Born in 1903, in an affluent and cultured family, Rai Chand Boral's father Lal Chand Boral was an accomplished Pakhawaj player and a classical singer. Rai Chand Boral was the youngest child, who took a keen interest in the soirees held at the mansion of the Borals. Rai Chand Boral Learned the intricacies of Music from mentors like - Ustad Mushtaq Husain Khan, renowned classical singer of Rampur Gharana; Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan, the noted Sarod player from Gwalior; and Masit Khan, the tabla wizard also from Rampur. in 1927, in his twenties, Rai Chand Boral was approached by The Indian Broadcasting Company, to join the Calcutta station, second after Bombay station, as its head of music department. This was the time when cinema was also gaining popularity. BN Sircar, an England-returned civil engineer, too, was fascinated by cinema. He approached Rai Chand Boral to compose for the two silent films, 'Chasher Meye' and 'Chor Kanta', produced by him. Rai Chand Boral, conducted live orchestra from a pit dug in front of the screen and rose to fame as a musical wizard. In February 10, 1931, BN Sircar, started his own company, New Theatres and Rai Chand Boral was the first choice to head its music department. New Theaters had the best available talented directors, cameramen, sound recordists, artistes KL Saigal, Pahari Sanyal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nemo, Uma Shashi, Kanan Devi, Jamuna, Kamlesh Kumari, Chandra Prabha Devi and Bharati Devi; music directors Rai Chand Boral, Pankaj Mullick and Timir Baran, on the staff. Rai Chand Boral got a major break in 1932 with three films of KL Saigal for New Theatres. Saigal recorded his first song under the baton of Rai Chand. Rai Chand Boral proved his magic and stormed the box office with Saigal's bhajans, which became the favorite of every household Nationwide. Rai Chand's compositions had a fresh aroma and Saigal's songs created a rage. he could play piano and tabla deftly.
Rai Chand Boral was bestowed with the National Film Award. Bengal Film Critics Award and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He has conferred the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1979 for his enormous contribution to film. "
