Lotto 6/49 is a national lottery game in Canada. As the name implies, six numbers are drawn from a set of 49. If a ticket matches all six numbers, the jackpot prize of at least $5,000,000 is won. A bonus number is also drawn, and if a player's ticket matches five numbers and the bonus number, the player wins the "second prize" which is usually between $100,000 and $500,000.

The number of ways of picking r ⁆items from a set of n⁆ items is calculated using the equation above. For example, let's say you have 5 different numbers, {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}. If you want to randomly pick 2 items from the 5 (without taking into account order), there are 10 possible combinations:
{1, 2}, {1, 3}, {1, 4}, {1, 5}, {2, 3}, {2, 4}, {2, 5}, {3, 4}, {3, 5}, {4, 5}
To calculate the probability:
Probability of winning the lottery=(Number of winning lottery numbers)/(Total number of distinct combinations)

I came here for the odds not a math lesson.
You can lower the odds by fixing number if you match the fixed numbers. I like to fix two or three numbers when I play the lottery.
There are lottery programs that claim to analyse number patterns using past results using a history file to predict future results. Im not sure if any of these programs work. Or they are just random number generators. These programs are normally quite expensive.
It would be nice if they chose a combination from sold tickets. A lottery where nobody wins is a fraud in my opinion.

Very good explanation. The combination law applies when people buy using quick pick (read as randomly pick number) from the lotto machine.. But if people pick from a list of numbers already processed, they will definitely get better chance to win, but however if the aim is the biggest jackpot, still need a huge luck for that. I am predicting 649, Ontario49, and Western 649, and put the list on youtube channel, for alternative if people does not like the quick pick option. The statistics shows the probability to win the very minimum prize is better than the randomly quick pick.

I used to play the 649 and won 4 times with 5 numbers, anywhere between $1500 and $2200, then they tripled the cost so now I can’t afford to buy as many tickets as when it was a $1 per line. I used to play the same numbers. About 10 lines per week, of course then it was just once per week now it’s twice a week so it might as well be $6 per line....lol. I don’t buy them anymore.

On the lottery what are the odds when you buy tickets that let you pick from buying 7 numbers 8 numbers or 9 numbers still only 49 numbers in the draw would it increase your odds you still only need the six numbers to win top price but get to pick up to 9 numbers cost a little more
In a game where more numbers are needed to win, your odds of winning the jackpot are reduced. Usually games that require >6 numbers, prizes become more numerous though, so you're more likely to win. Hope I understood your question!

For example a 5-Combo gives you 44 6-number combinations. The cost is 44 times the cost of 1 play. A 7-Combo gives you 7 6-number combinations. The cost is 7 times the cost of 1 play. An 8-Combo gives you 28 6-number combinations. The cost is 28 times the cost of 1 play. A 9-Combo gives you 84 6-number combinations. The cost is 84 times the cost of 1 play. You get what you pay for. It's the cycling through of all the 6-number combinations that's handled for you. One play/combination gives you a 1/13,983,816 chance. To directly answer your question: a 7-Combo has a top prize odds of 1,997,688 to 1. An 8-Combo has a top prize odds of 499,422 to 1. A 9-Combo has a top prize odds of 166,474 to 1.
Well.. what about if someone bought all combinations for $13 million dollars assuming each cost $1 this will guarantee winning the jackpot of $50 million.. a whopping $37 million profit..
Except tickets cost 3 to 5 dollars, and you risk having chose the same numbers as a second or third person, so the prize would have to be split
Lottery never works like that , jackpot will be always lesser than what you pay in total. So cost will not be $1 but it will be more for $50 million jackpot

Therefore, there's no possible advice I can give other than don't select 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, because if that combination is selected, chances are you'll be splitting it with many others that pick those numbers out of default.
