My husband and I just recently purchased a new home and have been having a hard time choosing a security system for our new home. Your video definitely cleared up many questions that we had and even answered some we didn’t know we had. You were so much more helpful then some of the employees we questioned in the store.
Looks like a great security camera.I especially like the fact its wireless, rechargeable batteries and the fact that you can get a solar panel to add to its rechargeable feature. Excellent video.
Sadly no. However I did talk to Arlo about this. They said the delay is mostly do to the fact that the app has to pull most of its data from the cloud. They are working on an app update that will allow us to bypass the cloud and access the local data on the base station instead. Now they didn’t say this but, I’m hoping that will improve app load times over all their hardware.
@@SteveDOES is there a way to disable some/all of the smart features so we can faster notifications of any motion? I'd like to be able to set my activity zone and see whatever happens in that zone without all the delayed processing then getting a 10 sec notification delay.
@@willg6997 I asked Arlo the same thing because i know some people might prefer faster notifications to actual person detection. As of 6 months ago they said it wasn't an option and it still isn't. BUT i wonder when my 1 year Smart subscription plan ends and i no longer have person detection if the notifications would be much faster. I should know in late January.
I'm sure most potential buyers are looking over and trying to decide which upgrade to get, the Ultra or the Pro 3. After going over everything I believe the Pro 3 will be the better option for me. 2 deciding factors, you have to pay extra for the Ultra 4K. Per Arlo website, cloud storage of 4K resolution video clips requires add-on subscription ($2 per camera) above the normal smart plan price. Also 4K streaming requires the Arlo app and Ultra camera to be on the same local network. I believe that means you probably have to be at home to view actual 4K footage. Steve I'm sure you probably covered this but with Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, just wanted to make people aware just in case they were on the fence about the two cameras.
When you say you plugged in an external hard drive to back up your bay station would you even need a subscription to save your footage? I have Arlo pro 2 Cameras
I was wondering the same thing. I would think it wouldn't be necessary to have the subscription if you're backing everything up to an external hard drive.. however I am not sure if some of the alert features are accessible without the subscription.
If you want the special features like Advanced Object detection, Package detection, activity zones and intelligent alerts then you will need to get the subscription.
Thanks for comparing these three camera systems. I've been going back and forth between the 3 and Ultra, but thanks to your video I believe the Ultra is definitely better for my needs.
Been researching camera systems lately to update my existing one, and because of the weird angles and obstructions i have at home wireless cameras are at the top of my list. This review has definitely helped me put arlo at the top of my list.
I am looking for the camera with the best (furthest and clearest) night vision when the spotlight is off..still deciding. Thank you for the video comparisons.
Like the pro3 for a better entry door camera with the spot light - thinking of adding to my 4 camera arlo Pro2 setup. Not sure I want to pay for the required video service.
Thank you for the excellent review. I have the Pro 2 and have been happy with the audio and color. My audio seems to be much stronger than that shown in your presentation. The features of the Ultra have me longing to upgrade. The main feature is the built in spot light and the charging port. They are outstanding.
I have 5 camera s also would like more but dont want a monthly cost. Like the cameras. Do you know of any way of getting more cameras without monthly cost? Thank you
I just spoke to ARLO support and they said the 7 days of cloud storage for free comes with all systems to include the 3. They say you just do not have access to advanced features. I am hoping they told me correctly :)
Great video! I liked how you took the time to show us all 3cameras views. Your videos are every descriptive, which makes it easy to follow and understand and not loose interest. I watched it from beginning to end. I subscribed and hit the bell notifications to all your videos and commented. I was looking to buy either of those cameras, and with what I saw from your video and the one that fits my need is the Pro 3. Thanks again. GREAT VIDEO!
From my experience that depends on your area. I'm in a VERY dense neighborhood with WiFi singles bouncing all over. I can get about 100'-150'. I had a subscriber test and they said they could get about 400' in a rural area. Line of site with the base will also need to be considered. The more walls in the way, and what's in those walls, the lower the distance.
From a privacy standpoint, the Arlo is a VASTLY better option. Unless you trust Amazon (Ring) or Google (Nest). I personally will not let either of those companies record my family.
We just moved to an area with lots of dangerous wildlife in the mountains just above us. We are looking for a wireless camera system that can help us see if anything is in our yard before our children play outside. Thank you for the time you took to make this informative video comparison. We live in Northern Montana, and are considering either the Ultra or Pro 3 models.
Thank you for this video. I was all set to return my Arlo Pro 3 and get a Pro 2 instead. the main reason was because of the 7 days free versus the 30 day paid subscription. After watching your video, the improvements that you showed are worth the extra money. All the other reviews only "Talk" about how the 3 is "Mildly" better image quality but not "worth" the extra cost. Your review makes there improvements clear and I will be keeping my 3 and maybe even opting for an Ultra to add to my system. I also love that you included talk about the base. Something nobody else has done. Thank you so much for this excellent video which I saw on Amazon when looking at Arlo Pro 2's.
Currently working with the Arlo Pro 2 and it performs well and until some of the prices of the newer Alro camera systems come down in price - I can still recommend the Pro 2. Audio is the biggest difference. Love the new charging port on the Pro 3 - that is a great idea - thanks for the information.
Thanks for the comparison it really helped. When I first looked on Arlo’s website, I wanted the Arlo Pro 3. But I wanted an accurate comparison before buying. Great job!
Great video, Thanks - I do need your help with missing topics: Wireless Range, how far can a camera be away from the base (i.e. camera outside of the garage with 4 walls and 130 feet from the base unite, will the camera function normally? 2nd, how long doe the battery last when motion detection is on.
Steve, Question for you: You mentioned in the video that you were able to hook up the Arlo Ultra to the Arlo Pro 3 base (since the Pro 3 base has a USB port for a dedicated external hard drive). Are you able to get 4k footage from the Arlo Ultra camera using the Pro 3 base or are all the cameras 2k including the Ultra? Thank you for answering and thank you for your amazingly detailed and entertaining videos.
Yes, I strictly use the Pro3 base now. If you’re on the fence I recommend getting the Pro3 kit and then adding on an Ultra camera in the critical spots.
Just recently purchased the Arlo ultra. Waiting to receive it. Very excited. Heard the hub is sometimes hard to sync to. Curious if you have had that problem.
Great comparison video. Thank you. I currently own an Arlo Pro 2 system and have great difficulty with motion being detected directly in front of the cameras. The cameras must be positioned to detect motion on the peripheral vs direct on. Motion is better detected on the sides of the viewable images. What are your thoughts on the Pro 3 and Ultra for motion detection? Which is better in your opinion? Are either much improved over the Pro 2?
Good job on doing the comparisons. We have had our Arlo Pro for several years and have been pleased. Did notice in your video that Ultra was definitely better than the other two. Will be sharing your video on Facebook. Have several people on the fence on what to buy. This will definitely help them make a decision. Thanks!!
Per the Arlo web site, the Pro 3 has a 160 degree field of view vs. the 130 of the Pro 2. In your comparison on your back patio, the two seem to have nearly identical fields of view?
Just purchased the Pro 3 with two cameras. Easy to sync cameras with base. The one issue I had was the magnetic mount has a very small screw for mounting.
Definitely see the difference in all 3 cams when compared. Recently bought a pro 3 add on and put it on my pro system. Ultra would be fantastic to own but you MUST have some kind of subscription to watch videos. Ultra system is way out of most people's price range IMO, so having to pay for extras is not realistic to my budget. Will say that pro 3 when using zoom is still very good with resolution, and can distinguish car tag numbers very well. Did a lot of research before actually buying my system, but then things changed so fast and maybe wish I had waited a little longer to buy. My original purchase was pro that include 3 cams and 3 security lights for close to $400 which I thought was a pretty good deal from HSN. Another note for anyone who is curious, pro 3 is backwards compatible with regular pro base. I made sure before buying. Thanks for the video and the incredible opportunity to maybe get an upgrade!
Just curious (having not read any other comments yet). If the arlo 3 has 'a lot of metal in the back' why couldn't you mount a magnet and then put the arlo 3 up?
So I noticed on the night vision test that on the pro3 and Ultra we can see the lights in the background. Is that because of the range of the cameras or just the angle you have them set?
Great video Steve, you answered all my questions. Looking to buy the Arlo pro 3. I hear you have to charge the battery every 6 months?? Do I have to take the camera down every time I want to charge it? Thanks!
Hey Matt, glad to hear that you liked the video. You will need to either take the camera down or get a cable up to the camera for a few hours to charge it. Some other options are to get a stand alone battery charger. This way you can pop out the battery and leave the camera up or get the solar panel chargers. I did a video on the Arlo solar charger if you want to check it out.
You may have mentioned it but will the Pro 3 work with the Pro base station and also how good are any of the versions at detecting small creatures like rodents?
I've been a Arlo user for almost 5 yrs. I just upgraded to the pro2. Im happy with how the cameras perform for my setup. The night vision could be better and not be so blurry when trying to see a persons face.
Thanks for the comparison, I've been rocking 6 Arlo Pro's since they came out. I didn't pay much attention to any of the newer iterations but they are truly superior, especially that color night vision!
Found your video because I am looking to purchase an Arlo wireless camera system for my parents. I currently have Arlo Pro 2 and love(d) it until I saw your video. I've enjoyed the Arlo Pro 2 and had no issues with it at all. However, I am now, thinking of giving parents my Arlo Pro 2 (5 cameras) and purchasing the Arlo Ultra - loved the quality and especially the sound. Thank you for displaying all three of these cameras side by side for the comparison! The Arlo Pro 3 looks great too and I especially love the recharge method on it. You didn't show how the Arlo Ultra charges - assuming it charges the same way the Arlo Pro 3 does? Thanks again for the video
Isnt the Pro 3 requiring a fee after a certain time or camera does not work? Im reading some reviews on Amazon and lots of people stating this. The Pro 2 doesnt need it, so seems like a tradeoff for quality vs bait and switch; just for functionality.
The thing I care the most about is if there is any difference between them when it comes to wireless connectivity back to the base station? Does the Ultra communicate faster/better and at longer range than the other models???
Does the CVR feature still require subscription? If so; with the “No Subscription” feature, how long does it record footage locally? Does this mean, I can look back at footage recorded within that week, erase the files (to clear space) & then record again the following week?
I’ve been so confused on which outdoor security cameras to buy for my new townhouse from which manufacturer and what model from them. I have the Arlo Ultra saved in my Amazon account but keep doing more research to see what else I could get. Stumbled across your video on UA-cam about the Arlo Pro 3 and now I’m back to square one on the right one to get, really like the Pro3 but the price is a little steep for a two camera system (need one camera for the back and one for the front). How does this compare to the Nest security system?
I’ve shied away from Nest because there is a required cloud subscription of $15 a month per camera. Arlo is my preference but the Eufy cam E is a great option too and that does not require a subscription.
So I have a specific purpose question. My desire is to keep deer and smaller animals(rabbits, racoons, etc) out of my vegetable garden). Good size garden 100/100 feet. I know that Arlo has a siren device(or perhaps a frequency setting that would deter the critters and not wake our neighbor) and possibly an activated spotlight? Critters can destroy a good crop overnight. Is this something that Arlo system could do to stop this destruction to my garden or is there something better? Already have Arlo for home security.
Have the Pro 2 system running with to cameras. Interested in possibly upgrading/adding a Pro 3 camera or two. Are the Pro 3 cameras compatible with the Pro 2 basestation, or would I have to upgrade everything?
Great comparison video. Was debating whether to get an Arlo Pro 3 or the eufy. I would also love to see you do a video on the new Arlo Video Doorbell. Thanks.

Can u record on the hard drive directly without subscribing to the Arlo monthly subscription? What is your thoughts on the solar panel for the Arlo pro 3
there is a pretty noticeable difference in quality between the Ultra and the Pro 2 and 3, especially in audio. I was never really sold on Arlo for the price point considering the quality you were getting, it seems they have fixed all the problems with the ultra and I'm impressed from what I've seen
This is the most thorough comparative review I've ever seen. You should be proud.

Already have Arlo for home security.
overall thoughts of the ultra vs the pro 3 what system do you like better
I’m thinking of the Pro3, what about zooming in to read a license plate on the Pro3 vs. the Ultra?
Have the Pro 2 system running with to cameras. Interested in possibly upgrading/adding a Pro 3 camera or two. Are the Pro 3 cameras compatible with the Pro 2 basestation, or would I have to upgrade everything?
Hi Steve, are you going to be reviewing the pro 4 / ultra 2?
Great comparison video. Was debating whether to get an Arlo Pro 3 or the eufy. I would also love to see you do a video on the new Arlo Video Doorbell. Thanks.
Thank you. I'll see if i can get my hands on the Arlo Doorbell when it comes out.
Great comparison video.....TY....currently have the Pro 2.....not satisfied with the video definition or audio ready to upgrade to the Ultra.....TY for helping me do the comparison.
Glad it was helpful!
So with the snark station does it still tell you that there is a person or car or animal or that only comes with the $10. A month ?
No, that feature is only available if you subscribe.
For storage you use thumbdrive or external hd?
Can u record on the hard drive directly without subscribing to the Arlo monthly subscription? What is your thoughts on the solar panel for the Arlo pro 3
How often do you have to charge the battery?
there is a pretty noticeable difference in quality between the Ultra and the Pro 2 and 3, especially in audio. I was never really sold on Arlo for the price point considering the quality you were getting, it seems they have fixed all the problems with the ultra and I'm impressed from what I've seen
