So the Capcom Fighting Collection is coming, and its bringing Darkstalkers back to basically every single system out there, and with quality online rollback netcode to boot! So I figure now is as good a time as any to re-introduce Darkstalkers to people, with this Vampire Savior tutorial! The overall system basics for the most part are actually quite easy, its the fast pace and memorable characters that have kept Darkstalkers alive over the decades. That said, hope this video helps you out, and hope you enjoy your time with the truly classic franchise Darkstalkers!
May I ask what filter this is? I’m struggling to pick one from the various Capcom collections that looks decent on a big OLED display. Thanks for your service!
I've been playing this so much! I'll be honest though I forgot how hard the very 1st Darkstalkers is 😅. Even on the easiest difficulty the cpu is cheap lol or I just suck with Bishamon. Making it difficult to beat with no continue
10:55 I just love how this game never really takes itself seriously with its special moves. Seriously creative in design and a technical marvel when it comes to individual frame counts and the attention to detail from the animations.
Honestly impressed you managed to avoid mentioning/showing Demitri's infamous Midnight Bliss even once during this breakdown. Seriously, though, great stuff as always.
I'm really looking forward to playing the Capcom Fighting Collection. I tried Darkstalkers Resurrection back on the PS3 but couldn't get to grips with it but I think your guides are really going to help me out this time! Cheers!
So as of the time of me writing this, there will be a "Choose a Main" style of video where I go over every character in Vampire Savior and give you the basics of what they are about, and that should be live TOMORROW! And yes for the Fightcade people, I am very aware you could always play this on fightcade, however playing it on Playstation, Xbox, and Switch is a pretty fairly modern concept so let people have their fun ok?
Looking forward to that! Would love to see a guide to Sasquatch at any point. Good luck with that BB Hood/Bulleta guide though, she's a bit of a tough character if memory serves me correctly
Honestly I appreciate you breaking down the combo system, not many people talk about those and it's one of the big aspects that make or break a game for me. This one looks fun!
How is it your timing is always godlike? I was literally just going over the basics of this game with a friend who's never played a Darkstalkers game and this seems like the perfect guide to get started with! Thank you Roof, I always enjoy these videos of yours!
I’ve never played these games before so I’m SUPER excited to play them lol the only character I’m even remotely familiar with somewhat is Morrigan. I’m excited to see all the wacky characters :)
@PositiveEnergy Dude ABSOLUTELY lol I love what little they’ve shown so far and am super excited to see their new take on it. So many good things coming up!!
Exfuckingcuse me, did the sasquatch man just grab the beefy hunk vampire, cover him in ice, and ride him around as a dog sled for his cute little ice dogs????? Fuck my free time I'm playing this.
This is definitely the version of Darkstalkers that led me to buy this collection. Having an official version that could become competitive is exciting. I appreciate your guide because even though I know this game pretty well, there are some nuggets in there that helped me understand the mechanics better. I can't wait until Friday to get my copy!
The thing about Darkstalkers that I love the most by a mile is the chain system. I just can't understand why modern fighting games still rely on much more complex links than the friendlier chain combos, just like the Alpha series in SF also implemented
Actually chains in this game are also kinda bad because you can only special cancel on non-chained attacks, meaning you have to link into specials or link whatever normal into specials. This means that most combos that are not a straight chain into 2hk knockdown have some form of a link sometimes even frame perfect and the polling on this game is very bad so sometimes inputs just arent registered
I bought the collection two months ago and I'm sooooooooo excited that it's finally coming out. I loooooooove the character animations and music of this game. I suck hard at fighting games, but this is one I want to take seriously. Hope the population doesn't dwindle too fast, or at least gets enough momentum to create larger Discord servers. Thank you a million for this guide. :D By the way, are there any plans for a character overview? I feel it would be extremely helpful for this game in particular, since they all play very differently.
Yes there will be a character overview! That should be tomorrow. As for the population, maybe some of the games in the collection might die off(spoiler its red earth its not actually a good game) but darkstalkers has proven the test of time if just through emulation with 25+ years of competitive play, so there will always be someone to play vampire savior against
Even if people don't stick around for the CFC, the Vampire Savior community is alive and well on FightCade. Which also has A++ rollback and an international playerbase There are some great Discords out as well with new players always looking for games, and I'm sure lots of them will be on the CFC as well
Wow! It's fascinating seeing how many fighting game mechanics carried over from Darkstalkers! Some of them are pretty strange too, like how gatlings work, or the health, and the Pushblock input! I'll have to think about whether or not I wanna try it for myself! ^^
Fantastic, clear and concise tutorial. Thank you for not starting with "here are the buttons, here's how to do a hadouken move" like so many others do. It's just amazing how many ideas from this game were cannibalized into other games, including other Capcom games.
I am absolutely impressed by the art style and animations. There is soo much detail in the animations this brings a lot of character invthe game and it's comical and absurd at the same time. And gives the game and fighters lot of personality. I have so much fun even just to watch the crazy stuff they are doing 😂 just cool 😎
One more little detail about air block. Air blocking has very little blockstun in VSAV. Meaning if you air block, you can almost immediately counterattack. If you're on the offensive and the opponent air blocks, you should keep chaining attacks until after the opponent touches the ground to keep yourself safe. Trying to air-to-air someone with a single button like in other games can get blown up pretty hard.
Finally, I will have the chance to *actually* play this game. I always was interested in Darkstalkers because all the characters look super interesting, but it never was on PC before.
Thanks Rooflemonger. I love the quality of your content and how accessible you make everything feel. Hopefully Capcom will make getting in to SFVI this accessible. Anyway, you're incredible valuable asset to the FGC. Thanks!
The uniqueness of each character can't be stressed enough. At locals I tend to explain Vsav as "Tiers exist but they don't matter, because every character is busted in their own way".
Just started emulating saturn games on my steam deck and randomly downloaded this one on a whim. Wasnt aware that it was relatively popular and it actually has a dedicated following. Makes sense because its honestly one of my favorite saturn games so far Also is this gameplay from the collection that released? Because this is definitely a rom of (or at the very least based on) the saturn version because you can notice the transparency workarounds that sega usually did a lot of during this era. I honestly prefer this style though over the more clean-looking and generic ps1 transparencies. The graphics of the saturn in general are honestly beautiful to me even to this day. The saturn focused more on textures while the n64 and ps1 focused more on polygons.
Glad to see this guide on your channel to help new players! Just wanna give two addendums: Special cancels can't be done from many normals; they follow similar rules to Street Fighter as opposed to say ASW games. Dark forces are invincible on startup and can be manually deactivated. They have a lot less recovery if you manually do it as opposed to letting the meter run out!
Bro, you are a god for creating this! I've been a fan of Darkstalkers since the beginning but have only sparingly had the game in my personal gaming collection to play it. And back then, it wasn't an online pvp game so I didn't take trying to learn all the nitty gritty details too seriously. Now that it IS, with the Capcom fighting collection, your guide is very helpful for me relearning the game and hopefully doing better online matches. Thank you!
Heelllooo! I love this series. I was lucky enough to have vampire hunter in my high school cafeteria in the 90's. Most everyone played Jon Talbain but I'm a Demitri main for reasons.
9 min in and i have to say top tier fuckin video!! I learned a whole lot granted i didnt know shit about the game even though i played it as a kid and always loved the game but never owned it until the ps3 version but didnt play much lol good job!!
Friend of mine had us try this game last night on Fightcade. Man, it's weird, but I didn't know anything and he didn't know much about it either We'll try again after watching this, thanks!!
YES A guide for my personal favorite Capcom Fighting Game franchise. Can't thank you enough for this detailed guide. Hope it will inspire others to play or at try this fantastic series of games.
Dude...I was already excited about this collection but now I'm freaking. I'm almost 40, I've been playing 2d's my whole life without having ever played a Dark game and this old ass game might become my main game. Plus- look at the graphics!
The best thing about VSav, on top of it’s great presentation and roster, is how it marries the speed and movement of MvC with the short and to the point combos of ST. No other game plays like this, and if you like blazing fast neutral more than you do long fancy combos, this is the game for you!
Good looking out as always. Darkstalkers Resurrection is on PS Plus Classics (Third Strike and Puzzle Fighter are too) so I just gave the series a shot for the first time. Was wary of the online because it's only available via streaming, but it's a great way to practice in preparation for the new bundle.
Thanks for these videos! Very informative and the best channel for this type of thing. Keep up the great work! Fighting games are freaking hard but I love them so much. I hope you continue videos like this! I’m a casual that could be mistaken for a competitive player that’s how obsessed I am but I’m not very good at them because I play so many. Thanks again! These videos are Gold!
Looks like a really fun game. There was one at a pizza place I went to growing up(had to plead with my father to play the game lol). I do think I’m gonna wait for a sale though, DNF duel might be the game for me this month.
I've said in a previous video that your "10 strangest fighting game characters" is what got me into Darkstalkers. I find for fighting games all it can take is that one character to get me interested, and I look forward to playing around with them. (It's Q Bee in case that wasn't obvious). Also my first time playing this game but very much look forward to how all the other characters do, and also hope Capcom revitalizes this franchise too. I love your guides. They're very well presented and appreciated.
Man, I’ve been a fan of this series since it was first in Arcades. I always used Anakaris but was better with Demitri. None of my mates gave this series any love but I was obsessed.
What a fantastic tutorial you've put together. I've just bought the switch version of the collection and I'm really impressed with darkstalkers as a series.
Burning Question: are you a Sasquatch main? He's Canadian, he likes bananas,...or am I reaching? Lol Great video as always and can't wait to see more love for this series. Hope you and everyone has a blessed day!
I do like Sasquatch yeah. When the collection comes out though I may try Victor, as I never really got any chance to play him in a real setting over the years.
Thanks for the hard work man! any chance to 'choose your main' video style? I know they are very time consuming, but they are simply amazing, they help a lot to know what to expect when facing any character
Correction for push block success chances: 3 Buttons: 25% chance 4 Buttons : 67.5% chance 5 Buttons: 90.6% chance 6 Buttons: 100% chance This is because: the third button has a 25% chance to trigger, the fourth button has a 50% chance to trigger, etc. So, using that information, your probability of triggering a push block on the fourth press is actually 67.5%. Likewise, your actual probability of getting a push block by your fifth press is ~91%. This is why push block technques using five buttons are still valid.
Thank you so much for doing this Roof! This is my favorite fighting game of all time but I haven't played it in years so this was absolutely perfect, as always thanks for all the hard work you do with your fighting game content!
So i played Darkstalkers Chaos Tower for psp and i mostly play the Characters with the 'DS3(SP)Type' moveset which is the Vampire Saviour 2 controls where 'Dark Force' works different. You have to command input the characters DF ability (the buff or unique abilities they normally get with 'Dark Force' in DS3) sort of like an install and this version of Dark Force boosts your attacks ex specials indicted by the characters flashng red and some super moves get an extra attack animations. So its kind of like the max mode in the KOF series.
That fact your doing makes me happy because I never got to play the game before and now with these guides I will be fully prepared for the game and get my butt wiped. And we use butt cause on this channel we family friendly here lol
@Rooflemonger I’m so excited to pick this game up! I’ve always been interested in the Darkstalkers franchise but, seeing as I didn’t grow up in the 90’s when they were super popular I never played any of them except a bit of that 360 port a decade or so back called Darkstalkers:Resurrection I believe and I remember I gave up on that one pretty quick because either the net code was horrible or there wasn’t really anyone playing it that didn’t hand me my ass on a silver plater so I decided now with this release is the perfect time to get into this series. Probably won’t pick it up until a few things are done where I get my Xbox Series X in from Microsoft website as well as I sell my Xbox one to make some solid cash off of it to get this game as well as maybe one more if I get enough cash from it so, I’m hoping it will only be a week late or so before I can get into this awesome collection. I also want to get into fighting games as a whole particularly Capcom ones before SF6 comes out which I’ve always loved the series as a casual fan but I want to get into it from a more competitive standpoint when SF6 launches.
MAN I CAN'T WAIT!!! I had this on Saturn back in the day. In my opinion best version of the game. Ran arcade perfect, and had ALL THE CHARACTERS from VS 1 and 2, intros from all the arcade entries. Just a wonderful port! Man I do wish they would've combined all the characters like they did for the Saturn back in the day but this is awesome! Been begging for all these games since the Saturn days so, I couldn't be more hype!
I've been saying the same thing. An option for combining both rosters like the Saturn port (which I bought on launch back then) would be greatly appreciated. The same could be said for Mech-Gouki in Cyberbots! Maybe one day we could also get a port of Alpha 3 Max (I don't care what the A3 purists say. It's fun!) I'm so HYPED to play this again. We can only hope for great rollback netcode.
@@SuperKokuJin916 OH MAN! I was so disappointed when I learned Mech-Gouki wasn't in the arcade version! It's like c'mon Capcom, just give us a lil more please. 😂but i WILL NOT complain! This hits, then DNF DUEL 4 days later. My summer is filled sorry kids! I think the netcode will be good, hopefully at least as good as SFV is now. Hopefully they've worked out their rollback issues and know how to apply it moving forward.
@@SuperKokuJin916 I so badly want a3 max to come out. The extra characters alone make it superior (especially my main Fei Long). I get that these are arcade classic renditions but the Saturn version having every character in vampire savior and max 3 having the additional characters to me make them the best versions of said games and want them to be released
I will have a "choose a main" video where I give an overview on all the characters at the very least yes. If I have time after that, maybe a couple characters might get a more dedicated guide
Would’ve been nice if Capcom also included Vampire Chronicle (and the JoJo CPS3 games) since they included Hyper Street Fighter 2, but I’ll forgive them if they include it in a Marvel fighting collection(CotA to UMvC 3)…and (while they’re at it) an SNK vs collection with SVC Chaos(and soundtrack bonus). I don’t think I’m asking for much 🤷🏻♂️
I cannot thank you enough for this video. I've wanted to get into this game on a deeper level for SOOOO long but there haven't really been any good tutorial videos or guides out there and the game's unique mechanics are a bit hard to grasp for a newcomer, plus FightCade is like jumping straight into a pool of hungry sharks. I'm so excited to be able to practice knowing what I'm doing mechanically now.
Never heard of it before today. Just found it adventuring through some MAME roms on retroarch and instantly fell in love with it. Not sure what versions to play, but I'm going to try out Darkstalkers 3 on PlayStation. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open to them!
Actually some of the dark force are similar to others example Q-Bee's and Jedah's dark force gives them flight, or Hsien-Ko's and Rikuo's which just gives them super armor
Vampire Savior was my first darkstalkers game. There was this movie theater my family and I would often go to and while they were grabbing food at concessions, I'd ask for some quarters to use at the mini arcade they had and that's basically how I discovered John Talbain
Hi Rooflemonger, I love this game, bought it back in 1998 when it came out here in the UK. Ever since I have always had a soft heart for it. Even though I am very familiar with Vampire saviour I learned some things by watching this video. This is an exemplary beginners guide.
I’m INCREDIBLY interested in vampire savior but I play primarily on PlayStation so I’m not sure it’s worth $30 to play one game that might not have almost any players
Mann I hate how all 3 games are different. Demtri fire was more powerful in Darkstalkers 1. But it's fast in Saviors 🤔. I like the psp version of Darkstalkers how it gave you a choice on which version you wanted your character to be.
This is awesome, I’ve been wanting to get into this game for awhile and I really think with it being a month until Halloween time now might be the perfect time to get into this game.
Anybody know why you can't pre order or even purchase the digital copy on the Playstation store 🤔? Even when you go to the official website to pre order digital for playstation is grayed out.
Is there crossplay? I got the PC version and would love it if I could play with friends on other platforms. Rooflemonger always surprises with his extensive breakdowns. It's been nearly 20 years since I've last played any Stalker game and this helped immensely. Happy Canada Day and Happy Independence Day everyone. 🗽🎆
I love the art style and characters of this game but I never got the chance to play it back in the day. What turns me off today is the fact that I'm sure people have been playing it for decades. What chances do I actually have to be competitive? Can I even learn anything when people will be swiping the floor with my face before I even understand what is happening?
Great video dude! You should link the Discord, we have great beginner events, community nights, a LOT of resources, beginner matchmaking, etc. All the top players are there, so I'd recommend linking it in the description!
So the Capcom Fighting Collection is coming, and its bringing Darkstalkers back to basically every single system out there, and with quality online rollback netcode to boot! I'm really looking forward to playing the Capcom Fighting Collection. I tried Darkstalkers Resurrection back on the PS3 but couldn't get to grips with it but I think your guides are really going to help me out this time! Cheers!

Just pulled out my old PS1 and found a copy of Darkstalkers 3 that I had forgotten about, this video was a lifesaver for getting into it...tysm!
Seeing a DARKSTALKERS guide in 2022 that prepares people for a release even if it's a re-release is crazy but so great !
I’ve never played these games before so I’m SUPER excited to play them lol the only character I’m even remotely familiar with somewhat is Morrigan. I’m excited to see all the wacky characters :)

I'm so happy i can finally own every Darkstalkers game. Going to buy this physically for PS4 and Switch but I will be playing this on Steam though lol
darkstalkers rule #01: dont get too much in love with it, there will be no sequel =(
The real Darkstalkers sequel is the friends we made along the way
Can't make a sequel to perfection
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR TAKING THE TIMW TO DO THIS, I WANT TO MASTER THIS GAME, ALREADY PREORDERED IT ON SWITCH, JUST WAITING FOR THE RELEASE
Needed something like this back in the Chaos Tower days. Thanks Rooflemonger
Exfuckingcuse me, did the sasquatch man just grab the beefy hunk vampire, cover him in ice, and ride him around as a dog sled for his cute little ice dogs????? Fuck my free time I'm playing this.
God, we need a new one. Bring it back with a their goofyness, and that MK edge. It would be a hit.
Would love a new game of this.such a cool idea

Also my first time playing this game but very much look forward to how all the other characters do, and also hope Capcom revitalizes this franchise too. I love your guides. They're very well presented and appreciated.
Man, I’ve been a fan of this series since it was first in Arcades. I always used Anakaris but was better with Demitri. None of my mates gave this series any love but I was obsessed.
What a fantastic tutorial you've put together. I've just bought the switch version of the collection and I'm really impressed with darkstalkers as a series.
Love the retro games love 🙌🏻 ... thanks for the great content 👍🏻🤝🏻
Good lord.
Is THIS where alotta modern games get they shit from? This game does EVERYTHING.
For the most part, everything that street fighter didn't invent, darkstalkers invented.
Thanks for the hard work man!
any chance to 'choose your main' video style?
I know they are very time consuming, but they are simply amazing, they help a lot to know what to expect when facing any character
Hopefully the choose a main video will be live tomorrow!
that push block explanation was weird. never seen that in any game. this game is very unique
its before the rules of fighting games were solidified basically
Love darkstalkers. Morrigan is a really cool MC
Correction for push block success chances:
3 Buttons: 25% chance
4 Buttons : 67.5% chance
5 Buttons: 90.6% chance
6 Buttons: 100% chance
This is because: the third button has a 25% chance to trigger, the fourth button has a 50% chance to trigger, etc.
Thanks for the kind words, im trying my best!
So its kind of like the max mode in the KOF series.
thanks a bunch for this ^_^
That fact your doing makes me happy because I never got to play the game before and now with these guides I will be fully prepared for the game and get my butt wiped. And we use butt cause on this channel we family friendly here lol
Looking forward to a talbain or bishamon guide
How have I never heared of this. It looks so cool and is so unique.
Will you do content for DNF Duel, roofle? I did not play any of the betas, since I only have a PC
Yep! I will try my best to give the game a decent amount of coverage
@@rooflemonger Awesome! ❤
Awesome guide and Darkstalkers is my favorite series!
felicia: here comes mini me
MAN I CAN'T WAIT!!!
Any chance you’ll do character guides?
CRT Filter pretty sexy
Definitely saving this for three days from now. >:)
Thanks so much for the guide!
Never heard of it before today. Just found it adventuring through some MAME roms on retroarch and instantly fell in love with it. Not sure what versions to play, but I'm going to try out Darkstalkers 3 on PlayStation. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open to them!
No overpowered characters? No infinites? How can I play this!?
I like the Yeti character
Actually some of the dark force are similar to others example Q-Bee's and Jedah's dark force gives them flight, or Hsien-Ko's and Rikuo's which just gives them super armor
Vampire Savior was my first darkstalkers game. There was this movie theater my family and I would often go to and while they were grabbing food at concessions, I'd ask for some quarters to use at the mini arcade they had and that's basically how I discovered John Talbain
Hi Rooflemonger,
I love this game, bought it back in 1998 when it came out here in the UK. Ever since I have always had a soft heart for it. Even though I am very familiar with Vampire saviour I learned some things by watching this video. This is an exemplary beginners guide.
This game looks so cool! I can't wait to get it, plus I can actually try SF2 T. Hawk for the first time, so I am super happy!
I had no interest in the game but enjoy your videos. After watching I can’t wait to try this game!
As a Morrigan main, her moveset makes me want to cry. They really need to reboot this game and give it the VS series treatment.
Just got this for my Saturn collection. I simply love to play my 2D fighting games on good olds Segas wondermachine.
Anybody know why you can't pre order or even purchase the digital copy on the Playstation store 🤔? Even when you go to the official website to pre order digital for playstation is grayed out.
Hey. Standart at this collection are the Pad Buttons LB and LT on Xbox for Special moves. Is this online activated to? I dont Like this
I am thinking capcom doesn't want internal competition with SF. Dark Stalker would make so much bank as a MA anime based fighter
No crossplay unfortunately. The crossplay future for fighting games is simply just not here yet.
I can't fucking do Akuma style super moves at all. Like whatsoever. It's frustrating.
I don't know what "the discord" is. I do not use discord
@@rooflemonger discord.gg/5fwSewN33p Here! :)
Seems like this was a proto-Guilty Gear. Did Daisuke ever talk about how much influence Darkstalkers had on GG?
