Same here. Got mine in about 1995 and was the only one of my friends with a Marshall. Everyone thought it was the greatest amp ever because all we had ever heard were Peavey and cheaper fenders. A lot of my style then developed around the Marshall sound, and by 1999 I upgraded to the TSL 100 all tube stack.
These valvestates were awesome and gave you serious Marshall feel and power without breaking the bank.
I'd really like to get the VSR 265 model with the twin speakers and built in chorus.

Many years , many Marshalls I've had . So glad I have this 90's beloved one again now . I can say that this is one of the best Marshalls I've ever had ..... why ? Because today in 2022 , this is still the perfect amp to own . Small , powerful and full of that up front classic Marshall crushed glass tone , and a super clean channel bonus ! Top of the heap tone and power for either with a band or with its master volume , awesome for studio work . I can take it anywhere and get awesome tone , mic it in the studio , try diff spkrs with it ,etc . This thing works A-1 and never lacks in any respect ..... even after all these years ! Great vid !

Got my Marshall VS265 back today - having been back to the factory for a new valve and a couple of pots. Never let me down since the day I bought it in 1997. Solid (and very loud...).
BTW - if you compare the service (£70 all in) to a local amp repair, and throw in a pre-arrange factory tour, museum, studio (with Steve, 35 yrs service) and you can't grumble!!!! Off to the studio for a plugin with my Les Paul....

Interesting video. I've got a 1993 Valvestate 8040 (yes it does have an ECC83) in amongst my amps and its very good as long as you clean up the scratchy pots every so often. You mentioned this being Marshalls first foray into hybrid amps but I believe there's an earlier contender for that title. Back when I was a kid starting to play guitar, I had a second hand 5 watt Marshall Mercury 1x12 combo (model 2060) that had a solid state pre amp and EL84 power amp section. It was only made by Marshall between 1972 & 1973 and originally for sale via mail order catalogues. Pity they didn't opt to stick with 1x12's in their more recent low watt amps !

Great video, thanks for sharing! I bought one when they first came out. My ears told me that I preferred the 8040, but my brain said I wanted the Clean/Crunch switch on the Clean channel and that 80 watts was better than 40 watts.
Mine came with an Eminence speaker rather than a Celestion. I wrote to Marshall asking them why and received a call from Ritchie Fliegler himself (which I thought was pretty cool). He said that they found the Eminence to sound better than any available higher power Celestions at the time.
I never really bonded with the amp and sold it years later. Haven't really missed it and have always considered buying an 8040. Probably won't know as they're getting up there in age (as am I) and I have a couple other solid-state amps that I'm enjoying.
I believe I read that this was Jim Marshall's favorite amp, simply because they sold so many of them.
I think the first available Valvestate amps were the mini-stack, perhaps a 20 watt combo, the 8040, the 8080 and the 8100 head which was paired with the (delightful) 8412 4x12s. I may have considered the stack, but I believe the 8100 was about the same cost as an 8080 combo so even a half stack would have been a lot more expensive.

2 of these are a great option for using as poweramps for ampmodellers/multiefx via the efx returns/line in. So handy to have front access ;-) I've sold a lot of them too, love the price to sound quality ratio. I had a lot of Metal/Thrash customers and they were not hard to sell, to those who couldn't afford the 800s, and some actually preferred the Valvestates i.e. Lasse from Illdisposed.

This is still my main amp even though a JVM410C is standing right next to it. I will renew the pots soon to freshen things up. I love the contour knob. It is so easy to change to different tones with just this one and on top the tone controls work pretty good. Surely ... the JVM shreds the whole house into pieces with power and killer sounds if it wants to, but the 8080 is still my go to amp nonetheless.

Hi Matthew, I was drawn to this video and though I'd ask you some questions since you mentioned you serviced this amplifier.
I recently plugged a Marshall Valvestate 8040v (made for American market) into 240v UK socket. It is now damaged, don’t ask! … I replaced the fuse and the normal channel made a terrible buzzing noise and the boost channel works but has bad tone and reduced volume.
I started at the tube socket (12AX7) to take some readings. Pin 1 (Plate) 248v, Pin2 (Grid) 244v, Pin4/5 (Filament) 18v??, Pin 6 (Plate) 0v, Pin 7 (Grid) 0v. I also have 3.5v AC on plates and grids. D1 and D2 are open. Only one half of the socket is receiving power? Planning to replace the diodes and Zener Diodes. I’d like to get the power supply operating first. I wanted to ask if you know the voltages to expect from the power transformer and auto transformer? I understand the Dagnell T593 is also used in the 8080v model.
I hope oyu can help, and thank you for your time.

You can download a service manual of you look the heater wires appear high if to measure the voltage of the pin to ground but the have looped the heaters abs between then I think is about 12v the HT sounds about right. I would look at all of those. Big fat resistors by the transformer And valve and check there all in spec as I have replaced a few in a valve state head I'm currently trying to fix. But sounds like the auto transformer for the valve is ok. Some of those op amps blow for a pastime as they are integral to the overdrive

@@MatthewNorthMusic Hi Matthew, thank you for this insight. I'll check the resistors, I know the 2 x 68 ohm 3W were running hot so I swapped them out for 5W. I'll check the others too. I have downloaded a schematic, but not seen a service manual. I'll check it out tomorrow. Thank you for your reply.

Fantastic buy. In 10 years you may need to do the pots again but I bet you probably won't need to do much else

I haven't seen one since the early 90s. So Can't really comment. Was a good amp as I recall.

I have an 8240 and it kicks ass. Reverb and chorus almost as good as my 79 JC120. Stereo effects loop return. Weighs nothing. Great amp provided you can fix any noisy pots and being sold for peanuts these days.

The 8240 is far more than a Jazz Chorus

You could get some pretty good Dime tones outta that thing, if you knew how to play. Cheers!
