting visitors. Thank you for this info again. The tip at the end is really helpful. (I just wear the same gold for months, sometimes years). A very good tip is to definitely check prongs on settings, if you're cleaning with cloths especially, also chain clasps as they do wear if removed often. The other tip I have (I trade in vintage silver Jewely and cutlery, some of it very valuable and is stored in a safe. Pop a few silica gel bags (the little ones you get in vitamin bottles) amongst your jewelry to keep moisture out. In my safe are a couple of big ones (also amongst the silver cutlery), you get the bigger ones in shoe boxes of shoes you buy eyc., you also get these packets in foodstuff like rusks etc to keep moisture out, I never discard them, I just add them to my lined cutlery drawer. Also, collectable cutlery with the porcelain at the tips, and pléase... the type of silver cutlery with bone handles should not be immersed and left is such hot water as it loosens that porcelain as glue is involved and the bone is destroyed (experience speaking!). I still add a few drops of Dawn to your first mixture, it degreases and makes the water 'softer', if that makes sense, I then rinse and polish. Everything I mentioned here is from learning the hard way, I hope it helps. Greetings from still your most loyal supporter in South Africa 🇿🇦🦋

@@Anamarie157 I inherited the most beautiful pieces from my mom as well, I clean them ónly with the lukewarm water with a toddler soft toothbrush, dipped in a drop of Johnson’s baby shampoo in circular motions. Lay a towel out, to the tops of items, then bottom in your hand, rinse and lay on the towel. DAB them dry with an old t-shirt and lay tem on the towel on a dry side. Use your hairdryer (not hot!) and air dry each piece while turning it in your hand, leaving no moisture. Store with silica gel packets in the bottom, away from your jewelry. I wear especially the broaches like now during winter on my silk scarves, and check the roll-clasps/pins before putting it away. I hope this helps. 🦋🇿🇦

    • @jasperordrup
      @jasperordrup Рік тому +2

If it's real old original pearl's, start wearing them regularly and they need touching your skin. So you can wear it under your clothes, without anyone seeing them, if they don't look good. After awhile, they will "wake up" and being beautiful again.
You can get them professionally rewired on a new string and make each pearl get a double knot, so if the string brakes, only one pearl will get lose.

    Here's a tip I got from a Jeweler.
I do it weekly and my rings are Brand New after each Bath!!
I put about ⅓ of a coffee cup of
Connoisseur's Liquid Dip Jewelry Cleaner, the one in the Red Packaging, in the microwave for about 40 seconds.
Place it on the counter and THEN (Don't Microwave your Jewelry!!)
Place my rings in it for 3-4 minutes.
Brush all the sides with the little black brush that comes inculded in the container, engravings, stones, etchings and crevices, Including underneath the stones and then
Rinse them under Very Hot tap water for a few seconds.
Lay them flat on a Dish towel then fold the towel over each one, one at a time and
Sticking my finger draped towel through the ring, I wrap the rest of the towel around it and in a gentle motion, squeeze slightly and it's dry.
Place it in an open ring box over night JIC there's any left over moisture.
There is No comparison between heating the solution and using it straight from the jar.
I no longer bring them for a professional cleaning any longer,
    I don't have to!
These look just as good or better!!!

And also put your jewelry in individual small plastic bags and you won’t have to clean them so often. It works!

This was so helpful! One question: any suggestions for cleaning pearls? I have a piece of silver/pearl jewelry that needs cleaning, but I’m worried that the process of cleaning the silver would be too hard on the pearls. Also curious about the best way to clean a pearl necklace that is strung on thread.

Check with a jeweler first before using my tip. But I was told by a jewelry store that Dawn dish soap is gentle enough if you dilute it well with water. I bought a pair of silver and pearl earrings at an auction and I wanted to clean them up. I'm not sure how that applies to pearls strung on a thread though.

Hi there, pearls should be stored in an air tight jewelry box if possible, and i clean mine by wiping them after use with soft cloth only. I also never wear them on the pool or showering bec of soap and shampoo chemicals especially if you have salt water pearls.

Gemmologist here... For pearls, after each wearing, remove them and wipe clean with slightly damp soft cloth gently. Then place the pearl necklace back in its original box when dry. They shd not be stored in a very dry environment with very low humidity cos the pearls will dry out eventually if you plan to pass it down as an heirloom, just normal humidity is fine. You can take it out from time to time to just wipe them with soft damp cloth to prevent drying out. If the strung pearl necklace gets wet, just lay it out to dry on a flat surface, not under direct sun of course, do not hang to dry it as it will stretch out the string. As for the silver clasp, you can get the polish cloth for silver (normally can get at jewellers), just polish the clasp only.

Try a few drops of ammonia and water to get your diamonds sparkly! Recommended by Tiffanys 🥂

"Hotdog size fingers" 😂 I wear the same jewelry 95% of the time so for the items I don't wear often, I store them in small craft baggies. The silver doesn't tarnish. It works great for keeping earrings pared up as well.

What about a silver charm with a pearl inset? I found it in the dirt stepped on and covered in dirt. the silver came clean, but the pearl is still dirty

Nice, one cleaning hack that I don't need to use, as I totally don't care for jewelry. 😃
