🟨 This video is about a little box called Playdate. Learn all about our unique handheld. Follow us on Twitter: / playdate • Or, learn more at: play.date/
The “Play date” sound at the intro and end puts a huge smile on my face. I feel like a kid again, turning on my PlayStation one and hearing that iconic sting.
I hope they eventually make some website for people to share their creations so other people can download them to play And also maybe an SD card slot or something to help expand the space for more games to be downloaded into it
You'd have to completely replace the screen since this is silver foil backed for reflectivity. It's completely opaque. They tried frontlights but apparently it looked rubbish
If it were a scrollwheel on the side instead of a crank, then your right hand can still access the a/b buttons. Imagine moving a character with the dpad, using the scrollwheel to control the direction of a crosshair, and a/b buttons to jump and shoot. Maybe you can still twirl the crank with one finger (like twirling your hair). Maybe it's time to port all those old black and white mac games like Dark Castle.
I have this modern Gameboy vibes. I think Panic is doing some sort of subscription model so that you can get new games delivered to you in future seasons. That would be cool. Hopefully the crank can be an added bonus instead of a tacked on gimmicks when dev creates game for it
At the moment right now there only seems to be the season one free subscription model that comes with the system. It would be interesting to see what they have planned. But they also let you side load playdate made games onto the console on whatever site the developer posts it on (most likely itch.io).
Everyone's season starts when they first power on their device. So you can start yours on launch and I can start mine a week later and we'll have the same experience
@@kintrix007 yup. Originally Panic wanted all playdate owners to have the system at the same time but interest grew so they had to change their model slightly.
It's kinda expensive for me, but if I was an adult with a good job, this would be a really neat fun device! If they get the price to be very cheap, this device would be a hit with children whose parents don't want to buy an expensive console.
@@archerboy7922 I mean if you made it enticing, a bit of background info on the rock, a nicely designed shop, maybe, its not for me but you never know, we'll buy anything, mate
Well, one, it's not mass produced. Two it comes with 24 games, that will be presumeably pretty good, as there are some great developers working on it. And three, you can make games with it, they also have a code-free engine so that anyone can do it. This means, there are gonna be more other indie games as well. :P
I dunno man.. The marketing is slick and the handheld definitely looks very cute, but it strikes me as one of those gimmick devices that you go "oooooh, aaaaahhh" at until the novelty wears off shortly after. Why a monochrome display? Why no backlight? Why no deeper look at some of the games? Are there any games on this device that offer the kind of depth which will keep you engaged for more than a few minutes at a time?
Well, you can make your own games with Playdate Pulp and soon they'll have a system to play games made by other players. About the monochrome and not backlighted display, I'm sure things will work out, we are too used to 4k 60fps color monitors who make lights, and the Playdate is remnant of a simpler time, and I'm okay with that. I would not worry too much because the devs care a lot about the player base and are very kind
@@somestalkerwithamoustache8789 there's not only Playdate Pulp, there's also the official SDK that supports Lua (which is really easy to use) and C, that will let you make different genres of games instead of narrative-driven games only as Pulp
If it's succesfull I think Bethesda will port Skyrim to it
Someone from Bethesda already wrote down your idea.
REEEEEEEEEEE
genius
And Rockstar will port gta 5 on it
Someone will run Doom on it.
This sounds like a bunch of characters from Adventure Time made a console.
I need a BMO cover or skin for my Playdate!!!

Portland man, Portland
The “Play date” sound at the intro and end puts a huge smile on my face. I feel like a kid again, turning on my PlayStation one and hearing that iconic sting.
It has so much personality, something I miss so much, that consoles nowadays all lack.
I hope they eventually make some website for people to share their creations so other people can download them to play
And also maybe an SD card slot or something to help expand the space for more games to be downloaded into it
That absolute dad-quality Bob's Burgers-esq "oh my god" at the end is perfect.
LYNN!
This promo is so well exectuted. I really hope this product sticks the landing because it really looks unique and fun.
Ryan C. with Sotol Media always kills it!
I know such an amazingly well edited and designed video!
meh, it costs 179, way too much for a console who's main selling point is nostalgia

As long as what you want does not have higher requirements than Doom

I’ve really needed something to look forward to. Thank you for this! I’m so excited
Hope yah have fun!
I need someone to port VibRibbon to this.
when the thing gets discontinued, we need a modding community to keep the weekly game thing alive lol
This looks super cool. It gives you a new videogame experience
Collaborating with teenage engineering was the best thing that could ever happen to this project. I can‘t wait!
They must have been high on crank when they designed this.
Get it? Crank? Because of the crank on the side, but also meth? LOL!

This Ad was really well done.. you know.. Different..
I’ve seen that a lot of people have been complaining about the play date not having a backlight. Obviously those people did not watch this commercial.
Imagine playing Inside or Limbo on this thing!
Limbo, yes. Inside not so much. A lot of the game's atmosphere would be lost.
