The Legend of Zelda is the reason why I'm a music composer today. Literally. Zelda music for me is something really special.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I actually got a tattoo of the treble clef from the music staves in Ocarina of Time for this very reason. I can trace my musicianship to my love of this game as a kid, and I'd say Koji Kondo is my biggest musical influence when writing
Im gonna check out your channel looks cool so far!
I agree - which is one of my criticisms of Breath of the Wild.
Composer brothers
@@brondabailey1 I've personally hated the fact that the music in the overworld is basically the same no matter where you are. Unless you're in a town or Hyrule Castle/Castle Town ruins, it all blends together with the same feeling, which is a huge step down from other Zelda games, particularly Twilight Princess.
Zelda music is so good they can just reverse them and they still sound amazing
I can't wait for Backwards Groose theme. XD
Zelda reversing music to create new songs is impressive, but Smash Bros. Ultimate went a step further and reversed a song to create… the same song!
Its Final Destination theme is a palindrome and contains Lifelight's notes even when reversed.
Honestly the composers and musicians working at Nintendo are literally composing in 4D while being four parallel universes ahead of us
It’s an actual composing trick. I don’t remember what it’s formally called, but when my theory teacher told us to compose a short melody a an end of year project, reversing a section to make a new one was one of the things we could do
@@nicocchi didn't know that, they are just too good it's unreal
@@anonymousfellow8879 The technique is called retrograde. Some of the earliest examples of composers who wrote pieces in retrograde include famous dudes like Bach, but the practice has been around since at least the 1300s.
I know this doesn’t have to go with the video but I think that Videogame music is underrated.
True
It's usually designed to be ambient, enjoyable but not distracting from the task at hand. Everyone overlooks that, and I'd rather have some of the Majora's Mask OST playing than Imagine Dragons ranting about dust or whatever while I try to drive.
Factual Statement
Aaaah, yes, it is beautiful
Agreed
7:46 You can also hear these notes in oot's titlescreen
it's also the same jingle that plays in Super Mario Bros. 3 when you use the flute to warp to later worlds.
@@mrlborges Mario and Zelda have had long history leaving Easter eggs in each other's games. Some say both franchises take place in the same universe
Same here! I was just about to comment that.
Em Pokémon Sword & Shield também. No trailer de Crown Tundra, ao revelar pela primeira vez Calyrex
To think most of those "Easter eggs" pass unnoticed to most of us.
Hilda's theme is Zelda's lullaby upside-down (reflected on the staff).
I never noticed that
But Zelda's Lullaby is the Skyward Sword theme backwards.
@@TheZebbga But OOT came first so isn't Ballad of the Goddess Zelda's Lullaby backwards?
@@TheZebbga now all we need is a zelda’s lullaby that’s both upside down *and* backwards
@@generalkenobi3609 Yes, yes it is.
"Zelda music is a huge part of what makes this series so beloved, so special"
Me: (Remembers Guardian theme) heh, yeah... *special*
The most cursed thing you will ever hear early game in Zelda history. Unless BOTW 2 kicks off with a Ganondorf boss fight. Then we're going to suffer.
Yeah. Every time I hear the Guardian Theme I have a panic attack
Skyward Sword or Breath of the Wild?
@@lady-hightower4698 Both. Botw is when you have to take a test and SS is when your mom sees the F on your paper
*Remembers Guardian theme*
Hehe. I'm in danger!
When I first heard the BotW title theme, I was like "Wow, Koji Kondo at its best..." and this theme is always in my head
The BotW soundtrack actually wasn't composed by Kondo! It was done by other amazing composers, whose names I can't remember haha
The “get mask” jingle is actually a mix of the AoL “get item” theme and the Song of Healing
Came here to say exactly this
Wow in retrospect I guess they are different themes, just did a 100% majoras mask run
@@crunchysalmons That reminds me. I've gotta fine tune or make another randomizer seed so I'm not stuck right at the beginning.
@@mdarou2005 same lmao
I’m guessing you commented this before finishing the video
Man when I hear zeldas lullaby it is so comfortable and it makes me feel peaceful. I love it. I could listen to it all day
I listen to a remix of it every night when I go to sleep. For those who are curious, it is Zelda by Super Guitar Brothers.
I’m a simple man. I see Zeltik uploads, and I click.
But if there's Undertale in the video, I leave.
7:45 The classic tune in Oot we all love, and enjoy; very fitting. That Goron parallel at the end was cool.
I don't think anyone has talked about how after you beat a level in AOC its a remix of after you beat a blight in BOTW
Hyrule warriors, age of calamity
I feel like this could be a whole series, focusing on one game at a time (or maybe one important song and all the games it's referenced in). Some of the ones brushed off as "well-known" in the video (Ballad of the Goddess being backwards Zelda's Lullaby or the Wind Waker ones at 2:43) just blew my mind, and I wish we could hear the audio tracks to go with it.
Seconded!
That Majoras Mask - Zelda II reference blew my mind!
I love it when music and musical references get discussed on this channel.
I think my favorite ones still have to be how Zelda’s Theme is hidden inside both Sheik’s Theme and Tetra’s Theme.
It's quite interesting to emphasise the connection between these 3 characters through music
One Easter egg that I haven't seen anyone notice is in the music that plays when a divine beast is setting its sights on ganon once you free them, you can hear the oath to order in there.
For real!?
Anyone else notice the LoZ Recorder plays the same tune as the Super Mario Bros 3 Warp Whistle?
Did you know that Yuga, Midna and Ghirahim sing a part of their theme? Yuga will hum it in the first scene of the church,
Ghirahim will hum it during the resurrection dance rital before Link interrupts him
and Midna, (To the best of my memory,) hums it early on when speaking to Link on the roof of Hyrule castle
Midna hums it in her idle animation too
I hope we see more classic Zelda songs come back in Breath of the Wild 2!
I just got done watching one of your videos!!! Keep up the good work!!
@@SterbsMcGurbs oh, thank you so much! That's so sweet!
Fun Fact:all of Skyward Swords music was orchestrated
Goron mines does something interesting with the time signature. It's in 4/4 or I guess 8/8 time signature, but instead of dividing it into 4 groups of 2 or the reverse of that, which is what most music in that time signature does, it divides it into 2 groups of 3 and a third group of 2, which creates a very unbalanced feeling.
I could be wrong, but isn't the recorder/ocarina of wind motif also in the Ocarina of Time title theme?
It is!
It's also the theme of the warp whistle from mario 3, which is like the recorder but... the opposite, I guess?
6:44 I always thought that was just the Song of Healing with an uplift at the end
same
I still remember the sheer look of astonishment when it clicked in my brain that some of Wind Walker’s songs were adaptions of previous Zelda tunes.
Everyone talks about Skyward Sword main theme being zeldas lullaby in reverse, but I’ve never noticed that Lorule castle theme is just hyrule castle theme in reverse!
It actually been there for quite a while. Since link between worlds release back in 2013. It’s only certain parts of the song in reverse those.
Music induces nostalgia, joy, or terror. It’s the choice of the creators.
There's seemingly no end to the depth of detail put into the Zelda games, so many puzzles, even within the soundtracks! Thanks for this video, you've given us something fresh and thought provoking ☺🙏
Wind Recorder is also referenced in Ocarina of Time’s theme music.
I love how they recycle and rework music in each game. It gives the series a feeling of consistency in the world. That even though its a different time or an alternate timeline, you're still in the same world. They've masterfully changed the music enough to convey those changes between times or timelines.
Sheik's Theme has Zelda's Theme hidden within it.
Dude a link between worlds has a phenomenal soundtrack
Thank you for giving it the spotlight it deserves :)
Got to be my favourite 2D game, mostly the music and art but the story is great too. I love the lorule castle theme but my fave has got to be the main lorule theme. Low-key epic stuff 🤩🤩🤩🌟🌟
Thanks for your works ♥
God how many verifieds are gonna show up
Je découvre la chaîne de ce mec y a une semaine puis je le vois apparaître sous une chaîne que je suis depuis des plombes. Le hasard fait bien les choses
The sound of the recorder is actually referenced way before the minish cap, It's in the title theme of Ocarina of Time.
I'm French and I am trying to learn English thanks to your vidéo😊
That’s awesome, good luck!
Thanks
The first ten seconds of your videos make me feel like I’m at the pearly gates of Valhalla
The music played when link gets a mask in MM, is a melodic upward conclusion to the song of healing main dramatic theme. Also about the song of healing, the three main notes played by the player in reverse are the saria's song main notes.... (one song is sad, but in reverse is a happy song)
I love the music, it really does a lot of immersion and I love that they repurpose it and give new life to old songs.
I have an Easter Egg of my own. On UA-cam deep within the Zelda Community we can meet the ZeldaTuber Zeltik. Zeltik is a knowledgeable scholar well research in the lore of the Zelda series. When you click on his videos you heard a jingle play. This Jingle is actually a violin rendition of the opening cutscene theme from the Wind Waker. The Wind Waker is one of Zeltik's favourite Zelda experiences so this is a cute reference to the channels origins.
Zeltic's opening is the same sound to outset Island?
@@DaughterOfYahweh- No the theme from the tapestry recapping the events of Ocarina of Time.
Never actually noticed the connection with the Goron Mines and lullaby. Nice one
You missed in the wind waker, phantom ganons theme has ganons laugh from zelda ii when you get a game over.
Jaw literally fell through the floor at the Goron mines/ Goron lullaby connection 🤯 you continue to blow my mind with all your videos
Zelda and Kingdom Hearts composers are the reason I understand music patterns, drum timing, and why I started playing Piano and producing my own music for fun.
The attention to detail put into the little things is what really stuck with me as a kid. I love them so much for doing this.
My mind was blown when I realised that Fi's voice (or certainly a similar voice) can actually be heard in the music for the City in the Sky dungeon in Twilight Princess (ua-cam.com/video/LW7TwJD1IsM/v-deo.html starts coming in after 15 seconds). Obviously City in the Sky is meant to be Skyloft many, many years later in the future.
That's Twilight Princess referencing a game that hadn't even come out yet. Madness.
Its pretty previsible that the Skyward team just kept an sound concept from the previous game ( TP) and used to give voice to a character.
But is nice tip you bring here.👌
I think those voices are the oocaas (idk how to spell it) since that dungeon is supposed to be an actual populated city
You can also find the Warp Whistle tune in the intro theme for Ocarina of Time.
Feels good, man 😌🙏
Huh! I always thought that the "Get Mask" theme from MM was a shortened down version of the Song of Healing. Learn something new every day!
The recorder at 7:40 is also the same tune used in Super Mario Bros 3, when you use the flute to teleport to a different world.
Honestly I love when big franchises do things like this. Even if the games aren't closely connected by console/generation or story, common themes and motifs can be carried over and evoked through music. Metroid also does this to an extreme degree; I didn't realize until recently, since I started on the GameCube with the Prime trilogy, but almost all of the music in the first two Metroid Prime games are recycled or remixed from Super Metroid and older 2D games.
“Lorule is the best final dungeon song”
Stone Tower Temple:Am I a joke to you
Also it’s cool how the Goron mines have part of something from mm since you find the hero’s bow which is implied to be the same from mm
@Kenjamin I wouldn’t count it as a final dungeon more like a mini dungeon or a room with challenges not a dungeon but I can see your point
If you listen closely in the majora boss fight you can hear the first three notes of the first dungeon ever in Zelda
Ever since I was a baby I would rock out to my favorite Zelda music. It's just that amazing. The Legend of Zelda is LEGENDARY
I've always recognized the music references in other Zelda games Im like "Heeey this sounds like Kokiri forest!"
My favourite Zelda musical easter egg is that Kokiri Forest, Outset Island and Tarry town all share the same chord progression, in the same key, and also share some melodic phrases! The fact that all of these places share a theme of home makes it even better ❤
The "get mask" jingle from Majora's Mask also starts with the same three notes of the Song of Healing.
I had NEVER made ONE of these references, despite me being a legit Zelda fan. I appreciate your videos very much.
The Song of Storms is what got me into the franchise. I read that someone once walked down the aisle to it for their wedding, and I listened to the track. 15 years later and then remain obsessed with the franchise
The recorder and flute tune from Zelda 1 and Minish Cap are also found in the title screen music for OOT
One thing I’ve noticed that I’ve never heard anyone talk about is the fact the the first few notes of Epona’s theme are the inverse of the first few notes of the ballad of the wind fish. I don’t know for sure, but I thought it worth sharing
It may not be a reference or easter egg, but Midna's Lament is one of the best and most immersive pieces of emotional music I've ever heard in gaming.
So I played every single Zelda but didn’t know about most of these callbacks. I wonder if every time I play Zelda I get a subtle nostalgic feeling through the music without even knowing it.
I recently did one of those “Guess the song” Zelda quizzes, and the TP soundtrack is just so unbelievably distinct and fitting that I instantly was able to identify at the least, the game they came from with much more success than almost any other game besides Majorca’s Mask.
I play Zelda for more than 15 years and I just learned so much things with your video! Thank you Zeltik!
The wind theme is also in Ocarina of Time's intro.
Glad someone pointed it out
Before watching: I hope it mentions that the sound when Zelda is mad at Groose in the beginning of Skyward sword is the same sound that plays when you successfully cook a meal in Breath of the wild.
In the middle of watching: The recorder sound is also the opening to the introduction of Ocarina of Time. Also it's about time we got to Twilight Princess.
After watching: He didn't mention the Skyward sword thing.
The tune you said the ocarina of wind plays is also in the opening "Press start" screen for OOT. I love that song lol
The warp whistle jingle is the same as the warp whistle in Super Mario Bros 3, and the Fairy Fountain theme in the series is the Water Land theme from Super Mario Bros 3 - the closest version is the one found in Wind Waker.
Wow. Zelda music is amazing. I have always loved Zelda music.
Never been this early to a Zeltik video.
Nice.
I really appreciate that you put the music into the videos that makes the reference easyer to understand!
The teleport sound from NES zelda is also the same one from Super Mario 3s whistle.
I don't know why, but this video made me remember how amazing it felt to play Twilight Princess for the first time. You're right -- the music is very immersive in that title.
The recorder sound from Minish Cap and the original Zelda is also the same as the opening to Ocarina of Time
The music of The Zelda Series gives me the inspiration to start learning music. I know how to play the ocarina now, and every single Zelda tune and theme. It’s my favorite thing to talk about and point out all the little Easter eggs. :)
Makes you wonder if you, or somebody else go around and always play every single Zelda theme backwards to check if it has been reused or been used before.
As a band nerd I love just hearing all of these songs and hearing all the instruments that just get mixed in
I really love how at 4:14 your words ("choir, ... higher") rhyme, especially, how it fits the music :-D
Every single day I have a Zelda song stuck in my head and I’m not mad about it
The other Easter egg for the recorder theme is in the beautiful title screen music for OoT. Blew my mind when someone pointed it out. It's basically the main motif!
The mask get jingle also pulls from the song of healing, playing the first set of notes and resolving to the parallel major version of the normally minor song.
@Zeltik 7:45 that is also the same sound as OoT opening theme!!! Wow never noticed
I never noticed the similarities of a few of these tbh but it makes me appreciate the music much more
How cool that you used the Majora's Mask Mask Sound found by LooksLikeLink! I saw the title and instantly thought back to the video he made about that easter egg, but I would never have thought, that you'd actually include it here :D
The first time I discovered that the ballad of the goddess is zelda's lullaby in reverse I was completely MINDBLOWN
I never really found a music style I prefered but since I started to play Zelda I finally found it. I've never loved songs this much and I listen 24/7 to Zelda music
I'm so happy I found it
Bonus Reference!
The Recorder’s Sound Effect is also a reference to the Sound Effect that plays when you use the Warp Whistle in Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES.
A reference to a reference to a reference.
The warp whistle in the original Zelda is also the same warp whistle as Mario 3. Which is also in the opening credits of Ocarina of Time. I love how nintendo put this little references into their games, especially across different series.
I loved the section of Lorule castle where link went through in reverse with the music. Quite comical seeing Link swing his sword and enemies and obstacles appearing out of thin air.
The amount of effort you put into your videos be it the music the editing or script writing is always phenomenal. Thank you so much for giving me hours or tv quality content for free!
I think you missed that Sheik’s theme has Zelda’s lullaby in it
I never noticed the Lorule Castle detail! I love Legend of Zelda music so much! 💖💕
I love Hyrule castle theme in twilight princess because it starts out as the ocarina of time song and the higher you climb the more you can hear ganon's theme blending with it, until you've reached the final boss door and ganon's theme overtakes it completely
Honestly Zelda music is the best video game music I’ve ever heard. Can’t wait to see some references!
Wow. I thouht I knew most of Zelda's music references, but many in this video was new to me. Great job!
Man I never realised how much the Zelda music writers love reversing old themes up until now.
I truly adore Zelda music and had no clue about some of these! Awesome video Zeltik!! 👏🏼
i wish that music will become an more active gameplay element in upcoming titles, like it was in the older titles.
totally agree with you that Lorule castle has the best final dungeon theme is the best in the series. Learning that it is the Hyrule castle theme backwards blew my mind and then learning that the "got mask" jingle from majoras mask is the "got important item" jingle from the adventure of link finished off what was left of my mind after the first explosion.
That intro reminds me of the “Zelda U” days. Wow, I hope the beta map gets leaked at some point, cuz I’d love to live through that nostalgia
I heard some of them too. I was surprised
Let's get some Tri Force Heroes love going:
1. The looping background melody in Riverside levels is very similar to Midna's Lament
2. Near the end of The Ruins music, it vaguely quotes the original LoZ's dungeon song
3. Den of Trials music also vaguely quotes LoZ's dungeon song
4. Shadow Link battle (plus the victory fanfare and post-battle song) come from Zelda II
5. Coliseum Lobby is similar to a FSA song (I forget which one, sorry)
6. Not a reference, but a rarity: Boss Battle intro uses a quarter-tone
>Zeltik uploads
*today was a good day*
He missed so many! The "wind" flute melody for example is in other games too, like Super Mario Bros 3 and the startup intro screen of Ocarina of Time. (Listen to the Ocarina after the piano)
