I’m a professional crapper, been doing it my entire 73 years all over the USA . Here’s my method. Snap the seat on the empty bucket and don’t remove it. Get some small office size cheep plastic bags , make sure they reach to the bottom with 4” to 6” extra. Now peel off 6 or so bags and drop into the empty bucket with lid attached. Take one bag and slide into the bucket, let the extra overlap the seat and extend a way down the outside. Use a small bit if kitty litter if you want, or you can even drop in some lightly used paper towels to absorb. So now the plastic bag covers the inside, the seat, and extra outside. Do your business, use TP, or baby wipes, or a combination, baby wipes a a good touch as we often don’t shower as much while camping and the help keep some tush freshness. When finished just pull up the bag opening, remove as much air as you can, and tie a tight knot , bag can now be removed, disposed of or placed in another bucket with a screw on lid for future disposal. Try to limit the amount of liquid going into the bag, but you’ll work that out. Double bag if needed. The bag being placed over the seal acts like an ass gasket and keeps the seat clean, ready for next user and no clean up. Extra bags in the bottom are ready for next in line. When traveling, bags, TP, baby wipes, kitty litter can all just ride inside of the bucket, everything clean, handy, and ready to go when you’re ready to go. I just make it a single use bag and no liquid to slouch around, spill, overturn, or weigh down the bag. Added bonus you don’t have to use your precious water. Instead of kitty litter try some wood chips, pellets, or hamster bedding from Tractor Supply.. Side note - don’t try the free doggie pooper bags at the park, they are way too small. Have respect for others when you dispose of the used bags, no one wants to be in contact with your 💩.
Thanks for the info. I use kitty liter because its dry and easy. The bucket I have is from a resturant supply. It has a screw on lid. It works well. FYI.. I use baking soda for the odor.

Good information. I just had an emergency where I needed to use my bucket toilet for 3 days indoors with windows open. Your suggestions will help if there is a next time. ❤
A more advanced method is the 2 bucket system. Not everyone has the room for it, but having 1 for (each) is the ultimate setup. Water and deodorant for pee and “light-weight” dust free cat litter or pellets for the poop.
Im in the process of designing a STEALTH van and decided on a lugaloo toilet and was set on pine pellets as it can last one person about a week WITHOUT any smells. Now after seeing this method im open to trying something else also, although slushing liquid verses almost dry sound not sure! However, that poppuri does sound great regardless of what i decide on. I fond that using any Walmart or target parking lot garbage can is the best easy method of disposal of a bag!

Very informative and helpful! Thank You! I'll be becoming a truck driver soon and doing my homework as I imagine it will be best to have something to use when facilities are not available.
I’d actually recommend using light weight, dust free cat litter if you’re going to be driving around a lot. This version is for extended boondocking (camping in one location for extended time). I’d hate to have it sloshing too much. 🤫

Meeting people and hearing their stories makes this life an awesome community. Your system is awesome and makes great practical sense. I’ve seen and heard so many variations and it’s awesome that we (more than non-mobile dwellers) are so frank and candid. 😊
I’ve actually gone through several systems myself. I have installed an upgraded toilet recently (there’s a video) and keep my bucket system as a back up. My upgrade is uniquely placed but hey.. I’m not an engineer LOL
I wonder if you used pine cat litter or animal bedding pellets. They absorb and deodorise naturually. There's nothing to spill because there is no liquid to dump. Besides if where you need to dump it has municipal compost, it should be easy to dispose of. I like that you mentioned how the toilet lid fits on the luggable loo. This is vital if you are using liquids.
Those are great. I use those means when I’m doing a lot of traveling/driving. I suggest only using this method if parked for extended stays. And sooo right about the lid seal hehe 😉
Yes, I was thinking the same thing...would rather put a little kitty litter in the bottom of the bag and add a little more after each pee or poo. Then just throw into a public garbage can every day or two. Public garbage cans are easy to find.
There are biodegradable drop ins or powders that can be used instead-the car litter gets heavy and wood chips can tear the bag (and you will leave a trail 🤣-my opinion)
That’s great advice. I currently use a 2 toilet system (1 for each) and use only dust-free “light-weight” cat litter for that one. Huge difference between the 2 cat litters (one that can barely be lifted and the other feels nearly empty already when it’s full).
@@margaretbarcenas1725 The pine based cat litter I have used is not sharp or prickly. Otherwise, the cats wouldn't use it. I do get your point about weight, though.
I’ll be honest, I had a little anxiety while making this video and a couple of others but glad I made them. This was the one that (after completed) took me several days just to click on “upload” LOL
You’re awesome. And you’re welcome 😁. Also, I’ve been doing this for a few years now so if you have any questions unrelated at all, don’t hesitate to ask. Like my profile says.. my (hope) is to help and inspire as much as possible.Or at minimum be brutally honest about something you may not want to hear (but at least it’s truthful) LOL
I do. When traveling. I only use that system when parked for a week or so of boondocking. I do use a 2 bucket system (1 for urine and 1 for poop) when I’m traveling. This system is just an alternate way of doing it. Not necessarily the best way 😊 If I’m honest.. 80% of the time I try to use public restrooms when available and avoid having to use my own facilities 😉
I'll save your video for reference of the chemicals used; thank you for that. I'm going to also point out that you wore gloves to clean to Luggable Loo, but then contaminated everything else you touched by handling them with those dirty gloves.
I’ve tried that too. But it’s so much easier to properly dispose of things this way. Unless you dispose of human waste in a trash can. Assuming a nomad anyway. But all bathrooms and outhouses have trash cans, so it’s easy to throw out the bag with no hassle. But all of these ways do work 😊
Topaz Z Great question. Mine has a strong seal... but I really should have explained this in the video. I set it up this way when I am camping out for several days (2 to 5 days). I dump it before I drive around. You’re absolutely right. When I am on a driving trip I act like my van is a Car and just make stops once in a while. No different than before I had the van. I really should have said that. The only time I drive with it is the very short distance to dump it. No more.
I was just reading to add pine bedding pellets to the toilet instead of peatmoss or sawdust etc..carefully though they expand a great deal. The stop the smell apparently. US under $10. Canada $35-$70...yuppppp
Why not just change the bag every time? Bags dont cost that much and you can go super cheap since you're only using them once. I use simple plastic grocery bags. (For free!)
Well made video. I'm curious - when emptying the bucket into a porta-john, do you dump it and leave the bag in the bucket somehow? What do you do with the used bag? Thank you!!
Great question. I actually personally use two bags. When empty I throw out the top bag and it’s ready for the second bag. I do that as double protection for any leaks. Not that it’s been a problem I just overthink
No. Not biodegradable. I empty the contents into a portapotty and then use a latex glove to put the inner bag into a trash can. I use one bucket for urine and one for feces when traveling though because it sloshes around and the smell is too much. But when “boondocking” or parking in one place for an extended time the potpourri spray works great. Sorry if that sounded complicated.
In other words 1 bucket urine with deodorizer 1 bucket feces with cat litter or dirt (When traveling) 1 bucket for both when stationary. Sounds like a hassle, but everything VanLife is.. more routines than normal.
Pine chips, dust free cat litter, etc are awesome. I use those methods in my 2-bucket system (1 for each) when I’m on the go. I only use this method when on extended stays. It’s not the preferred but just one option out there. I would have made a video using cat litter or wood chips but I assumed most know about those 2 (but I could be wrong)
So you're dumping the "contents", not disposing of the bag? Do you throw the bag away later, in a normal garbage can? Then start with a fresh bag and chemical brew as shown? Thanks!
Hahaha I love your safe proper terms. Yes. That’s exactly how it’s done. I’ve not seen an outhouse/port-a-potty yet that doesn’t have a trash can nearby. The potty’s are everywhere (parks, construction sites, national parks, dog parks, etc. Also... I don’t recommend using the toilet this way if you plan on doing a lot of driving. Only for extended stays at a location. Another tip, I put 3 or 4 bag liners in so each time I toss one it’s already ready for the next round. If you get a chance check out some of my (Places to park, stealth parking) etc. hope you have an awesome week.
An upgrade. Many sloshing around will make it a bad idea. So I would upgrade to 2 buckets. 1) urine (with deodorant) 2) poop (with dust free cat litter) This is actually what I do now. Because the system in this video doesn’t work if there’s any sloshing or bumpy movement. I hope to upgrade a new video with this info too.
Well.. I didn't know I'd be talking about poop today. 🥴 I prefer the bag and wet wipe method so I can get it out of my van quickly. I have a 3 gallon bucket which is not as comfy because it's shorter, but is actually better because humans are meant to squat for better evacuation. Not my favorite subject, but a nescessary function of life.
@@n8nomad419 Thanks. I got the name from an old saying.. "you're only lost if you care where you are". I'll be posting a tour of my van, and hitting the road soon. Take care!
how many times you poop in that before change bag? I don't think I'd drive around especially off road without the bag completely tied up, but if I tied it then chances are I won't open it back up to use it 2nd time. That means I'd be wasting 1 big plastic bag every day or two. :(
I love the more candid questions 😊. For 1 person, if drinking plenty of water and healthy BM it could comfortably last 4 or 5 days before slowly dumping into a porta-potty. Driving shouldn’t be a problem because the bucket will be less than half full still. ((Advanced Method= Use 2 buckets. 1 for pee, and 2 for BM and use cat litter for the BM)) that system would last 2 weeks easily. But you need room for 2 buckets.
I don’t take the bag out until after I’ve emptied the bucket into an outhouse. It’s mostly there to lessen the need to clean the actual bucket. Unless I’m using dust-free cat litter. Since I only use this method when I am not planning to drive around (not a good idea to slosh it haha)
Just a reminder, this system is not preferred if you’re driving around. Just when camped at one location for a while. I use cat litter when I am driving a lot or public bathroom 🚽 as much as possible. 🤣 I never thought I’d have so many conversations about going to the bathroom. I love it hehe
I’m at a loss. Maybe 1 or 2 handles mounted somewhere that can be pulled on. I know there are times I’m so cold and so tired that even simple tasks can be hard. Wish I knew. I think I may need to reconsider Van life myself when I reach a certain age.
I have an idea, my thought exactly. I think one of those clasps able porta potty that already have a seat and hand rails that is used in hospital bedside. Remove the potty pan and replace it with the bucket. I think that would work. Just a thought.
Wal-Mart. They sell lids in camping section. Sometimes buckets there too. Or buckets or paint buckets in hardware section. Paint buckets come in different sizes too
I feel like there’s something odd about buckets LOL. I’ve had a lid that fit well on 1 out of 5 Lowe’s buckets and every other generic bucket. It’s so odd when it feels like all of the buckets would be the same but there’s some small variation that causes it. I had a bucket get a crack in the side after yrs of use and that was an odd discovery. But you’re right I’ve seen them at some Walmart’s and not others.
I am wondering why you don't just do a composting bucket toilet???...so much easier. I have lived in a van and tiny house and prefer NEVER to mix urine with feces..by separating them you have way less mess and keep the smell down. Easy to separate..ton's of vids on it.
Your SO right. I have since upgraded to a 2 bucket system. 1 for each and using deodorizer for urine and dust free cat litter for the other. I NEED to make an updated video. Thank you for the reminder. Truly
I don’t monetize my videos (even though YT puts commercials anyway) and no links to profit from purchases. But you can find Luggable Loo on Amazon. Id highly suggest you get 2 if you have the room. 1 for urine and 1 for the poops using cat litter. Simply because it will last you several weeks that way and no smell 👍. That’s what I use now. And if you have any other questions about Van Life (at all) please ask. Talking and sharing with others is the only reason I do this. Well, and the hopes of one day meeting with a group of 10 or 15 van dwellers together on an adventure someday 😁
I personally use the wet wipes that are water soluble. Regular TP actually turns into a thick paste after a while. (That’s actually an amazing question!) thank you So are you wanting to do this lifestyle someday or new at it?
I went to school to be a nurse. But I only work 2 days a week (because that’s all I need when I have almost no expenses. While building it I was working a minimum wage job full time and spent my days off working on the van. I take summers off though so I can relax and enjoy nature.
Hmmm so how about demonstrating the actual disposal of said poop. Seems like it would be messy to empty the bag, but I assume you can’t just put the whole bag in a portable potty. And is that even legal? So many poop questions, so little time.
It’s always worked fine. Bag stays suctioned inside and toss it in the trash after. All end where it would end if using regular house trash cans. But.. I do have a new system. I use 2 buckets. One for each. But I know not everyone has room for 2.
No no. I dump it in outhouses. Which are already filled with human feces and urine and companies dispose of it properly in sewer systems. The bag only ever has trace amounts of urine after dumping it into the outhouse.
But even still.. people collectively put cat poop, cat litter, dog poop, hamster, Guinea pig, rabbit, bird etc poops in regular garbage cans on an epic level every single day. So I’d guess human poop amounts to WAY less in comparison in regular trash cans in the big picture. And it’s probably the Most biodegradable substance ever found in trash cans compared to anything else in there. So I feel safe doing so
Only enough to keep the floaters under the fragrant oil surface. - the OPTIMAL way though.. is the have 2 toilets. 1 for each (urine & feces). Urine with the deodorizer chemical (no water) and feces with cat litter. But some people don’t have the space for 2. I personally use the 2 bucket system. And also this way (using water) should only be used for extended stays, not if driving around. Hope that helps 😁
I work part time (2 or 3 days a week) during the winter and then I live up on the mountain where it’s cooler in the hot seasons. It costs me about 600 a month for all expenses now that my van is paid off. And would be less if I didn’t splurge now and then. I save for the summers. It’s like a 4 month vacation every year. Just me and nature.
@@n8nomad419 Do you do like seasonal work? Do you try out a new job each winter? I have a part time job where i only work 3 days as well but ive had it for five years and without a degree i just now am getting paid decently. I've been trying to save. But with my hours being only 18 a week ive had to dip into savings just to pay my bills which makes me sick. I don't have many bills just food, gas, storage, car insurance and car payment, but i cant see them going down much within the year. Especially if i buy a van with a payment. At the start of the year im either going to reluctantly ask for more hours and just work another year to save money, or use the four days im off to try to make money doing something i like. though it wont be stable. it might be a chance to find a job i could do on the road before i actually quit my real job. But i have no idea where to start there... cause even though i only work 3 days a week, i still would be confined to short trips here and there like in the state unless i fly somewhere which would be really expensive... but i couldnt go across the country for a month or two which is what i wanna do. Be gone for 6 months or so and then come back to my home town to visit before i set off on another adventure... i do get two weeks off a year, but i just dont wanna be restrained by my job anymore even though i know i need money. im just kind of afraid to leave my job but i know thats the only way to have non stop travel for a while i guess. Im afraid if i do just work seasonal i wont be able to save enough for the rest of the year, and end up using it to just get by during the times im working... especially if im making what im making now or less as well as similar bills... sorry for the long post, its just these are the things i worry about and try to plan for.
1 idea.. is to sacrifice the short-term for the long-term. Work a LOT until you’re debt free. Then that frees you up to live an easier lifestyle with much smaller monthly expenses. It’s much harder for the short term but so freeing then after. That’s what I did. I was for a couple years working avg 60hrs/week and almost no time off for a long time. But once my van payments and all other debts were gone I felt so free! It may not be the best answer or the one you wanted. But it’s the best I know.
Oh, and to answer your first question.. I work only weekends with Mon-Fri off during the winter months. So I guess that’s a seasonal situation. I have most of summers off. My life used to be filled with ambitions and intense work ethic.. but now I just love the simple things (walks, library audiobooks, video games, and visiting with friends). All of my joys in life are free and I like it that way. My dog passed and I never got another pet, which is the reason I stopped making videos. But I’m happy, enjoying the simplicities in life. And trying hard not to watch world news which is so depressing. Although it still sucks me back in from time to time. 🥴
I only poor water in first. Never after when in use. And no on splash back. And remember.. I ONLY use this method if (stopped and camping for several days) and not when driving around (unless to dump it). If you’re driving a lot then just use Cat Litter etc. I boondock for a week at a time.
Absolutely. I now use a 2 bucket system. 1) urine with the blue chemical deodorant 2) feces with cat litter. The problem with using only 1 bucket with cat litter is that the urine is so much that the cat litter can’t absorb even 1/2 of it. Also I use the super light-weight and dust free cat litter. Huge upgrade from the heavy stuff that makes dust everywhere.
Sounds great! Keep up the dream.. write it down and don’t give up. Talk with me anytime about questions, worries or if you just need encouragement 😊. Happy Easter 🐣

Nice! Thank you..! 💯👍
Love it.
Please put links to the products in the description. It really helps!
You’re absolutely right. Thank you for that. (Updated) 😁
Yes! Please!
Great video on very necessary topic.
I’ll be honest, I had a little anxiety while making this video and a couple of others but glad I made them. This was the one that (after completed) took me several days just to click on “upload” LOL
Well this person is glad you did upload it! There you go...while it may not seem relevant to you, it was a wealth of info to me! Thanx again!

Like my profile says.. my (hope) is to help and inspire as much as possible.Or at minimum be brutally honest about something you may not want to hear (but at least it’s truthful) LOL
Helpful video... and yes, you are sorta funny!
Thank you. 😊 I do also have videos that I make a fool of myself. But that’s part of the fun.
How about using pine pellets or kitty litter instead of the stinky chemicals? 🤷♀️
I do. When traveling. I only use that system when parked for a week or so of boondocking. I do use a 2 bucket system (1 for urine and 1 for poop) when I’m traveling. This system is just an alternate way of doing it. Not necessarily the best way 😊
If I’m honest.. 80% of the time I try to use public restrooms when available and avoid having to use my own facilities 😉
Yes Pine Pellets better than Kitty Litter... cost less in the long run too.
We have an electric transit connect, got the LOO...use baby wipes, when you need to duce...awsomeness
Isn’t it awesome. Who else can have an intimately detailed discussion about their toilet protocols? For us.. that’s just normal 😁

big cheers and hi from Mumbai/India
Hello to you. I love watching documentaries about India. I want very much to visit there someday.
@@n8nomad419 you are most welcome. just hope this virus ends. it's a sad time of our lives. pls, be safe. enjoying your video. cheers.
I'll save your video for reference of the chemicals used; thank you for that. I'm going to also point out that you wore gloves to clean to Luggable Loo, but then contaminated everything else you touched by handling them with those dirty gloves.
Just a demonstration.
But good catch. Thank you for your observation.
Interesting I’ve never seen anyone use the blue stuff in a bucket only cat litter or sawdust Thanks .... I have not used my emergency bucket yet 😄
I’ve tried that too. But it’s so much easier to properly dispose of things this way. Unless you dispose of human waste in a trash can. Assuming a nomad anyway. But all bathrooms and outhouses have trash cans, so it’s easy to throw out the bag with no hassle. But all of these ways do work 😊
N8 Nomad you don’t worry about it splashing around and getting out ... the one I have the lid falls off (Walmart brand)
No more.
N8 Nomad awesome thank you 😊
I was just reading to add pine bedding pellets to the toilet instead of peatmoss or sawdust etc..carefully though they expand a great deal. The stop the smell apparently. US under $10. Canada $35-$70...yuppppp
Why not just change the bag every time? Bags dont cost that much and you can go super cheap since you're only using them once. I use simple plastic grocery bags. (For free!)
I do. I toss it in the trash after it’s emptied each time 😊
Well made video.
@@n8nomad419 Is the inner bag that you throw away biodegradable? If so,has it ever broke down with your chemical solution prematurely?
In other words
1 bucket urine with deodorizer
1 bucket feces with cat litter or dirt
(When traveling)
1 bucket for both when stationary.
Sounds like a hassle, but everything VanLife is.. more routines than normal.
@@n8nomad419 that made perfect sense. Thank you for responding.
pine chips?
Pine chips, dust free cat litter, etc are awesome. I use those methods in my 2-bucket system (1 for each) when I’m on the go. I only use this method when on extended stays. It’s not the preferred but just one option out there. I would have made a video using cat litter or wood chips but I assumed most know about those 2 (but I could be wrong)
You can buy most at Walmart or on Amazon...
True 😊
Came for the luggable loo information stayed for the humor. Great video! No alternative uses at the end of the video? lol
Haha thanks.
Should I have followed through on that LOL
@@n8nomad419 I would watch it. LOL
Thanks... I’m glad you like my dorky humor haha. I knew someone would appreciate it 😁
So you're dumping the "contents", not disposing of the bag?
The VanLife Toilet Workout!
😁
i can finally throw away my empty water bottles while cruising on my tiny SIB dinghy after this video, hooray.
Lol
Been there, done that.
I tried, it stink in the next bomb drop, as it's not yet full, please help, how to kill the foul smell? Thank you
An upgrade. Many sloshing around will make it a bad idea. So I would upgrade to 2 buckets.
1) urine (with deodorant)
2) poop (with dust free cat litter)
This is actually what I do now. Because the system in this video doesn’t work if there’s any sloshing or bumpy movement. I hope to upgrade a new video with this info too.
Also.. this method (should) work if you’re using enough Poupore spray (before using it). Mine does fine as long as it’s not jostled
Well.. I didn't know I'd be talking about poop today. 🥴
I prefer the bag and wet wipe method so I can get it out of my van quickly. I have a 3 gallon bucket which is not as comfy because it's shorter, but is actually better because humans are meant to squat for better evacuation. Not my favorite subject, but a nescessary function of life.
You’re absolutely right though.
I really like you’re name by the way “Never Lost” 😊
@@n8nomad419 Thanks. I got the name from an old saying.. "you're only lost if you care where you are". I'll be posting a tour of my van, and hitting the road soon. Take care!
I’ll subscribe and look forward to the videos.
Is the plastic bag biodegradable? If so, when does the bad biodegrade from use?
There are bio ones. And that would be a much better idea. Also pine chips work great but a bit more expensive.
When do you change the plastic liner?
how many times you poop in that before change bag?
That amount of liquid requires a lot of confidence in the bag!!!
Um, it looked like you dumped the contents but left the bag in the bucket. Do you reuse the bag or do you just find a place to toss it, as well??
I just toss the bad separately in a trash can.
Just a reminder, this system is not preferred if you’re driving around. Just when camped at one location for a while. I use cat litter when I am driving a lot or public bathroom 🚽 as much as possible. 🤣 I never thought I’d have so many conversations about going to the bathroom. I love it hehe
Any ideas for arm rest for an older person to use to get up
I’m at a loss.
Where did you get that top lid?
Amazon. You can get them as a set (bucket and lid) or separate.
I line my bucket with two bags.
Truly
Where do you get the cover and seats? Did I miss that part?
Curious as I'm a total newbie, do you use regular toilet paper?
I personally use the wet wipes that are water soluble. Regular TP actually turns into a thick paste after a while. (That’s actually an amazing question!) thank you
So are you wanting to do this lifestyle someday or new at it?
YES... there is no toilet to flush it down with.... no problem.
Truthfully... you could dispose of the toilet paper in a walmart trash bag and throw that away every day...
How do you support yourself ? Did you save ?
I went to school to be a nurse. But I only work 2 days a week (because that’s all I need when I have almost no expenses. While building it I was working a minimum wage job full time and spent my days off working on the van. I take summers off though so I can relax and enjoy nature.
Great video!! >>> Reliance Luggable Loo!!! REI, etc., for like $22 _not_on sale. I can't stand flush toilets :)
@@n8nomad419 guess it makes no difference than tossing dog poop. Just seems gross to me for the poor guys that work at the
dump.
So I feel safe doing so
Nice job. 👍. You have tattoos ?
Oh for Pete's sake get some kitty litter...all that liquid
why do you need to put water in it?
Only enough to keep the floaters under the fragrant oil surface. - the OPTIMAL way though.. is the have 2 toilets. 1 for each (urine & feces). Urine with the deodorizer chemical (no water) and feces with cat litter. But some people don’t have the space for 2. I personally use the 2 bucket system. And also this way (using water) should only be used for extended stays, not if driving around. Hope that helps 😁
How do you make money on the road? To pay for like gas and food? I want van life to be my next step but I don’t wanna rely on just savings.
Also by pouring that water in the bottom of the bucket do you ever get splash back?
I only poor water in first. Never after when in use. And no on splash back. And remember.. I ONLY use this method if (stopped and camping for several days) and not when driving around (unless to dump it). If you’re driving a lot then just use Cat Litter etc. I boondock for a week at a time.
Can you use kitty litter in the bucket?
Absolutely. I now use a 2 bucket system.
1) urine with the blue chemical deodorant
2) feces with cat litter.
The problem with using only 1 bucket with cat litter is that the urine is so much that the cat litter can’t absorb even 1/2 of it. Also I use the super light-weight and dust free cat litter. Huge upgrade from the heavy stuff that makes dust everywhere.
luggable loo is $55 in 2022 ,,i will deal with the handle
