@@honks9484 as someone with curly hair and who straightens my hair half the time (to make school mornings easier), I can say that although heat protectant does help a little, you hair will still be significantly drier afterwards and even partially damaged. It’s an okay idea to go straight in with the flat iron, but it’s a better idea to blow dry it first!

Is that week old hair? The oils your hair traps might be too much causing the smoke along with a too high temp. If you blow dry straight with warmish air and then straighten you'll have better luck. Then let fresh oil collect on your hair and watch it get better for a week.
