- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Shaneen Fantin is an architect who challenges us on some of the assumptions about living in the Tropics and advocates design solutions that use less space, consume less energy, and maximize flexible indoor/outdoor spaces to create places that will bring us joy, cost us less and increase our interaction with the natural environment and community.
Shaneen Fantin is a Designer, Thinker and Writer. She is Director of POD (People Oriented Design) - a multi-disciplinary architecture, design, research and community engagement practice based in Cairns. Shaneen is also the Chair of the FNQ committee for the Australian Institute of Architects and is an Adjunct Associate Professor at James Cook University.
Shaneen has spent much of the last twenty years working in remote and regional areas with multi-cultural clients and she has a penchant for observing how people use space and create home in the places they live.

“Least House Necessary” is such a beautiful idea
The British in India created a beautiful architectural legacy. The most aesthetically pleasing and functionally beautiful bungalows, cottages, out-houses in the plains, on the hill stations, British built the most beautiful India I would never see. Our own indigenous community of Vishwakarmas built houses for the entire Indian Subcontinent. my favorite south India houses with inner courtyard and the main door with raised platform porch where people slept during summer called Padasaale, Thinnai. I love this design for tropical climate.. lots of sun light.
Do you live in this house with inner courtyard? I am very interested in inner courtyard idea but I wonder how does it deal with rain.

I live in Brazil, where houses used to be open to the outside, with large varandas and people spending most of their time in the backyard. Now, the houses here are looking more and more like plastic surgery clinics, not only visually, but also aseptic, characterless and closed to the outside. People now, even the poorest, spend more and more time in malls and the air conditioning unit has become a consumer dream for Brazilians. Here's the progress...
As a 'sustainable' architect, I totally agree with the speaker. I live in a tropical/subtropical climate, and have seen how modern architecture/construction and materials are totally unsuitable for the tropical climate. I am working hard to learn from the traditional architecture in the local area and re-create more climate conscious designs that fit the climate and the environment of the site.

Makes so much sense for me in southern Africa where we live in concrete homes hot in winter & freezing in summer cos the designers never think about designing for the climate.

An excellent talk on what should be an emerging priority. The spread of cookie cutter style brick veneer houses complete with A/C's in Northern Australia has never made sense to me. Sure they are cheap and convenient to build but in the mid to long term they are a disaster. In recent years climate change has ramped up the need to re-evaluate housing too.
Nicely presented. Wonderful ideas to be put into practice.
These ideas are badly needed across the tropics. Folks here in Costa Rica would benefit greatly, but everyone dreams of the lifestyles of the 'developed' countries. Even when what was here before was actually quite better.

Excellent video and I have learned so much. What do you think about round houses in the tropics? I will be building in the Caribbean and I am thinking of building a round house.
Round walls deflect the wind in hurricanes/typhoons, and such houses are more likely to be standing after a big storm. In addition studies have found that a roof pitch of 7/12 is the best to withstand typhoon force winds. I also wish to build a house with round walls, but I will do it in the Philippines. We build houses in cairns that have the heighest profits for builder's. The average 200m2 dogbox that kenfrost builds makes them 50k
the toilet is too far from the bedroom? wondering, how do you pee in the middle of the night? not convenience.
I love when someone tries to make utopia out of blue. Tell a six people family they don't need bigger house with two bathrooms. Tell people they don't need privacy and spliting a house into day zone and night zone activities. Open a house for more insects and mosquitos. Tell people they should love sweat in very hot days and not to use AC when there is 35-40 C outside.

If you notice... opening the house for more insects could mean more interactions with our natural landscape environment. Thus, we can be more aware of what's happening & how we can help to improve it. Rather than stuff it under the rug. However, I do agree about a six family member household should have two bathrooms atleast.

As someone very much interested in passive house design for the tropics, I learned absolutely zero from this talk. She seems like a Karen just using the stage to spread ideology rather than give helpful information.
