- there is a bit of controversy around making arrows from wooden dowels so today I thought I'd take some time to clear things up. This subject makes some people unreasonably heated so please, if you want to debate about this, keep it civil.

By the way, type “I bet bards black arrow was made from a dowel” in the comment section if you actually read the description.
If you have anything you would like me to make a video about please let me know in the comment section.
There’s also some talk about a bell or something? I don't know, sounds kinda dumb...

Most of these professional arrow makers will say that you can't use them... because it will hit their pocketbooks.
I've been making arrows from dowels for about 6 months now. I was worried about breakage as I'm using a 50lb recurve. I've always locked for grain and straightness for that reason. Then I give them a heavy flex to ensure they'll survive archers paradox. If the break it cost me $1.40 for oak. Still haven't had one break. Thank you for the video.
I've used 8/9/12mm hardwood dowels from my local store for years for my arrows, have shot both the 9mm and 12mm out of my 85 and 95lb warbows, as you said, you just have to be aware of the grain structure. At the same time, I've seen matched arrows made from hand planed timber break from hitting the target out of the same warbows so as far as I'm concerned, a lot of it comes down to clinical accuracy standards vs "practical" or "military" accuracy standards. Like, if I can hit the butt at 70m with a dowel arrow, then I'm happy, but if I'm using my competition recurve, I'll want to hit the inner rings.
I go to my local hardware store...sift thru the bins..n get my dowels of either ( Doug fir, ash, walnut ,or cedar)...3/8 or 1/2 " ...n 38" long...$.95 each!! Total cost for all of my arrows....$22.95for 24...I also use 3/8 n 1/2" river Reeds for my primitive arrows! A hand picked bundle of 30..$5.96!
They are going to break on impact at times, when you hunt...no matter what you hunt n no matter what bow you use! Been hunting since September 1957....do what's cheap n you can afford...n you will enjoy the hunt/ bow fishing adventure all the more!!

This is a very underrated channel
Just made ten of them gonna hunt some whitetail next year with them . The price for wood arrows are through the roof
Great video with some very good points. Ha see what i did there. And also I bet bards black arrow was made from a dowel
Thank you for this video, it made me smile. I know Richard Head longbows and they are as bowyers not well liked. If you're interested in English longbows then either Bickerstaffe or Heritage are the way to go.
I made arrows from DOWLS bought not one broke look for grain structure there no run offs weight the spine so all are same spine then you good to go. Even home made arrows can break if grain is not strait.
Good controversy, thank you. Can you tell me your opinion about arrow shafts made out of eucalyptus? (I dont understand the sarcasm in english; I speak spanish) Thank you!
I've never worked with that type of wood before so I can't say. From what I can find though it doesn't seem like it would be a very good material. ideal arrow woods are light and strong and it seems that eucalyptus is very dense and brittle.
Surely its the wood type thats important
I've done it, you just have to spend ages in the store sifting through the bins for good dowels.
Well said.....
The next generation of youtubing mics will be the size of a bucket.
I used a cheap dowel wood arrows from hardware on compound bow shoot shoot pretty good than fiberglass
That is not a good idea.
@@TheElvenArcher lol agreeeeddd
Great video also could you do another hunting dinosaurs video
If i'm ever back in Oregon then for sure 😅
I bet bard's black arrow was made from a
Broomhandle.
I'm mean a store would advise against DIYing something they sell. I'm curious, how old are you now?
I'm at a point somewhere between the moments of my birth and death
@@TheElvenArcher That's a good point to be in.
I’m at that point in life as well.
I am happy to be there.
He looks like he was all state in backgammon in high school.
“monkey fist” the dowel
This is a little weird. I'm searching specifically for videos about making shafts from dowels and the first two I watch are that Brit's and yours, in that order.
I hope anyone who sees his also finds yours.
Another point worth mentioning is that even if you order shafts from a reputable source, just shipping can cause them to be no longer suitable.
That guy is selling shafts and his video was intentional misinformation to that end. Period. Thanks for calling him out, but don't be so PC about it. It is obvious he is being disingenuous. I very much doubt that dowel he used was "randomly picked". I don't believe it for a second.
A bit off-topic
He looks like he wet the bed up until his early 20s
Can't deny that, I did just wet your mother's bed last night.
