Getting ready to do this on my 04 X5 and this is one of the most complete how-to videos I've seen in a long time. Thanks for taking the time to make this!

Very nicely explained video. I own a 2005 BMW X5 and it out of nowhere started overheating. I put water in it but it still gets hot. So I bought both the water pump and thermostat on eBay. After seeing your video I will buy new belts and maybe pulley tensioners as well since they are a part of the same job. I bought it almost a year ago and I guess it's time to do a complete cooling system repair and clean up the system. I love this SUV rides so smooth and very quiet for an old SUV. It has almost 160.000.00 miles on it and it's time to replace a lot of minor stuff. I think I will let the shop fix it as I don't have the patience to do the job myself anymore. But it's looking pretty easy other than the fan clutch..

Sweet!! Thank you for the very useful video. My sons 2002 X5 had a belt break and it must have broke the waterpump because all of the coolant drained out, also the fan blades are busted. I actually removed the whole radiator after alot of contorting and cursing. didn't know where the water pump was until i found this video. look forward to putting it back together.

This video was helpful in me understanding what socket to use to remove tension from the tensioner pully. I was trying T50 based on other videos and it was not working. Now I will try 8MM socket. I have 2006 BMW X5 3.0 that has a bad alternator.

Oh my gosh thank you so much. Looking at all the X5 thermostat videos. I can’t believe how many worthless videos there on the subject. It’s the craziest thing the title will say how to remove the thermostat and then they just show it removed. Is this an ongoing joke that I am unaware of please tell me and thank you. I wanted to know the size of the bolts, and whether I needed to take the bracket off Thankyou.!

Very helpful. I have an x5 3.0 2003. Recently my drive belt popped only after 8mnths of replacing it as the mechanic failed to replace the pulleys which drive the belt. when the belt popped it belt broke the water pump and pulley, oil housing unit, idler pulley, steering pump pulley, fan and fan clutch and the mechanical tensioner. Annoyed to say the least.

I've been in the trade for about 6 years now. I'm just finishing up my level 3 apprenticeship so I'd be able to write my license here in Canada. I'm disappointed and frustrated to say that I no longer have the desire to work in this field even though I initially had passion to learn and do something exciting. Unfortunately this trade is not as rewarding as I'd expected it to be. I've done many repairs on all makes and models including this vehicle and just watching your videos gives me depression as to when I used to work on cars. This is the only real skill I have and invested thousands of dollars on tools and a box but no longer want to pursue it even though I've climbed high up on this mountain. Any advice for a hopeless young man like me?

    • @HowtoAutomotive

istishhadi Hello. I too have been frustrated with working in the automotive Field at times. For me finding the right area to work at and the model of cars to work with made things better. Like you the only thing I know is automotive work, so I began teaching what I know through my website and UA-cam channel and has renewed my enthusiasms and passion for working on cars. And it also has substantially made my financial situation a lot better. One thing is also help me out is interacting with the customers and getting to know them instead of just their cars has made a difference also.

Hi Perla. I would recommend the pump most likely that was the cause. But you can take it and shake it and spend it by hand. If the Bearing sounds scratchy or has play replace the pump. Also check all the other police that may cause the belt come off. Sometimes the belt tensioner goes bad and makes the belt jump. Hope this helps
