- The new Princess of Wales is making a series of ‘subtle tributes’ to Princess Diana in her choice of outfits, that’s the view of a leading royal fashion designer. Amanda Wakeley, who has dressed many royals, including both Diana and Catherine, believes that the latter’s skill is ‘owning’ her look.
‘The suit that she wore to the Trooping the Colour this summer, honestly that could have been out of Diana’s wardrobe,’ she tells a special fashion episode of Palace Confidential. ‘She owns it as hers, it’s not a pastiche of how Diana would have worn it, she’s owning her look which is a wonderful look. I love those subtle tributes to her mother-in-law.’
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail’s Royal Editor Rebecca English discusses the Princess of Wales evolution from Kate Middleton to the Princess of Wales, which culminated, she believes, at this year’s Coronation.
‘For me, there was a real - on a fashion level - stop in your tracks moment at the Coronation, when she got into Westminster Abbey,’ she tells the show. ‘She just looked like a Queen in waiting to me. It was so elegant, so polished, so regal I thought “she’s got it”.’
The pair also discuss Camilla’s fashion journey to the Queen, how the King is adapting to his ‘grandfather-of-the-nation’ role style-wise and the Duchess of Sussexes claims about stifling royal clothing protocols.

Catherine looked regal dressed in black clothing and pearls during a funeral. When the picture was taken, with the veil over her face was perfection for a future queen. That is one of my favorite pictures. It shows her perfection in any event.

She became more stylish after her separation from Charles, which I think is about the same time she started working with Ms. Wakeley. Catherine has made better choices from the start, which I attribute to being more mature than Diana when she got married.

Loved Amanda talking about her experience, working with Diana and Catherine.. Two wonderful ladies but also terrific individuals, in their own right. Eyes glazed over, when it comes to Markles. A minor celebrity in America, who stole a title from us!

What I love about Queen Camilla’s style is it is chic, tasteful, modern at times, traditional at others, and she chooses colours that are slightly more muted or pastel so she doesn’t outshine her husband. She nailed the trip to France flawlessly.

A really nice lady called me and told me she was worried because the coat I wanted needed to be made but she did have an exact one Catherine bought and would I like it. The customer service was absolutely amazing. The only time I could think of service in the States was an Hermes store by appointment. Nope, didn’t buy anything there. Emmy London has fabulous service too. Capitalism is a beautiful thing. You go where you are treated well.

I loved the royal fashion talk and agree that Catherine is a star, but in the best ways, and Camilla has really captured her uniquely regal style. But - let's put to bed the myth that Meghan "felt restricted" with her colors while in the royal family. She doesn't wear color now. She's still wearing beige, white, black and mud colored outfits. In fact, when she was asked to wear certain colors in order to fit in with family portraits at events like Louis's christening, she refused and wore things that clashed with the agreed colors - so nobody was telling Meghan Markle what colors to wear.
Camilla’s dresses mostly have the same cut but different fabrics and colours. Quite boring and ageing.

I’d be interested to have a couple male fashion designers come in to discuss PW’s style and offer up suggestions on how he can up his game a bit. In my opinion, PW is looking physically fit and particularly handsome as he hits his 40s. He seems to be owning this stage of his life and, dare I say, he’s looking sexy!😉 So fashion advice on suit tailoring and fashion suggestions to compliment his role as Prince of Wales and remain unfussy, but more polished would be a fun focus. I don’t know if there is an ongoing general rule. But for Prince Louis’s baptism, the request was to wear white or blue. Meghan wore brown. Another time, for one of the church services in memory of the military, I think, they were supposed to wear blue or red or white, and Meghan wore green. She becomes contradictory when she’s asked to do something specific and doesn’t want to comply. The proof is all there in publicized photos.
