Silky Oak End Grain Cutting Board

- I've finally got around to doing an end grain cutting board, after all these years! I used some reclaimed northern silky oak and even though a tablesaw would've helped, I managed without it. A chopping board like this is a great gift idea and can be made in so may different way. It's also a project every wood worker should do at some stage.

Thanks for watching
Who else is keen to see the board explode in my thickness planer?
Well it is the practice board right.... ;)
Robin just glue some sacrificial boards on to the ends of your cutting board and then cut those off after you plain it. I’ve done this and it is the best way to prevent end grain blowout.
Fresh blades and VERY light passes with sacrificial boards on the ends and everything will be fine!
@@zfrone1 Thats right - this will work...
I want to see the board explode in your thicknesser while filmed with super slo-mo. I always wondered just how bad it would be for a comparatively lightweight lunchbox thicknesser. So if it doesn't explode the first time, can you try again please 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Its a cutting board it needs holes and cut marks. I just made one from American Black walnut with holes;).
Awesome project Robin. Greetings from the humidity free Southern Highlands of NSW.
Muy bueno el trabajo y el videos 👏👏👏saludos desde argentina 👍👍👍👍
He literally uses everything but a table saw because he doesn’t have one yet he has everything else. 🤦♀️
If only you had a drum sander to use instead
Thought you might of gone into DownUnder Woodworks #summerbuilds21 challenge?, oh well you’re probably busy mate like Pask Makes is & carry on fella!!!
Thanks Dirk. Hadn't seen it until you mentioned it, it would've been perfect for it. Hope you're well
I've planed end-grain. Did a quick video on it too. Just glue a sacrificial piece to the ends and it should hold everything together if you take light passes!
Awesome, good to hear it!
I like it, slight imperfections and all! "I hope you got something out of it"... my brain answered, "Can I have the cutting board?"
Thank you
Why don't you use some resin to fill any holes left. Have a great day, mate. 👍👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘
Thanks Cathy. Resin isn't considered food safe, so technically it's a bad idea to use it on the cutting surface.
It does look good, but I can understand that good isn't good enough when you wanted closer to perfect. I look forward to the thicknesser experiment. Insert board, retreat to safe distance *"FIRE IN THE HOLE"*!
Haha, thanks
I have used the thickness planer with end grain. Glue a sacrificial board the same thickness on the ends to prevent blowout.
Right! I had thought of that but didn't know if it'd work. I'll give that a go, thanks
Beautiful cutting board. I have never worked with silky oak but it looks like some really nice stuff. However I just recently have had the chance to work with some white oak for the first time and I’ve been doing woodworking for a little over 10 years, don’t know why it didn’t happen sooner lol. Why wouldn’t you use your bandsaw to resaw little bits off at a time until you get below the holes rather then putting it through your planer? Or you could figure out roughly how deep the holes are by using a pick or something and resaw to maybe just slightly shallower and see how farther there is to go then take that final bit off.
The bandsaw is a great idea! At least just remove the bill before putting it through the drum sander. I’ll give that a go if the planers a bust
You called it oak. Is it what is called Lacewood in the US? The end grain looked awesome.
Good spot! Lacewood is the other name for it
I think it looks great with the character holes. But also really looking forward to the carnage of it going through your thicknesser 🤗
thanks, fingers crossed!
Very nice board brah! Is that oil a food grade?
Thanks. Yup, it's my go to for cutting boards
I love it, especially with it's freckles. ❤️
I loved how it came out. I would have kept the nail marks as it makes for a good story.
Thanks. I was tempted
Personally, I'm worried about food getting trapped there over time and spoiling
Nicely done Robin! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 .... Looking forward to seeing how it turns out! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🙏🏻
Thanks Fred, you and me both
I was looking forward to another RLM video just yesterday, and here it is (Prefect timing), and what ever happens in PT2 , hey it's all good.
Thanks Mike
Honesty in woodworking makes the craft accessable. Too easy to give up when you see all the perfectly edited videos. Thanks for keeping it real 👍
Thanks Mark, appreciate that
Haha yep I sent an end grain board through my thicknesser, didn’t go well . Have not tried again. I’ll be interested to see how yours goes. Turned out very nice . Great video ;)
Uh oh, now you're making me worried
Nice one Robin! Good luck with the thicknesser 🤞🏼
Thanks
