I personally run a multi-radio setup: HAM, GMRS & business itinerant radios for my personal communications. Business itinerant frequencies give you many options that both Ham & GMRS radios simply can't offer. For example: I run P25 digital & encryption @ 110 watts VHF; so my personal communications are private and I run more than twice the power of GMRS. 🤘
I have been a amateur operator for over 35 years. I run multi radios depending on who I am wheeling/overlanding with. HAM is always a good backup. CB is ok but very limited. We mostly use GMRS. Cheap and everyone can get a license. Great topic
The Garmin In-Reach is a great emergency SHTF device. 👍 If you're wanting to take your emergency SHTF communications to the next level check out PLB's! No Subscription Required and if you do get into a true SHTF emergency, then the coast guard or the military will send a helicopter to rescue you. ✌
As you get in HAM please get sure to learn about the "wilderness protocol" for emergency situations, as well as "APRS". So much use for APRS in overlanding with the right radio (Yeasu FTM-300DR, Kenwood...), including: sending SMS over radio, tracking your expedition rigs GPS positioning & their status LIVE (all free), you will likely want to make a couple of videos on it (just an idea ;-) ). Enjoy Ham radio overlanding in the US and thanks for your videos. Great content.
Great video, short, informative and to the point! My boys just found your channel the other day and have been enjoying watching your videos. Ive been a HAM operator for 5 years and just applied for my GMRS license today. 73 W3VBD
I run Ham (both hand held and a mobile rig), GMRS and CB to cover all the bases depending on who in running with. Never leave home with a Garmin. Haven't bought a weboost yet, but considering it. Great video
I have been a licensed ham since October of 2021, so I'm still pretty inexperienced. However, I've discovered that it's pretty valuable to check with local ham clubs before your trip to get local repeater frequencies and offsets. I know that all throughout Utah, we have literally hundreds of VHF and UHF repeaters that provide almost seamless coverage of the state. For Utah, there is also the Utah VHF society which provides not only repeater details, but coverage maps. If you find yourself in a pickle, call out on a ham radio and somebody will probably answer.
Not very popular with the hard-core ham people, but in my rig i run a TYT 7900 mobile radio in my truck, and I have a Baofeng UV-5R as my handheld. They are both dual band radios, so I get 2m and 70cm bands. Great thing about both of those radios is I can program all the ham repeaters and GMRS channels. So in one truck and one handheld I have 2 radios in 1. I do have a ham license, Iv had it for 3 years or so. All the guys in my group all run very similar radios if not the same. Great video, awesome info!
That's how some of my crew run! They use the Baofeng with GMRS channels. I just didn't want to have to program it. But I'm gonna pick up a baofeng for HAM at some point in the next couple months. They're very affordable anyway
@Baptism Overland programming is easy once you set up the Chirp program. It takes me 5-10 mins to program a radio. Yeah, they are so cheap, and the bang for the buck makes it an easy decision, in my opinion. The bad part about the baofengs and tyt radios is that they are incredibly hard to program without Chirp. Maybe I'll make a video on programming them.
Hi Asya, I'm about to do a big camping trip for 3 weeks I've gotten some great ideas from you.. one being the pelican case charge box, and I'm about to build one. How is yours going, is it working well, have you done more to it or any issues or things you would have changed ??
But I would like to see is AGM RS app for Android and iOS again AGM RS app for Android. As well as iPhone devices iOS devices and. Unfortunately I don't see any. I'm wondering why that is but an African actually talk just as if you had the actual radio in your hand but instead of having actual radio new hand only needs a self phone. And it works through your regular data connection. And not in that but the Apple also worked with the radio with a walkie-talkie as well. So the walking talk you have on your belt. It would also work with that. And I would like to see AGM RS thing like that. You know I know it's available for hand radios ham radios it's available. But it's another male bowl for GMRS having seen it not always means. Voice communications texting yes I've seen it. Protects messages but I haven't seen it for voice communications yet. That I would like to see. For the GMRS radio spectrum. An app for Android and iOS. And also for your desktop laptop and whatever else. They'll actually work with the regular GMRS walkie-talkies. And that? Each after. A link? Something. And put some wires? In. With? Zillow and I become like that no I want to. Actual walkie-talkie that is GMRS for the work with an app on your phone computer or whatever it is. And again it's works specifically with GMRS radio's that's something I wanna see.
Yep. Still good to have though. There are some moments (like when hurricane Sally hit us) where the grid went down but it wasn't considered a National emergency.

This WeBoost has been awesome so far. I need my HAM. CB could be good but I really don't know anyone using it.

You don’t need a license for emergencies.
