Of all the "heartland rockers" there was Mellencamp, Springsteen, and maybe you can throw in Bryan Adams, even tho he's from Canada. His musical style fit the genre. But before any of them, there was Seger.

@@madcapper6 yep ... the weird thing is that when Bob "burst on" to the national scene he was over thirty and had been a professional musician for over ten years. Stranger still, he was a legend in Detroit before anyone else knew who he was. I had the experience of seeing him in 1973, in Detroit, as a teenager ... had no idea who he was. He sold out Cobo Hall, over 10,000 people crazy scene. Yet, a week earlier, he played to less than a 1000 people. He earned his way to the top.

Great reaction Scribe! This whole album was something my brothers and friends and I would listen to in the garage drinking and getting high to back in the 70's! I was a teenager and living in Michigan and Bob was from Michigan so whether it was our garage or a friend's garage everyone had a record player with a stash of albums from Michigan bands like Seger, Ted Nugent, Grand Funk, Rare Earth, Motown bands, and that's the thing, you said you heard a Reggae vibe in the bass, and you're right, Michigan bands combine a little of everything in their music! Always have! The radio stations back then weren't just country or pop or rock. You'd hear Bob Seger, then Hank Williams, then Kiss, then Martha and The Vandellas, then Frank Sinatra, then The Doors, you heard everything on one station. Music was music but just don't bring any import cars into Michigan because they'll be stripped and car-be-cues within 2 minutes of you closing the door! LOL

Actually he preferred the Muscle Shoals soul he heard coming out of WLAC Radio in Nashville, Tennessee in the 60s and early 70s. That's what led him to the tiny town of Sheffield, Alabama. In 1971. Other travelers arriving at about the same time were Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon, Steve Winwood and a Groovy Chick named Linda who was about to explode in the Country Rock wave that was beginning to come ashore! Along with Paul Simon, The Staple Singers Joe Cocker, Otis Redding, Cher and Boz Scaggs who had all heard what the Swampers did to help revive Aretha Franklin's stalled career. Throw in a fledgling Florida Band named Lynyrd Skynyrd and you had a hotbed of enormous talent sharing one tiny building that the Rolling Stones had almost blown off it foundations just a few years earlier. Looking back, it was an unreal occurrence that will never happen again.😔

Trivia: Craig Frost is the keyboard player on this record. He grew up in Flint and was with Grand Funk Railroad until their breakup in '74 and then joined Segar. He's been with him ever since. If you like Bob Seger's music, and you wanna get a feel for the kind of Live Shows he puts on, I would like to suggest Bob Seger's Double Live Bullet Lp. Recorded LIVE in Kobo hall, Detroit Michigan.
His music was so unappreciated back then because he was still considered a struggling artist.
The Double Live Bullet release was the album he put out just before Night Moves came out in late 1976.
" Traveling Man / Beautiful Loser." Off the. Double Live Bullet is my absolute favorite. It was music he was putting out a time in his career when he was thinking about hanging it up, because his career hadn't taken off yet.
His last ditch attempt in the music industry was the Night Moves release.
And of course, Night Moves was the album that finally helped push him to the top of the charts.
But...Bob Seger Double Live Bullet: ( " Let it Rock." ) was a perfect example of how hard he was hitting it, back then in the mid 1970s.

One of history’s greatest guitarists is in poor health, and things look grim...out of respect for the great Leslie West, I encourage you to listen to either Never In My Life (for an up tempo jam), or Theme from an Imaginary Western (for a slower, more poignant song ). Theme was originally written by Bruce for Cream, but Clapton rejected it and it was subsequently given to Mountain, and of course, Leslie made a masterpiece of it.
