Lisa's contract: I don't have to do this show because the jokes are insulting to me and my intelligence. Plus, you aren't allowed to replace me with some blonde bimbo and just let my family do the show without me.
One little thing I noticed that the writers nailed perfectly. During "The Peppermint Twist" the sax part sounded like the saxophonist was bored, and just going through the motions. Just how the covers of songs sounded on those 70's variety shows.
I never noticed that the Simpsons' legs move at different times during their opening number as though one of them is off beat while trying to dance. Awesome attention to detail
"I'm Lisa, peppy, blonde, and stunning! Sophomore prom queen five years running!" lives in my head rent-free :p (to a lesser extent, so does "What's a Tim Conway?" "Oh, about a hundred and twenty pounds.")
Also a bit of a jab at how often teenagers in movies and TV shows of that time were played by much older actors. For example. Stockard Channing was 34 playing a high school senior in Grease.
You know if your imagine normal Lisa you'll really see Marge and Homer in a new light. The very thought that their daughter is in collage with a young son and infant makes them look more mature. In a really go way. Specially in the star outfits. If it was normal Lisa you wouldn't see it.
Honestly I like fake Lisa more then normal one and would have been okay if they replied her. I get this is a joke and reference to the Brady bunch but still would have purferd it
Neither does the creative staff; in fact no writers of this show wants to remember this show. Now this show , like Donny& Marie , was part of presenting clean, family-friendly programming on T.V. during the 1970s but these shows had to be seen to be believed.

I hated this episode when I was a teenager. I didn’t mind the Wiggum PI thing but thought that the Lovematic Grampa bit was dumb and I had no idea what they were going for with this segment. But that’s what happens when you’re born years after The Brady Bunch Variety show wasn’t on tv anymore.
I'm Mexican, I used to watch the Simpsons with my family in Canada and my dad used to tell us that all those references were understood by the US public. P.S. Most canadian children were not allowed to see the cartoon 😆
These were all absolutely genius parodies of bad TV. This was always one of my favorite episodes, and very few of us watching The Simpsons were old enough to have seen these variety shows in the 1970s. I'm continually stunned that so many people saw this episode as bad TV, when it was PARODYING bad TV, and doing it to a tee.
I came to this video specifically because I just watched this episode- that part of the song was driving me absolutely nuts trying to figure out what else it sounded like, so glad I found this comment 😂
I was way too young to understand the reference at the time. I was confused why they replace Lisa Simpson. The Brady Bunch Variety Hour aired before I was born.
In real life one of the Brady girls refused to be on the variety hour show, so they parodied that and Lisa was chosen since she was the middle one (same as the real life Brady one, I think) and she's always been the least popular character, at least then she was, also, it does seem like something Lisa's character would object to do anyway which is pretty funny and genius when you think about it haha👍
Lisa didn't want to have anything to do with the show. She may have read the script which they had jokes about her being jealous of Bart and Maggie since she was a middle child to them, along with jokes about her being hated in school due to her being a vegetarian. As such, Lisa refuses to have anything to do with the show.
Just as well they didn't use Lisa for this. She'd kill the fun out it. Although She would probably make a fuss over this older version of Lisa and quite likely keep bleating about how anti feminist and she is and make a fuss how she sounds like an older version of Sherri and terri
"A family who doesn't know the meaning of the word cancelled"
They didn't know how right they were.
All the Brady bunch actors are like “my contract never said I’d do this”
the only person who didnt do the show is Eve Plumb
Conan said that the Simpsons writers used to watch this all the time when they were on lunch
He also said several of the writers subsequently died of cancer years later.

If the 1970s variety shows were written as well as the Simpsons parody version, they never would've went off the air.

As absolutely cheesy as these variety shows were, they always look like they're having the time of their lives performing.

Nope, they figured they'd be out of a job next season. Which was the whole point of this episode.

Why did they replace Lisa with an older girl?
Before this segment of the episode. Troy states that "one member" of the family refused to do it, so she was replaced with a double.
