You'd have to completely replace the screen since this is silver foil backed for reflectivity. It's completely opaque. They tried frontlights but apparently it looked rubbish
If it were a scrollwheel on the side instead of a crank, then your right hand can still access the a/b buttons. Imagine moving a character with the dpad, using the scrollwheel to control the direction of a crosshair, and a/b buttons to jump and shoot. Maybe you can still twirl the crank with one finger (like twirling your hair). Maybe it's time to port all those old black and white mac games like Dark Castle.

The marketing is slick and the handheld definitely looks very cute, but it strikes me as one of those gimmick devices that you go "oooooh, aaaaahhh" at until the novelty wears off shortly after. Why a monochrome display? Why no backlight? Why no deeper look at some of the games? Are there any games on this device that offer the kind of depth which will keep you engaged for more than a few minutes at a time?
Well, you can make your own games with Playdate Pulp and soon they'll have a system to play games made by other players. About the monochrome and not backlighted display, I'm sure things will work out, we are too used to 4k 60fps color monitors who make lights, and the Playdate is remnant of a simpler time, and I'm okay with that. I would not worry too much because the devs care a lot about the player base and are very kind

I have this modern Gameboy vibes. I think Panic is doing some sort of subscription model so that you can get new games delivered to you in future seasons. That would be cool. Hopefully the crank can be an added bonus instead of a tacked on gimmicks when dev creates game for it
At the moment right now there only seems to be the season one free subscription model that comes with the system. It would be interesting to see what they have planned. But they also let you side load playdate made games onto the console on whatever site the developer posts it on (most likely itch.io).
This little machine is extremely badass. I could carry it with me and use it anywhere. As much as I love the Switch, I miss when handheld consoles were actually small enough to carry discreetly in a pocket.

looks neat, but it is a shame about the price. at about $280 here in canada for a novelty device such as this is pushing it (you can get an analogue pocket for $340 by comparison which is FAR more capable hardware). part of the appeal should have been a low price to entry to entice a spontaneous purchase of the playdate. at half the price i would be on board....at any rate, hope this thing does well and people enjoy it. the gaming industry is too predicable these days and this is a breath of fresh air.

So an argument that it is “roughly on par with your iPhone” is definitely false. Samsung Galaxy’s and others are even in the high 500’s. It is fair to say the Playdate does not have “extremely high resolution“. It was kind of a silly thing for them to say, but if you are comparing it to a Gameboy at 82.79 PPI than sure, it is much better than that. I just thought it was funny is all.
