Every now and then, a major giant stares down the barrel at relegation. This season, that misfortune has fallen to Galatasaray, the most successful club in Turkish history. Winless in 2022, after 25 games they lie 13th, now just three points clear of the relegation spots. Considering they have never dropped out of the Süper Lig in it’s 59 year history, these are worrying times for the club known to its fans as ‘Cimbom.’
But why are Galatasaray in so much trouble? In our latest Euro Football Daily Explained we take a lot at the problems in their bloated and ageing squad, plus explore the debt and poor management that has shackled the club for years. Galatasaray have a history of teetering towards disaster and failing to learn the errors of their ways.
But it’s not just Galatasaray who are struggling, with Fenerbahce and Besiktas also lagging behind this campaign. We take a look at the other factors that have caused the ‘Big 3’ from Istanbul to drop off so dramatically.

I fell in love with Galatasaray after they reached the UCL QF in 2013/14 after defeating Schalke in the round of 16. Their stadium atmosphere was terrifying. Sad to see them like this.

I can't believe how far they have fallen. I remember only 10 years ago my little English Town was buzzing when Gala (with Drogba in attack too) came to play a friendly here against our team. I wasnt even a fan of football that much at the time, but even I knew how huge it (the club and the friendly) was and getting to see legends live was amazing. Sad to see.

We only missed the championship by one goal last year. We are still the best but we have the worst season in our history because of the worse manager fatih terim. We only bought bad players because of him. The club did everything he wanted they bought every player he wanted just so the club was going to become “young”, with only young players like ajax leipzig and stuff but was a huge failure. Everyone knows you cant have a too young team especially in Turkey. Most gala fans hate terim for what he did, in the past we won lots of cups with him even tho those came with teams terim didnt built. But were already built for him by others. Also the poor management of the club is a big reason why we are in a bad position. They dont know anything about football or sports in general whatsoever, yet they still want to manage a big club and ruin everything doing so. Unfortunately we dont have smart management like european clubs, thats why almost all big clubs in Turkey are in a downfall!

The club is still the biggest club of Turkey, eventho some would say otherwise. Its just a very bad season, maybe one of the worst in the history of Galatasaray in the SuperLig. But as the most successful and biggest club of Turkey we know we will be back in winning ways rather sooner then later. Also its good to see that Galatasaray are playing better football the last 2 weeks. It wont be enough to finish top 5 i guess but next season will be probably much better if we keep rejuvenating our team. But yeah its a shame that this season is lost, it will cost some millions….

I am a huge Galatasaray supporter from Germany and I would say that one of our main issues on the long term was thinking short term. Galatasaray often seems to be a consumer’s Club but we also produce great talent eg Ozan Kabak, Emre Belözoglu or Bartug Elmaz who is going to Marseille this summer. The problem here is that we rely too much on the transfer market instead of using our own talent. Even with our new policy to use young players we don’t take advantage of our own academy. We spent 30 m on the transfer market while we have great talent in our own academy. Nevertheless I’d say that the issues aren’t as terrifying as they might seem because we still managed to become first seed in an European league group which had (in my eyes) champions league quality. We also have players with great resell value like marcao or kerem akturkoglu and a great football visionary in Luis Campos in our team. We just need to stick to the plan to fulfill our part. The bigger issues seem to be out of our influence in my eyes like the Turkish lira performing bad or the federation trying to stop us at all costs. It might seem like an excuse but there are clubs and referees which just try to weaken Galatasaray. Our ex coach Fatih terim was banned for 6 matches in a crucial part of the season and there was a really suspect decision making by the referees

One correction I would add to your video is that Galatasaray reached the quarterfinals of UCL in 2012/2013 with Fatih Terim, not Mancini. Mancini came at the 2013/2014 season and we finished at the round of 16 in UCL.
To get on the overall topic:
Another problem with Turkish football is that Turkish clubs in general always fire head coaches after one dismal season, there's never really any patience unless a head coach is doing well. As for GS, they kept going back to Fatih Terim after a head coach did poorly. As a GS fan myself, I used to love Terim but his coaching ways are too outdated for today's football. Torrent seems like a step in the right direction, he's sort of bringing the same philosophies he had when he was an assistant coach under Guardiola many years

  • @ozgurceltikci9106
    @ozgurceltikci9106 2 роки тому +12

In less than a year, Turkish football has realized its legends who had once modernized the game in the country have now fallen behind to the modern game. Terim’s ordeals at Galatasaray and Güneş’s absolutely disastrous Euros at the helm of Turkish NT have displayed how far these once-managerial greats have fallen.
In truth, Galatasaray’s youth injection at the beginning of the season was a much needed one but Terim, a winner but never a builder, was a completely unsuitable candidate for the job. The footballing brains trio of Luis Campos, Pasquale Sensibile and Domenec Torrent set up by the much-maligned club president Burak Elmas should have been brought in last summer rather than when the club is flirting with hazard in mid-January.
I don’t think Cimbom are going down this year, and establishing the team around rising stars such as Akturkoglu, Akgun (mesmerizing in his Liam spell at Adana DS under Montella), Nelsson and Boey is the future. Getting rid of the “veterans club” aka Arda Turan, Babel, Feghouli, among others will also be key. Selling players on who have failed but still command a resell value will also be of paramount importance. Antalyali, Elabdellaoui, Akbaba and Morutan will all have suitors come the summer.
Recruiting local talent is also crucial as the federation is bringing back the rather pointless or downright stupid foreigners cap rule as no team In SüperLig will be allowed to field more than 6 foreigners in their first eleven starting from next season.
Not all is lost but there’s much to be done. The glory days of 2000 or the times when the club secured the signings of Sneijder and Drogba in less than 24 hours are a long way away, however, and the fans should come to realize that.

Great insight Ozgur! As a Galatasaray fan myself, it pains me to see where we are now. Kind of reminds me of the season when we had Rijkaard/Hagi as head coaches for the 2010/2011 season and we finished a horrible 8th position. Even though Burak Elmas did a lot of mistakes this season, bringing in Torrent, Campos and Sensibile is a good start for rebuilding the squad. Beating Besiktas and narrowly losing out to Barcelona in the Europa League Round of 16 gives me hope that Torrent will hopefully do better from here on in

We‘re having a very very Bad season so far in the League. Even though we won today, we are 13th in the League. There are many Problems inside the Team but also in turkish Football.
We‘ve lost many points due to wrong decisions by referees even though there is the VAR in the turkish league.
But you can‘t blame them. We showed so many horrible Performances. The weiterst thing is, that we were leading in all big matches / derbys.
Against Trabzonspor: 1st Match went from 2:0 to 2:2. In the 2nd match Galatasaray were leading 1:0 till the 84th & still managed to lose 1:2 due to 2 big mistakes by our own Players.
Same against Besiktas & Fenerbahce. Galatasaray were leading both Matches & lost both with 2-1.
And there is were the Biggest Problem Beginns. Galatasaray decided do invest in Young Players & is slowly trying to get rid Off all the Old Stars.
Many players were bought at the start of the Season. Mostly 20-25 year old Players. Most of them did come from lower leagues. For example Cicaldau & Morutan, they both came from the romanian League or Nelsson which came from the danish League and this is were the Main Issue began. Like 4-5 New Young & unexperienced Players were thrown into the Starting 11. You could See how unexperienced the Team was due to their way of conceding goals & giving away the leads.
Or for example the striker Mostafa Mohamed. A Young Player which came from the Egypt League. Great Physicality but Missed so many Chances. Galatasaray is the Team with the Most Big chances created. We had Matches with like 25-3 shots and still managed to draw or lose, because our young & unexperienced Players were not „cool“ enough. Thats why Gomis for an example has been brought Back.
The issue is that the New Players got thrown in way to fast. You could replace 1-2 Players each Season. Not 4-6. And also there low experience.
But for sure it will be better in the Future. Cicaldau, Nelsson, Mohammed, Marcao, Morutan, Aktürkoglu & Boey have some huge Potential. Some of them are 24/25 but still they can Improve.
    Sorry for my english.

Mangled their own ground to knock Juve out of CL and attacked their social medias when Asamoah didn't sign for them, including a post about an ex Juve player that passed away. Karma.

Bro what? Mangling your own ground also hurts you yourself like wtf is that logic? And it's not like gala parked the bus on an away advantage, they needed to win and they did so it was well deserved.
