Oh i'm not disappointed at all! Thank you, John Hall! To my eyes here is a tender, light, dreamy performance, all the things I love this ballet for) It's sad the quality is as it is, but I'm so very glad I saw this. And yes, his arms are perfect)
glad you didn't mind the quality - yes, the porte de bras is magnificent one of my favourite 'Spectres' - Soloviev creates the most interesting 'character' for the rose - more masculine than many but still holding onto the 'rosiness'.
I certainly missed this. So grateful to see Soloviev in a rare complete piece. But somehow both Spectres seems distorted in quality. Both Soloviev and Liepa seem stretched out and elongated! And I think a red-blooded masculine rose is especially unexpected and captivating, not to mention attractive.
yes, i loved having put this one back - particularly as it does not seem to be on YT. i agree - the film is distorted in a number of ways - in a sense the male dancers do not seem themselves! i like both roses - certainly i prefer the red-blooded masculine rose, but in a curious way the more effete version interesting in revealing something of the original ballet.
I think this is lovely! His curling, curving arms are indeed beautiful. And the girl is, quite rightly, dancing as though asleep. Since Fokine created this ballet on Nijinsky- who was small, heavy-thighed and androgynous with especially short tendons (which helped to facilitate his remarkable elevation) - the steps are bound to look different on a taller, more conventionally masculine-looking 'spectre'. Soloviev was a gifted dancer. Since he is physically very different to demi-god Vaslav he had to find his own way of inhabiting this role. Sigh! I wouldn't mind such a hunk visiting my room and having a wee dance for and with me! LOL. Thank you for this. It's charming xx
Paula cunningham shennan yes, i agree - the girl should be dancing in a half-sleeping reverie - otherwise imagining the rose and the man at the ball as one fused imagined entity makes no sense. and for arms like unfolding art nouveau tendrils i like Manel Legris: ua-cam.com/video/DBm8Kcr9FrQ/v-deo.html i think you would have had to join the queue of those wanting a wee dance with our hunk here! - LOL!
soloviev was not so diffrent from nijinsky phisically he was rather short with the same overdeveloped legs that allowed him ,as nijinsky ,to a unusual elevation
surely you have read my mind.... was just thinking of this delightful pdd yesterday after seeing that you are back. Soloviev and Evteyeva in Spectre! his otherworldliness, her dewy girlish charm, this performance is perfection. thank you for uploading it again x
hi TheBallet1 yes, my favourite 'Spectre' too - i can't fault it on so many levels - technique, style, period sensitivity (not too 'updated' but not too perfumed quaint). very happy to have it back on the channel and very glad you are still following us here. x
John Hall Period and style are (as you suggest) important. This was choreographed more than 100 years ago. Were they to perform the steps in the manner of late 20th century dancers the effect would jar. Soloviev is very different to Nijinsky but he's a joy to watch here. This is his personal interpretation. Likewise the girl who is, quite convincingly, dreaming. The overall effect is evocative and romantic xx
yes, for me, it's getting the balance right between not presenting an older work as a museum piece and updating it so it is no longer of itself - Carla Fracci for me finds this balance with 'Giselle's i saw her do in the theatre btw, i saw her in 2003 in Rome in a modern work! it was not good but nice to see her for a final time.
I do admire both dancers and this went immediately onto my HD and onto my playlist - but I must admit he is a bit to masculine for my taste - I prefer the French dancers and especially Legris and I am coming to appreciate Bortoluzzi if only from what Enrico and Danny have taught me -- Thank you gentlemen!!
pediatrapaola And I must admit if I was going to dream about a rose and have it come into my room I probably would want it to be as masculine as possible (I think!?!?!?
I cannot deal with one blob moving around with zero definition, joined by two blobs. The horrible quality of the film completely defeats any historical importance, especially in terms of Soloviev, whom I greatly admire!
Evteyeva was a lovely ballerina, one of m favorites.
Никогда не слышала о такой балерине. Удивительное исполнение! Какая лёгкость, грация, они словно невесомый! Great, thanks!
Рекомендую посмотреть Лебединое озеро 1968года . Евтеева -Одетта и Одилия. Есть в ютубе.
Великолепно! Какое мастерство и какая легкость!
именно так

Effete is ok but not affected effete!
Sima Raft i agree - period effete as a style in the better sense.
Sima Raft Soloviev was so beautiful. Gorgeous xx
I do believe Nijinsky dance like that!
!!!!!!!!!!!+++ Большое спасибо за видео !!!
Чудо!, Они парят в воздухе, !, Неземные- Эфир.
действительно! хорошо сказано

Paula cunningham shennan not so different if you note both them were rather heavily built with big powerful legs
soloviev was not so diffrent from nijinsky phisically he was rather short with the same overdeveloped legs that allowed him ,as nijinsky ,to a unusual elevation
yes, i agree - with a very strong Achilles tendon
Whenever I watch another dancer in Nijinsky's roles I 'see' his beautiful face x
thank you for sharing
hi kv626
very happy to have it out there again as i can't see it anywhere else on YT
cheers.
I never mind flawed footage of a great performance. Here it contributes to the magic.
yes, the magic shines through!

According to the narrator at the beginning, the girl is Yelena Yevteeva

yes but soloviev sends smell of roses around when moves .
pediatrapaola And I must admit if I was going to dream about a rose and have it come into my room I probably would want it to be as masculine as possible (I think!?!?!?
judith booth surely if l was a woman wouldn't like awful tsiskaridze in my room jumping around
pediatrapaola well maybe not Tsisk but I wouldn't mind Legris or Heymann or Dima or Igor or..................
pediatrapaola that's the right way to put it!
hi galya51
thanks for the ID - i should have listened more carefully to the audio! :)
she is elena evteyeva currently main teacher and coach in mariinsky.
hi pediatrapaola
thanks for identifying the ballerina as Elena Evteyeva - much appreciated and i'll add it now to the notes.
:)
А какой это год?
Elena Evteeva? That is what I hear.
and the narrant voice is dudynskaya in person.
hi oldoperafan
yes, i must have been a dunce not to have heard it on the audio - thanks for the alert!
John Hall No, not at all. But I think we did exactly the same before. Unless it was in another life...
pediatrapaola This is a fascinating piece of info - how do you know?
oldoperafan I mean that the voice is Dudinskaya.
I cannot deal with one blob moving around with zero definition, joined by two blobs. The horrible quality of the film completely defeats any historical importance, especially in terms of Soloviev, whom I greatly admire!
yes, the quality is so poor i almost did not upload this video
