  • Check out my newest project. A 4000 Watt non-reative Dummy load that is electronically switchable to 1-ohm, 1.6-ohm, 2-ohm, 4-ohm and 8-ohm!
    Used with an SMD AMM-1 will measure amplifier power as well as supply voltage simultaneously!
    Temperature controlled cooling, over temperature protection and low voltage protection.

    Very nice very impressive! I was contemplating building on but I know nothing about writing code. Lol. Good job though brother. Some of those machines are just so darned expensive that with the knowledge to be able to build one is far more intriguing and rewarding than saving up the thousands of dollars to purchase one

    Very slick! This is much easier than manually rewiring the loads for each test! The AD-1 has a few more test modes, such as Dynamic Power and Certified modes. The AMM-1 mimics the uncertified mode on the AD-1 (up to clipping). You could use your DD-1 in conjunction with the AMM-1 to show wattage at 1% THD. Either way, great project! Thanks for posting the video.

      Yes, I can simply play track 1 or 2 on the AD-1 disc to get dynamic. And I can tune gain with 0db overlap to do certified. So essentially I can do all 3. Just takes a bit more effort.
      Thanks for the comments though. I was hoping you would see this video.

      rtkota5point9 But I thought the AMM-1 does wattage at "clipping"? You would need to integrate the DD-1 to get the 1% distortion rating (certified). I haven't tried my AMM-1 with the dynamic tracks, that's cool if it's fast enough to capture wattage and clipping during those tests! I've tried to use my Klein clamp to measure DC A pull during those tests and it is not fast enough to measure the current pull. It will do the other tests, but it doesn't stop at clipping, just keeps measuring Amperage as long as it's pulled from the source.

      @TheAmpLab  9 років тому

      The AMM-1 does stop at clipping, but it will always hold the highest wattage it saw. Normally you would set the gains with a -5 or -10 db overlap. Thats the only way it will ever hit clipping when playing the AD-1 test tracks that are played at -0db.
      If you simply adjust the gains with a DD&1 @ -0db, no overlap. And tune them to juuuust before the distortion light comes one, then when you play the test track back, it will only go as high as the point just before distortion. It will never actually reach clipping.
      The AMM-1 will still hold the highest wattage it saw up to that point. Thus giving you a certified test. :)

    I would love to have that! I've been wanting to do something similar but would be old school like bigDwiz with a Load bank and my oscope it does audio testing for watts but plan on getting the amm-1! I have finally found someone interesting to watch beside big Dwiz! Keep the videos coming!! You definitely know the game!

    Sweet project...would be fun to see what you could bench/dyno with something like an xforce amps 750a/14v psu on a dedicated 60a/240v line...lol

    Man that's awesome it looks really easy to make but do by any chance have a copy of the code form the the environment ?

    Very impressive build! We are looking into getting a load bank for AD-1 Dyno testing, just to load down the un-tested channels for more accurate results. This thing would be perfect! ....You taking orders? :P

    You could definately benefit from a battery for transient peaks but are you doing it to listen to music for extended periods or just short duration tests with resistive loads ? BigDWiz used two 978-100's power supplies to test amps with no battery and no problems for years . It provides a more steady voltage rate than a battery also . Plenty to measure output power of different amps and no battery to keep charged . Just turn the power supplies on when you do your load bank .

      I am picking up a brand new Schumacher 200A supply tomorrow, and I have already added two more AGM batteries. I should be all set after that I think.

  • @kylerobinson9079

    Very cool . Love how it's all digital and and push button changes instead of having to rewire it each time for different ohm loads.
    Why the battery tho on something as sophisticated as you've made that to be ?

      Took about a week, and maybe $400 or so...The dummy loads and Arduino were the most expensive parts.

    build a sharp notch filter that cuts out the frequency being played to sense distortion, then buy and current transformer to measure the current, use an arduino with the emon library to measure real, apparent, reactive power and power factor
    program the arduino to display the max powers once the distortion detection triggers
    also a notification of how cheap you can build an SMD DD1

    Do you know if the impedance of the braking resister changes with frequency? Is it 4 ohms from 20 Hz to 20 kHz? I've used water heater elements but they can vary +/- 1 ohm over the audio spectrum.

    • @TheAmpLab
      @TheAmpLab  8 років тому

      They do not change. I tried the water heater elements first as well.

    Why not have a couple simple power supplies such as Audio Authority 978 which can be strapped for 200 amps ?

    • @TheAmpLab
      @TheAmpLab  9 років тому

      You would still need a reserve power supply like batteries. Otherwise its like hooking a system up in your car with just an alternator and no battery. It doesnt work that way. You need batteries for reserve and for filtering/smoothing of the power supply.

    What type of controller and where did you get it?

    • @TheAmpLab
      @TheAmpLab  9 років тому

      What do you mean by controller? Everything was custom made basically. Its all run from an Arduino Uno microprocessor that must be programmed by writing code for it that tells it how to handle each input and output.

    "sometimes it doesn't like to read the discs"
    The head unit is probably fine, it's just having a hard time reading through all those fingerprints from you putting your fingers all over the disc, and possibly micro-scratches from setting the disc down on objects instead of keeping it in a CD case.

    • @TheAmpLab
      @TheAmpLab  9 років тому +1

      No, even when the disc was brand new. Its old, laser is weak. All there is to it. New headunit in now, no more issues.
