  • In this video I discuss my thoughts on installing a Dolby Atmos studio. It is a very costly investment into your studio. But one thing I will say is that it will massively pay off. At least 50% of our clients order Dolby Atmos mastering with their stereo mastering. This is additional income for your studio on top of what you are already making for stereo services.

    The painful truth is that only people interested in the music industry are forcing atmos. 99% of the audience doesn't give a shit. This is my personal experience.

      Yeah this is 100% true. I enjoyed atmos because of working in cinema. I would have never moved to atmos in music so quickly had it not been for Apple pushing it. Soon as they started forcing it on the industry, I knew it was an essential aspect I needed to incorporate into my business. I'd have never done it without Apple pushing it. I'm happy to admit that because I'm not silly and I look at everything with business in mind. The issue is now it's being pushed by every big company except Spotify, there's just no going backwards. They 100% have an agender and that agender is to sell more headphones, premium subscription etc etc. Speaker companies are loving it as they are selling 7 times more speakers. 99% of the consumers don't care and are listening to what they are forced to listen to. Hence, why Apple sets Dolby atmos as the default playback. Most consumers won't switch the settings and just listen to what they are delivered.

      It's sad to write this, but I think Apple has done more damage to music than any other influence in the last 20 years. Those music listeners are used to compressed formats. After they made the audience more and more accepting of poor quality, I think it's too late to reverse this. That's why I think that atmos music is a stillborn idea. It can also be debated with a professional eye. Works well with few genres. But not really with the most popular ones

      I strongly disagree, Atmos will be adopted, all it will take is a Superbowl ad/Beyonce/Taylor Swift pushing it etc. and the masses will adopt. Atmos is not a gimmick, it's the future.

      @germanikolaas it's the present and the future. No getting away from that. It's a case of embracing it and coming to terms with the fact it's here to stay.

      @@germanikolaas Exactly as you write. They force it. Because they have to push. There is no professional reason or audience demand in the background. Business only. It is not practical for people to install 7.1.4 systems in their living room. There have been a lot of atmos remasters from old recordings in recent years. Most of them sound completely artificial.

    Yep, fully agree. I have it also for around 5 months and I love it. How loud do you go into the MBT? Did you find some kind of sweet spot?

    Just like stereo, atmos is mix dependent on each song. Both of these formats can end up in good or bad result depending on how they use it.
    Anothing thing for atmos mix is depending on the source used for mixing. Did they use multitrack stems (which is recommended I think) or one way another as long it meets the standards.

      Some songs sound better in atmos than others and this usually dependant on the amount of stems provided. The more stems the more objects you can position around the room.

    Paul, for you and the rest of us, does buying stereo gear make sense If atmos is the future?

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  4 місяці тому +3

      This is something I often ponder. Yet I still keep buying more and more stereo equipment. Stereo will still be as important as atmos for I'd say a good 10 years. Even if atmos took over steaming DJs will still need a stereo master to play in clubs. Stereo is still an important part of atmos as each object is mono or stereo. So you'll still use stereo whilst mixing atmos. The only time stereo will be replaced by atmos completely is if the delivery of the Dolby Atmos ADM plays back a stereo version for stereo playback. The only issue with this is that at present stereo playback of an atmos file is inferior to a stereo master.

    As a musician a dappled in creating music in atmos. But found myself with a terrible end result when collapsing down to stereo.

      Yes, this can be the case. Learning how to work in atmos and achieve perfect playback in stereo comes with experience. Took me a good 2 months of constantly working in Dolby Atmos to understand how to achieve this. It's like working in stereo to achieve perfect playback in mono. This is something you've learned to do over a period of time working in stereo and now just comes naturally.

    Bob Clearmont think atmos wil be dead in few years. And that man have always been mixing surround,and now atmos. Atmos its great, but I don

      We shall see. I can't see it being dead in a few years. You'd be naive to think Apple would invest hundreds of millions into atmos and push it like they are to then kill it off. We will circle back to this comment in 3 years and see where we're at.

      I like Atmos. It sounds cool. But teenagers wear AirPods. AirPods have Spatial Audio at best, not true Atmos. I predict if Apple requires Atmos to be on Apple Music, they will loose Apple Music subscribers. Indie bands can always mix in Spatial Audio/Atmos in Logic with a pair of AirPod Max. Just my prediction.

    • @AudioAnimalsStudio
      @AudioAnimalsStudio  4 місяці тому

      @kennethdaniels true atmos like what we hear in the studio or cinema is something that won't be in 100% of consumers homes. Things will change and a consumer device that is small, compact and affordable will be available. Will also require only one speaker positioned anywhere in the room and sound will be calibrated and projected. This is already being worked on but the tech will be expensive for a good few years. For most consumers outside the home they'll wear airpods which yes is spatial audio. More and more engineers as they explore mixing in Dolby atmos are starting to understand how to achieve superior playback for Dolby atmos binaural playback and apple spatial playback. Only time will tell on all this. I don't think it's something that'll disappear or be dead any time soon.

      @@AudioAnimalsStudio As a counterpoint to this argument... They also just pulled the plug on several billion $ worth of investment in their electric car project. I don't hate atmos, especially for film post its a nessecity (At least 5.1 minimum) for music i'm still not convinced and turn off head tracking and atmos wherever i can. With that said... I think the critical killer feature to support it will be Apple's vision pro... you are gonna need it when those things come down in price because everyone will expect it when listening to music on the vision pro. just my $0.02
