    Also worth noting how the dodgers blue and giants orange made its way to the teams colors and uniform signage. Blue and orange is also the colors of New York for the icing on the cake.

    Even though a long time Cardinals fan, I most enjoyed seeing their early history remembering when they first were an expansion team in 1962. So interesting how they wee supported by old time Giants and Dodgers fans getting better attendance than very good Yankee teams 1962-1964. In 1964, the Mets were playing spoliers on a great run by the Cards but the Mets came to St. Louis for a final series of the year. Al Jackson beat Bob Gibson 1-0 on a Friday night and then the Mets crushed the Cards that Saturday. Even the final Sunday game was in balnace for a while and it took Bob Gibson as usual piching on little rest coming in as a relief pitcher to save the season and win the pennant. The Reds also lost that day needed to win the pennant. It was the year of the collapse of the Phillies. The Mets were just so hot in 1969 but their pitching of Seaver, Koosman, and that Gentry/Ryan combination mentioned was very tough on the Orioles.

    Even though the 1935 Boston Braves were not, in some sense, worse than the 1962 Mets because they were "only" 77 games below .500 (38-115) compared to 80 (40-120), the Bees winning percentage was .248 (compared to .250).
    Ironically, Babe Ruth, in his last season, played with the 1935 Braves until June, when he retired

    Grant did not have an ownership share in the Mets. He was Paysons' '(stock) coupon clipper' and her proxy when she had Giants shares, he had no stake of his own then either. Was a shame that he ended up with so much clout in the franchise.

  • @edwardcricchio6106
    @edwardcricchio6106 2 роки тому

    Worse thing to happen to the franchise wasn't the Seaver trade, it was winning the NL pennant in 1973. It gave the impression to people running the organization, M. Donald Grant, that they could win every year with that team. The players knew that was a once in a lifetime run, and wanted improvements made to the team. Grant refused to believe it and when free agency came along a few seasons later, Grant ignored it.

      Actually, that was at Shea. There was a similar brawl that broke out in the mid 80's when Ray Knight and Eric Davis got into a nasty fight that triggered both benches to be cleared. The Mets were shorthanded, so Jesse Orosco, the pitcher, had to play right field.

    • @georgeanthony7282

      Nope. I saw the game on tv in 1973. Rose was lucky to get out of Shea Stadium alive... after having assaulted Bud Harrelson on a play at 2nd base just minutes later. Rose was pelted with debris (including a liquor bottle). A few of the Mets went out to the outfield and pleaded with the fans to stop or the game would be forfeited.
